Today’s song is from a different type of film….King Kong-1962.

King Kong is actually a fictional Giant Monster resembling a Gorilla. It was created by Merian Cooper. No wonder film wallahs all over the world, especially Hollywood and then Bollywood, were attracted towards King Kong and many films were made on him. The first film King Kong was made in 1933 in Hollywood and released on 7-4-1933. The latest picture King Kong is made in Hollywood in 2022, i.e. last year. It proves that the King Kong magic is still alive !

In India, the first King Kong film was made in 1962 and the second film came in 1986. Today’s film King Kong-1962 has 3 specialities….

1. It was the First film titled King Kong in India.
2. This was Dara Singh’s First film as a Hero and
3. King Kong, the real Hungarian world famous wrestler – whose real name was Emile Czaja (pronounced Za Za) had also acted in this film, as King Kong.

” There is a child in every adult ” said Carl Jung. How true it is, is found from our own thoughts and behaviour. Given a choice, time and freedom, everyone is ready to do things he did as a child. During childhood, one has respect for unusual strength, magic, superpowers and ability to do impossible things. That is why stories of Hanuman and Bheem are popular.
Stunt and action films in olden times and films with a lot of SFX in modern times became popular. We know that we can not do these things, so people see whoever does these. From this thought alone, when stunt and action films started waning, the game of wrestling became popular. Lakhs of people watched the wrestling bouts between Indian and foreign wrestlers.

Would the film industry miss this change in social thinking ? NEVER ! From the early 60’s, Musclemen and wrestlers became Heroes in Hindi films, where the might of Physical strength was the answer to establish social equality and the rule of law. This gave way to wrestlers, Mr. Indias and Bodybuilders like Dara Singh, Randhava, Azad and others to be the central characters of films and this new genre became popular.

Most in demand was of course Dara Singh. The 60’s opened up a new Genre of Films. Films in which muscular He-men ‘acted’. Really speaking, their dialogues were delivered silently by their solid bodies and the fighting they did on the screens. Here were the Heroes who would kill dangerous Jungle animals barehanded, break Iron chains, fight with 10 people at a time, ride horses, swim expertly and overall display their physical might !
The beginning was done in 1958 with ‘Zimbo’, featuring Azad-a Parsee Bodybuilder. That way Dara Singh had entered the films in 1952 with ‘Sangdil’ and he had a wrestling match with Om prakash in ‘Pehli Jhalak’-1954. His first film as a hero -King Kong came in 1962, when he was already 34 year old !

That was a period when the Indian culture of defeats in all possible sports was on the peak and the Indians were looking for a Saviour. In Dara Singh, India found a SuperHero who won not only in India but also in Commonwealth and the World championships. Dara Singh was much more than an Actor. He was a piece of Folklore and he became a social phenomenon soon. He was a hybrid of Myth and Folklore, larger than life evocation of the Desi Hero. He represented the Indian idea of Masculinity-The Mard, a He Man. He had the muscle prowess but no aggression. He evoked security, gentleness and the right kind of patriarchy. He was proud to be a Jat and an Indian.

He was a Pehalwan trained in the Indian style of wrestling. Dara’s victories against King Kong and Zybisco in the late 50s made him a legend. Lakhs of people would gather at the venues of his bouts. He brought wrestling from the Akhadas to the Drawing rooms of Affluent homes. He remained Undefeated in 500+ bouts in his lifetime, winning Indian Championship in 1953, the Commonwealth championship in 1959 and the World Championship in 1968, when he was into acting in Hindi films full fledgedly !

He did roles of Kings, Princes, Rebels, Mutineer, Jungle Boy, Samson, Hercules, Sikander and the greatest role of his life as Hanuman. There may be 300 odd types of Ramayans, but only one Hanuman-Dara Singh. He was, for most people, the embodiment of the Monkey God. Without him the Ramayan was never the same ! Dara Singh, I am sure, would have been the original choice of even Valmiki !!!

Dara Singh was the Indian Superman. Even when he started doing character roles, the Heroes were happy to work with him. In one interview ( he gave interviews very rarely-he used blush too much), he had said,” Out of all my roles, I liked my role in Anand-70, where I was very comfortable doing my real life role-that of a Pahilwan in an Akhada !” He was probably one of the few who worked in A, B and C grade films in his life with equal ease and aplomb. Whether it was Mumtaz or Amitabh, he remained Dara Singh-Rustic, Strong, Indian, Gentle, Protective and Chivalrous.

