Today’s song is from a “special” film Mujrim Kaun-1966.
I call this a ‘special’ film, because of an interesting reason. The reason is that this is one of those rare films, where most of the actors, Director, music Director, all 3 lyricists, singers, producer, the banner, the screenplay writer, the dialogue writer and even the financer were all “ONE TIME” members. They had no previous experience earlier and after this film, they did not work in any other film.
The director K.K.Reddy was an assistant director in Sarathi Studio at Hyderabad for Telugu films. Music Director Samik Mani was playing instruments with various composers in madras. The film was financed by S.M.Reddy who had earned a lot of money from the Middle East. All Lyricists were writing for this film for the first and the last time. Pal jaykumar, who sang an English song in this film wrote his own song.
The MD Samik mani doubled as a singer with the name K.M.Sami (real name Kanda Sami Mani) and sang a duet with another first time Hindi singer Ashalata kulkarni, who also sang a solo song. Veena George – wife of Pal Jaykumar – also sang a solo song. Only one 78 RPM record was brought out commercially. On one side was a solo song of Ashalata and on the other side was today’s duet song of Ashalata and Sami. After this neither Ashalata nor Sami ever sang in any Hindi film.
This was a Stunt film. Stunt films were less costly and thanks to a bonded audience for stunt films, profits were sure. The actors, singers and other related people were getting a Debut in a Hindi film and hence must have worked on lower emoluments or even Free. Overall the film was not a losing proposition for the financer, in any case. Only the Heroine was a well known actress – Rajashree (south). She had worked in 5 Hindi films-including Shashi Kapoor’s film Pyar Kiye jaa-1966, the other 3 films were dubbed films. The hero was Satyajit, about whom no information was available despite my all out efforts.
The story of the film was…. The story of the film was a run of the mill story.
There is an international gang of gold smugglers, which is disturbing the country’s economy.A special cellis opened to trace and end the ring and Insp.Ramesh is the Chief. He resembles smuggler Ramesh.Taking advantage of this and with the help of his asst. Mary, he reaches a Timber Factory where Dr.Mukherji and Col.Williams run the smuggling under the guise of Timber business.Ramesh falls in love with Sheela,d/o Dr.Mukherjee.Lily,the dancer also falls in his love.
Suddenly,Sheela and the doctor disappear and Ramesh is caught.he is kept in a cell,to be killed soon, but Lily rescues him. With additional force from the police Ramesh exposes Col.Williams as the Gang leader, who has also kept Sheela and the Doctor as hostages and thus the entire gang is busted.
The singer of this duet is Ashalata Kulkarni. She hailed from Hyderabad. During the early 60’s, we used to attend her programmes In 1963, we heard that she sang in a Telugu film. We all went to see the film. We were elated that a Marathi singer from Hyderabad was a film singer now. Later we also heard that she sang in some Hindi film of Bombay and we were happier. Here is a short Bio of Ashalata kulkarni, adapted from and translated freely from an article published in the popular Marathi newspaper of Bombay ” Loksatta” dated 12-12-2011.
The date was 5-5-1954 and the place was V.V.H.S. Grounds, Hyderabad. A musical programme was going on. After a few songs, a smart girl of about 10 years came on the stage and started singing a song from the film ‘Anarkali’…” yeh zindagi usi ki hai”. From the first line itself the audience was thrilled and after the song ended, the whole audience stood up clapping and shouting ” Once More”. The girl’s name – Ashalata Kulkarni.
Born in a small place Vaijapur, in Aurangabad district of Hyderabad state, Ashalata and her family shifted to hyderabad. She began learning music and very soon she was a ‘ much in demand’ singer for private and Ganesh mela functions. While completing her graduation from the Women’s college in Hyderabad, she also obtained “Sangeet Praveen” in Music, which is equivalent to a Doctorate in Music. She used to be called to sing before the National leaders during their visits, like Nehru, Rajendra prasad, Radhakrishnan, Indira gandhi, Y.B.Chavan etc.
Once the S.B.I.Club arranged her programme in a Hyderabad posh hotel. Telugu film director and producer Dr. Madhusudan was staying there. When he heard her singing, he was so impressed that he offered her 2 songs in the film ‘ Chaduvukunna Ammayilu’ (Studying young girls), in Telugu. Being from Hyderabad, Ashalata was proficient in Telugu. In her career she sang 12 songs in Telugu films and 2 songs in a Hindi film ” Mujrim kaun’-1966.
After a 15 day Musical programme in Hyderabad Rajendra Prasad ji honoured her by declaring her as ” Andhralata ”. She was later included in the musical delegation to Afghanistan in 1962 along with Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Vilayat Khan, Samta Prasad, Indrani Rehman and others. For her songs, the King of Afghanistan honoured her.
Ashalata got married to Vasant Karalgikar and settled in Aurangabad in 1967. She was employed by L.I.C. During 1980-85 she undertook an All India tour, singing at several cities a variety of songs including Ghazals, in which she was an expert. She also sang on Doordarshan and A.I.R. She was awarded “Surashree” and ” Surmani” titles by A.I.R.
After retirement she ran a Musical Academy in Aurangabad. She wrote her autobiography in Marathi. Her daughter Kavita is a noted singer and son Nikhil is an acclaimed Tabla Player.
Now let us listen to the duet from the film Mujrim kaun-1966.
