Blog Day : |

From this new year 2023, we made a couple of new year resolutions. Unlike most new year resolutions, we have so far stuck to them. One resolution was, we will have a blog Century post every month. Second resolution was we will have 100 songs every month.
We are nearly halfway into the year 2023. When the year 2022 ended, we had exactly 17300 song posts in the blog. Today (27 May 2023), nearly five months later, we are onto post number 17800 !
Yes, this post marks, 178th century post for the blog that is song post number 17800 for the blog ! So we are now quite close to the magic number of 18000 songs in the blog !
Most songs that we are covering non a days fall into certain predictable categories. One is Blog Ten Year Challenge songs, where lyrics are typically sent by Prakashchandra. In these posts, we look at the songs that were covered on the same date ten years ago. We then cover a song from movies that are still unYIPPEED and therefore their songs are available for discussion.
Other categories of songs are those that are written by Avinash Scrapwala. These songs either introduce new movies, or they are less heard songs of 1970s or 1980s. Then we also have articles by our senior contributors M/s Arunkumar Deshmukh and Sadanand Kamath. Peevesie’s mom sends articles that typically combine two or more anniversaries of artists. Then on rare occasions, we are pleasantly surprised to find long interesting articles by Sudhir jee.
I too would like to write a few long articles. But the resolutions of one blog century every month and 100 plus songs every month takes up considerable toll on me and I am unable to find quality time that is required for long articles that need time. Still I managed to write one long article (on World Happinees Rankings) that gave me considerable satisfaction. It was followed by an article on World Donkey Day. I wonder how I used to find time for such articles fairly frequently in the past. It is very essential that I regain that lost form and write such articles that give me satisfaction. Now that I have achieved the target of Blog Century post for this month, and the monthly century post too is within striking distance, I should write at least one such article. So I hope to come up with another long article on a topic that we all are familiar with still we lack indepth knowledge on the topic. Hopefully this article that I am planning will be as well received as my article on world Happiness rankings.
As is my wont, these days I decide on the century song at the last moment. When the blog reached nervous ninetees a couple of days ago, I began to wonder what song to go for. I looked at various landmarks of artists, various anniversaries etc. Finally I zeroed in to an individual landmark. I found that an artist was reaching his century mark in the blog. No, not the maiden century but what would be his final century in the blog keeping in view the total number of songs that he has sung in his career.
The artist was three songs short of the century. When I started searching for songs by him, I realised that searching for his not yet posted songs wss a tall order, seeing that most of his songs are already covered in the blog. Finally I managed to locate three songs. The song that I decided to use as the century song was certainly a fit song for the occasion, but somehow I was not satisfied with the choice. Then I came across another song. This song was a bit unusual and less known song. I had never heard this song before. So hopefully most music lovers too may find this song a “never heard” song. Moreover, it is a rather unusual genre of song for this artist. That is what makes this song special.
The artist is Talat Mehmood. He sang a little over 450 songs in his career. This post introduces his 400th song in the blog.
When one thinks of Talat Mehmood, one typically thinks of a ghazal sung in a soothing velvety voice. This song is sung in a soothing velvety voice but it is not a ghazal. Surprise surprise, it is a bhajan ! Here Talat Mehmood is singing the praises of Lord Ram. This bhajan is being sung by Lord Hanuman in the movie !
The movie is “Lanka Dahan”(1952). “Lanka Dahan”(1952) was produced by Mohanlal Vahay (?) and directed by Raja Nene for Rani Productions, Bombay. The movie had Ranjana, Paro, Sapru, Ranjeet Kumari, Vijay Bali, Brij Kumar, Leela Gupte, Usha Marathe (Usha Kiran), S K Singh, Bachchalal Patel, Gadadhar Sharma, Bhujbal Singh, Battu, Minni etc in it.
This mythological film based on Ramayana had eight songs in it. One song has been covered in the past. Here is the second song from “Lanka Dahan”(1952). This song, a forgotten gem is sung by Talat Mehmood. S P Kalla is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.
Only audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.
With this song, the blog now has 17800 songs and Talat Mehmood now has 400 songs in the blog. Talat Mehmood now has just over 50 more songs to go in the blog.
I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their continued and sustained support and encouragement which has enabled this musical bandwagon to keep going on and hope. Here is hoping that this musical bandwagon will continue to roll and we will keep reaching many more destinations during this journey, and will continue to discover many musical gems along the way.
Thinking of musical gems, here is one such musical gem. Let us enjoy and savour this lovely bhajan.
Song-Basa le man mandir mein Raam (Lanka Dahan)(1952) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-S P Kalla, MD-Hansraj Bahl
Lyrics
basa le man mandir mein Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
banenge bigde tere kaam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
Raam naam jeevan ka saahara
Raam bina soona jag saara aa
Raam bina soona tan man dhan
soona tera dhaam
Raam bina soona tan man dhan
soona tera dhaam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
banenge bigde tere kaam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
ye duniya dariya ka paani
maaya ki nagri agyaani
ye duniya dariya ka paani
maaya ki nagri agyaani ee
apne paraaye sab matlab ke ae
saath Hari ka naam
apne paraaye sab matlab ke ae
saath hari ka naam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
banenge bigde tere kaam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
chaar dinon ki ye ujiyaari
phir teri duniya andhiyaari ee
chaar dinon ki ye ujiyaari
phir teri duniya andhiyaari ee
jeet usi ki hoti hai
jiske man mein baste Raam
jeet usi ki hoti hai
jiske man mein baste Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
banenge bigde tere kaam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
basa le man mandir mein Raam
