Today’s song is from the film Chand ki Duniya-1959.

Man has always been curious about the unknown matters like his future, after death existence or the various planets. Maybe this age-old desire promoted study of the Occult and the various Fortune telling sciences, everywhere in the world in different civilisations over thousands of years. Whether Fortune telling is a science or not is a matter of debate, but the fact remains that almost every person believes, at the back of his mind, that such sciences, in fact, were much developed in the early stages of mankind.

Most people wish to know about their future and thus the ” Neem Hakeem” ( people with half knowledge ) type of Astrologers and Palmists cropped up. When you go to them, they will use some worn out statements like ” actually you are very intelligent but people have no value for you ” or ” you are very good-natured, but people take undue advantage of your goodness ” etc. etc. Of Course, I am not doubting your intelligence or good nature. I know you are very intelligent really. So here is a small exercise for you.

From 1931 to 2000, about 7000 actors and actresses worked in films. In addition from 1931 till today, about 15000 or so films were made. What you have to do is just write down names of 100 Films on a paper in 2 hours’ time. Ok. You can take 4 hours. No cheating please ! Do not refer to any book, HFGK, Internet or an expert. Done ? Now check how many names of films you could write. Disappointed ? Take another test of writing just 50 names of Hero/Heroines in Hindi films, which you remember. This is easier, so only 2 hours are given.

Most people will realise that it is not as easy as one would imagine. The point I wish to make is that it is difficult to remember titles of films or actors’ names because it is not in our everyday schedule. We do remember some titles of films which are very easy, or connected to our memory. We remember films either for their stories, songs, actors or when films are seen with ” Special ” companions. This is about the usual films. But C grade stunt and action filmmakers have different thinking in giving titles to their films. They felt that odd titles would evoke curiosity and would attract an audience. Therefore there were very strange and odd titles of such films.

Did you ever see films like, Khooni Khanzar, Dagabaj Doctor, Shaitaan ka paash, Char chakram, Daku Rani Talwarwali, Jaadu ka Dandaa, Zinda Laash, Revolver Rani, Sindbad-Alladin-Alibaba, Flying man, Fighter Sheela, Khooni Darinda, Tarzan aur Jadugar, Tarzan aur Jadui Chiraag, Golden Gang, Murde ki jaan khatare mein, or Jadui Putli ?

When the Talkie films started , here too Mythologicals led the list. However the First Action Film in Talkie was ” Dagabaz Aashiq”-1932, closely followed by another action film “Do Badmash” made by Imperial and Ranjit respectively. After this there was no looking back. There was enough material available for Mythological, Historical, religious, social, fantasy and Costume films in India, with its rich Heritage, but for Action and Stunt films, movie makers looked to the west.

The legendary King Arthur, Robin Hood, William Tell, Zorro and Tarzan etc all became sources of inspiration for action and stunt films in India. Skillful adaptation and Indianization of western Heroes coupled with the fertile imagination of story writers in our studios provided enough fodder. It is through this that emerged the ideas of ‘Masked men’,’Hunterwali’ and various Baghis.OUT OF THESE THE TARZAN STORIES WERE MORE POPULAR AS THEY COMBINED MYSTERY, JUNGLES, SUPERHUMAN POWERS AND GREAT STRENGTHS WHICH TAMED THE WILD ANIMALS. COUNTLESS FILMS WERE MADE WITH TARZAN AS THE CENTRAL CHARACTER.

When the normal titles finished, the imaginative writers combined Tarzan with Aladdin, Delialah, Rocket, Gorilla, Mermaid, King Kong, Hercules, Cobra, Circus and even Fairyland. When this too was exhausted, they joined him with places like Delhi, spies like 303 etc. They gave Tarzan a Daughter also. When the Indianisation of Tarzan was complete, in came ZIMBO !

Whatever the title, the script ideas were more or less the same. It ensured that the Hero’s supernatural powers and strength was used and wild animals were shown in abundance.

Otherwise totally unknown, unheard of composers like, Momin, Ibrahim, Talwar, Peter-Nawab, Nisar,Tan Mohan, Prem Tandon, Vijay Honavar, Harbans, Motibabu, Shri Ram, Bipin Datta, S Madan, Saadat, S.Kishen, N.Chaudhari,J P Kaushik etc would give music to C grade films. Once in a while,Hansraj Behl, C.Ramchandra, Ravi, Chitragupta, Roshan etc were also found in C grade films.

When Russia sent its Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2 with dog Lyka into space, this gave a new subject for the filmmakers all over the world and the Indian filmmakers too were not behind them Some 2 or 3 films about space travel were made quickly within 2-3 years. One such film was Chand ki Duniya-1959. I had not seen this film and I could not get its storyline also anywhere. However from the information available , it seemed to be a Rocket going and landing on the Moon and returning safely with the astronauts. A love story was woven around space travel.