Dara Singh was born at village Dharmuchak in Amritsar district on 19-11-1928 to Surat Singh and Balwant Kaur. He was married to Surjit Kaur Randhwa on 11-5-1961 and they had a son. From his second marriage he had 3 daughters and 2 sons. At the age of 22, he went to Singapore and won several championships. At 24 he did his first film role in Sangdil-52 and he became a Hero at 34 years of age. He did 122 Hindi films, 22 Punjabi films, besides producing 3 and directing 9 films.

He continued wrestling up to 1970. In 1978, he established his Dara Studios in Mohali, Punjab. His last film came in 2012-“Ata pata lapata”. With Mumtaz he did 16 films out of which 12 were Hit films. In those days, he was paid 4 lakh rupees per film. Dara Singh died on 12-7-2012. His brother Randhwa died on 21-10-2013 ( this news was hardly noticed).

Many Bodybuilders tried to copy Dara Singh. Their films never succeeded because people knew who the original Superman was. Indrajit, Viju Penkar, Hercules, Azad and even Randhwa did few Dara-like films, but they were never accepted by the audience. Dara Singh was Unique. One may think that his films were seen and liked only by the lower strata of society or exclusive C grade film audiences, but it was wrong. Dara Singh films were ‘Super Deluxe’ versions of B and C class films and were liked by people from Top class to bottom class. I was a great fan of Dara films and rarely missed any of them.

Today’s film King Kong-1962, a stunt film, was made by Santosh production, Bombay. It was directed by “Trick Wizard” Cinematographer and editor Babubhai Mistry. The3 songe were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the Musical score was by the melody King Chitragupt. The cast of the film was Kumkum, Dara Singh,Chandrashekhar, praveen Chaudhary, kamal mehra, Parshuram, Sheila kashmiri, leela mishra, Uma Dutt and King Kong-the famous wrestler himself.

The story of how Kamal Mehra came into films is very interesting. One day, when the famous producer- director Kedar Sharma was in Delhi in connection with the premier of one of his pictures, he noticed a smart young man in a queue in front of the booking office of the Odeon cinema.

The film maker was struck by the lad’s personality and signed him up on the spot. Young Kamal Mehra then came to Bombay to star opposite Geeta Bali in Kedar Sharma’s ‘Thes’ -49. Subsequently the young man has featured in several films including Dhoon in which he played the villain. Today he plays comedy roles in most of his pictures. (from Filmi Year Book-1958)
He has worked in 50 films. He directed the film Naami Chor-1977 and produced 3 films. His last film as an actor was Jeena hai pyar mein-1983.

The story of the film King Kong-1962 was…..

KING KONG-1962 is easily the best film of Dara Singh from the 60s.It also established him as a popular hero of the B and C grade films.

The story is of the set pattern,In fact most of the DS film stories are so similar in content-give or take few changes like names etc-that one wonders why this dearth of stories for DS films. The simple reason is the audience of DS films never goes to his films for story or histrionic talents of the artists, but to see the fantastic muscle shows and bouts with variety of wrestlers.

In this film,a wicked prime Minister kills the king to usurp his throne. Before he kills them, the queen and her 2 sons escape and stay in a jungle incognito.
Jingu(Dara Singh) grows up to become a very powerful He Man.His brother Badal(Chandrasekhar)becomes a happy go lucky guy.Once DS saves Radhi(Kumkum) and her saheli Chhabili(sheila Kashmiri) from a strange Dinosaur like animal and kills it.Radhi starts loving Jingu and Chhabili loves Badal.

Meanwhile the king wants to send the existing ‘King kong’ title holder to the jungle to kill the animal, but learns about the heroics of Jingu and invites him, with family, to the capital to honour him. When Jingu reaches the Darbar, the king offers him to marry the Princess(Pravin Chaudhary).Jingu refuses.

The existing Kingkong challenges Jingu and there is a bout in which Jingu wins the title of new King kong. The king learns that he is the son of ex-king,so he captures Jingu and family.Jingu breaks the iron chains, destroys the palace and captures the evil King.

The king is punished. Jingu the King Kong is crowned as new King and all are happy-especially Radhi,Badal-Chhabili and the king’s mother for having taken the revenge.

Let us now enjoy the video song from today’s film…..
