#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
After ‘Silsilaa – 1981’ Yash Chopra had taken a short-break from Direction and his next directorial venture was ‘Mashaal – 1984’. In between there were two films under Yash Raj Films banner ‘Naakhuda’ in 1981 and ‘Sawaal’ in 1982. He produced ‘Sawaal’ in ‘1982’ under his own banner ‘Yash Raj films’, but he didn’t do the direction for this movie. It was directed by Ramesh Talwar.
This movie had an impressive star cast including Waheeda Rehman, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Poonam Dhillon, Prem Chopra, Helen, Padma Khanna , Kalpana Iyer, Jagdish Raj, Yunus Parvez, Mac Mohan, Gautam Sarin, Vikas Anand, Harjeet, Ranveer Raj, Avtar Gill, Anjan Shrivastava and others. Manmohan Krishan and Madan Puri had a guest appearance in this movie whereas Randhir Kapoor & Swaroop Sampat had a special appearance in this movie. Music of this film was by Khayyam Saab and the lyrics were penned by Majrooh Saab. In fact, music for both the movies for ‘Yash Raj Films’, coming after ‘Silsilaa-1982’ was composed by Khayyam Saab i.e. the movies ‘Naakhudaa-1981’ and ‘Sawaal-1982’.
I had earlier presented three songs from this movie ‘Sawaal’ on the blog. I had also given a brief about the story of this movie in the earlier posts. I am repeating it here for the interested readers.
Dhanpat Rai Mehta (Sanjeev Kumar) is a smuggler and his wife Anju (Waheeda Rehman) is aware of this but his children Vikram (Randhir Kapoor) and Sonia (Poonam Dhillon) are not aware of this fact. Ravi Malhotra (Shashi Kapoor) is an honest Police Officer who has vowed to destroy the smugglers and wipe out this social menace. He falls in love with none other than Sonia (Poonam Dhillon). Very soon Inspector Ravi gets to know about the real face of Dhanpat Rai Mehta.
Meanwhile aware of Ravi’s intentions Dhanpat Rai also tries to clear him out but fails and the truth is out. Meanwhile before the real confrontation can happen, Vikram gets killed in Police-raids on their godown which he visits on a call from Yunus (Yunus Parvez) that the Police have raided the godown. Now Yunus communicated the message without knowing who had actually lifted the phone, since everyone is busy in Vikram’s engagement party (engagement with Reshmi (Swaroop Sampat)).
Shattered after his son’s death Dhanpat Rai decides to surrender to Police, but Shamsher Singh (Prem Chopra) who is also his partner gets to know about it and kidnaps Dhanpat Rai’s wife and daughter. Dhanpat Rai now decides to tackle with Shamsher Singh one to one, while Inspector Ravi also reaches for the climax. Both of them fight to save the mother and daughter in which Dhanpat Rai gets killed while he saves the life of Inspector Ravi. Shamsher Singh is arrested by the police.
I was studying in standard ninth during the years 1981-1982. I remember that the film ‘Naakhuda’ was discussed among our friend circle during those days. And the performance of Kulbhushan Kharbanda was also praised. I never watched both these movies then. Much later, when I ordered for the DVD of ‘Naakhuda’ in 2013-2014, it came in combination with the film ‘Sawaal’. I watched only one of them till now. This movie is available on internet where one can buy or rent it and watch it.
I have also come across the trailer of this movie on internet which is interesting to watch if one is interested to watch a glimpse of the movie and later can also watch this movie which is an interesting watch.
‘Sawaal’ 1982’ has seven songs (including one two part song). The playback singers for this movie are by Lata Mangeshkar, Nitin Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and Dilraj Kaur, Anwar and Pamela Chopra. Lyricist for this movie is Majrooh Sultanpuri and Music is composed by the maestro Khayyam Saab.
Today’s song is another lovely duet song from this movie which is sung by Nitin Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. Shashi Kapoor and the beautiful Poonam Dhillon lip-sync the song. It is a routine romantic song which is nicely composed by Khayyam Saab with his signature touch. Randhir Kapoor is also visible in the picturisation.
Let us now enjoy this wonderful song … The audio of this song has one stanza extra which is played as first stanza in the audio whereas the video of this song has only two stanzas, and this first stanza played in the audio is not included in the video or may be not picturised also.
