#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #

(Rajesh Khanna’s 82nd Birth Anniversary)
—————————————————-

Today 29th December 2024 is the eighty-second birth anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (29.12.2024-18.07.2012). On this occasion, we have paid our tributes to him by presenting a few songs picturised on him. In this post I am presenting one more song picturised on him.

This song is from the movie ‘Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 21.01.1984. In the year ‘1984’there were three movies released based on the same theme that dealt with our socio-political scenario and prevalent corruption and corrupt practices among governing institutions in the country. These were the movies Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’, ‘Inquilaab’ and ‘Yeh Desh’. However, if one notices, while the movie ‘Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’ was categorized as a movie from ‘social genre’ the other two movies viz. ‘Inquilaab’ and ‘Yeh Desh’ were categorized as ‘patriotic’ or ‘deshbhaktee pradhaan’ movies. Among these three movies, only ‘Inquilaab’ was said to be a successful movie. The movie ‘Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’ was praised by critics but it was said to be a commercial failure.

Rajesh Khanna acted in following nine movies released in 1984:-

SNo Movie Title Director Passed by Censor Board on
01 Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar Dasari Narayana Rao 21.01.1984
02 Aashaa Jyoti Dasari Narayana Rao 16.04.1984
03 Aawaaz Shakti Samanta 27.10.1984
04 Dharam Aur Qaanoon Joshi 03.08.1984
05 Durgaa *(a very special appearance) Shibu Mitra 07.04.1984
06 Hum Dono B.S. Glaad 21.12.1984
07 Maqsad K. Bapaiah 30.04.1984
08 Naya Kadam K. Raghvendra Rao 15.09.1984
09 Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai Sohanlal Kanwar 19.04.1984

Many of the above movies were praised for the performance by Rajesh Khanna, but most of them failed at the box-office except ‘Maqsad’, and to an extent ‘Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai’, ‘Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’ and ‘Aashaa Jyoti’(?). Rajesh Khanna won the ‘Best Actor’ award (1985) from ‘All India Critics Association’ for his performance in this movie ‘Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’.

I had watched this movie “Aaj Kaa MLA Raam Avtaar” at least twice during its initial release. For me this movie has one of the best performances of actor Rajesh Khanna. Not only that, this movie stands out as the best satire on the politics’ and democracy in our country. This must be perhaps for the first time when a movie gives the message that ‘people of the country should realize the power of their vote and they should vote judiciously to elect the right people and in turn the right government. Perhaps the moviegoers of the time were not equipped to understand the subtle messages contained in the movie and as a result the movie failed to get the appreciation and recognition that it deserved. In my opinion all citizens of this country should watch this movie at least once.

“Aaj Kaa MLA Raam Avtaar” was directed by Dasari Narayana Rao for ‘Shree Annapurna International, Madras’. This film was produced by T. Krantikumar. This movie was a remake of Dasari Narayana Rao’s movie ‘M.L.A. Yedukondalu’ made in ‘Telugu’. Dasari Narayana Rao himself played the titular role in the movie made in ‘Telugu’ in the year ‘1983’. for the Hindi remake as “Aaj Kaa MLA Raam Avtaar”. Dasari Narayana Rao also wrote the story and screenplay for the Hindi remake as “Aaj Kaa MLA Raam Avtaar”.

The cast of this movie included Rajesh Khanna (in title role), Shabana Azmi, Deven Verma, Madan Puri, Om Shivpuri, Satyen Kappu, A.K. Hangal, V. K. Madhukar, Mohan Choti, Shiva Raju, Viju Khote, Bhushan Tiwari, Ram Mohan, Javed Khan, Ajay Thakur, Chitti Babu, Anand, Ashok Shivpuri, Mehmood Khan, Shri Harimurthy, Sheshagiri Rao, Pattabhi, Mallikarjun Rao, Shubha Khote, Kamia Malhotra, Huma Khan, Baby Meena, Prema Narayan, Madhu Malini, Heena Kausar, Jezebel, and others. Asrani had guest appearance in this movie, while actor Shatrughan Sinha had a friendly appearance in this movie.

Dialogues of this movie were written by Dr Rahi Masoom Raza. Editing of this movie was done by B. Krishna Raju. This movie has six songs penned by Indeewar and composed to music by Bappi Lahiri. The playback singers for this movie are Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Bappi Lahiri, Sharon Prabhakar, and Mahendra Kapoor.

Rajesh Khanna, a barber becomes an M.L.A. and subsequently becomes Chief Minister. He organizes a dance competition at his darbaar. It is on this occasion that this song takes place, where Rajesh Khanna sings this song and the participants dance and perform with him. I am unable to identify the actresses performing in this song except Madhu Malini and Prema Narayan. Watch this song for Rajesh Khanna’s jigs and also see how his cabinet ministers respond by clapping , trying to ouytdo each other in their bid to please their master.

Lyrics for this song are by Indeewar and music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. Kishore Kumar, the‘voice of Kaka’ sings this song for Kaka in his inimitable style.

Enjoy!!!

One of the dancers- in the western dance style- looks like Tamanna. (hope i am right)

Madhu Malini (as you have rightly recognized) is in the Kathak style.

Hina Kausar in the south Indian style dance

Prema Narayan (as you have recognized) in Bhangra style

The lady in the white outfit is the only one I could not see properly to tell who she was. Must be some south Indian dancer.