The film was made by Filmistan , obviously as a quicky. It was directed by Mohan Sinha – grandfather of actress Vidys Sinha, famous for the film Rajnigandha. Music was by S.D.Batish using his pseudonym Nirmal Kumar. The cast was Sohan kapila, Nalini Chonkar, p. Kailash, Ram Avtar, Badri prashad, B.M.Vyas Husn Banu and many others Qamar Jalalabadi wrote all the 6 songs.

NALINI is an interesting name. I said it was interesting, because, in Hindi films, as many as 12 NALINIs acted/ sang in films at slightly different times. Add to this list, the name of a Male actor ‘ Nalini Ranjan Roy ‘, who, thankfully, acceded to the suggestion to change his name to ‘Kanu’ Roy. ( It is another matter that even this name clashed with another artiste, Kanu Roy, who was MD, in the same period…causing serious ” Same Name Confusion”. ) The different NALINIs were…

Actress Remarks
Nalini Tarkhud many films
Nalini Jayawant many films
Baby Nalini Mera ladka-43
Nalini Nagpurkar Krishnarjun yuddha-34, Chacha Chaudhary-53
Nalini Chonkar many films
Nalini Borkar singer
Nalini Dhere Nagad Narayan-43
Nalini Gupte Ankh ki sharm-43
Nalini Mulgaonkar Didi-48, nakli Baap-49
Nalini Rao Talash-43
Nalini Saraf (later Seema Deo) Anand-70
Nalini Korgaonkar singer

Additionally, there were actresses called SuNALINI and MriNALINI too. You can also find names of some Baby Nalini s in the HFGK.

These Nalinis did not cause any Same name Confusion, because, being Marathi artistes, they wrote their names with Surnames, so their names remained different always. Easily, this name is the most ‘appeared’ name for different artistes, in the Hindi Film History !

Nalini Chonkar was the daughter of actor singer Krishnarao Chonkar, who sang and acted in Marathi and Hindi films and also sang on Radio. Nalini was born on 12-6-1938 in Bombay. She learnt Bharat Natyam for about 6 years as well as learnt singing from experts. Thus she became proficient in Song and Dance, both.

Her musical career started as a Playback singer in Marathi films in 1955. By then she had also acted in the film Bhanudas-53. She acted in few Marathi films as a Heroine. She used the name ” Neelambari ” in Marathi films. Her first Hindi film was Lalkar-56. She acted in 21 Hindi films namely, Rani Roopmati-57, Do Roti-57,n Bhabhi-57, Saazish-59 Madam XYZ-59, Chand ki Duniya-59, Chand mere aaja-60, Shravan kumar-60, Jo huwa so bhool jao-60, Piya milan ki aas-61, Modern Girl-61, Madan Manjiri-61, Baje Ghungroo-62, parasmani-63, Namaste ji-65, Mera Bhai Mera Dushman-67, Tatar ki Hasina-68 and Mata Mahakali-68.

She stopped Hindi films and went to do Gujarati films till 1984. She returned and did her last Hindi film Pathar Dil-1985.

After this she stopped acting and dancing in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati films. She started her own Dancing school called ” Nalini Chonkar’s Academy of Acting, Dancing and Singing” on Veera Desai Road, Andheri West, Mumbai-53.

Nalini Chonkar died on 26-5-2005.

Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhosle and Chorus. Enjoy….

zulfen hain teri bikhri huyin
aa aa aa aa

tere pyaar ki kaali raaton mein

kuchh daal mein kaala kaala
kuchh daal mein kaala kaala hai

o o o o
ye patli kamar bal khaayi huyi
aa aa aa aa aa aa

chhalke to nashe ka
chhalke to nashe ka pyaala hai
humse na chhipaao jaane jigar
kuchh daal mein kaala kaala
kuchh daal mein kaala kaala
kuchh daal mein kaala kaala hai

o o o o
kya dhoondh rahi hai tanhaayi
aa aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa

o o o o
kyun toot rahi hai angdaayi
o o o o
o o o o

teri aankh sharaabi
teri aankh sharaabi kyun phadke
shaayad koi aane waala hai
teri aankh sharaabi kyun phadke
shaayad koi aane waala hai
humse na chhipaao jaane jigar
kuchh daal mein kaala kaala
kuchh daal mein kaala kaala
kuchh daal mein kaala kaala hai

ye kisne
ye kisne
ye kisne jaadu daala hai
tera roop hua matwaala hai
humse na chhipaao jaane jigar
kuchh daal mein kaala kaala hai
