Mr Qartoon MA (1958) was produced and directed by Ved and Madan for Natraj Productions. The cast included Johny Walker, Shyama, Mehmood, Kumkum, Raj Mehra, Baij Sharma, Sheila Vaz, Daljeet, Chandabai, Ranjana, Rajan Haksar etc. Minoo Mumtaz appeared in a guest role as a dancer. The story of the film was written by the well-known novelist and short storywriter, Krishan Chander.
The VCD of the film is now available online but the qualities of both video and audio are not up to the mark. The film is in the genre of light comedy. The theme is that the real love and happiness in life does not come with wealth alone. They come from the heart. Three sad girls whose marriage proposals get broken because they are poor, travel to Mumbai to become rich. Two of the girls meet two persons – one who is a millionaire but pretends to be a driver to get a girl as his life partner who loves him and not his money. The other one is a waiter in a restaurant who pretends to be a rich person to woo one of the two girls looking for rich people. The result is hilarious with a message. The story of the film in details is as under:
Rosie (Sheila Vaz), a resident of Goa, travels in a train to Mumbai to make lots of money after rejecting the offer of her boyfriend, Richard (Rajan Haksar) to marry her because he is poor. She plans to stay with her sister who has married a rich person. On the way, Shyama (Shyama) and Kusum (Kumkum) board the same train and join Rosie in her compartment. Both look depressed because they have been left high and dry by men in their life because they did not have money for dowry. Rosie suggests both of them to accompany her to Mumbai where there is more respect for the money than for the human beings.
After reaching Mumbai, Rosie’s brother-in-law fails to reach the railway station to receive her because he and his wife are under seizure in his house by Hiralal (Raj Mehra) and his friend, Thomas (Baij Sharma) suspecting him for the theft of his precious diamond. Actually, when Hiralal was searching for the diamond in their house, Rosie’s sister had put the diamond in a pouch so that it would not be found in person.
After waiting for a long time at the railway station, Rosie, Shyama and Kusum take lift in a car driven by Lalchand/Lali (Mehmood) who drops them at Rosie’s sister’s house. Due to their sudden arrival, Hiralal suspends searching for the diamond and takes Rosie’s sister and brother-in-law to his office in the guise of some urgent work. Once in his office, Hiralal confines them in a room. After dropping the three girls, Lali tells Kusum that he hopes to meet her sometime later. Kusum agrees to meet him thinking that Lali is a rich man because he has a car.
Hiralal returns with his friend when three girls have freshen up. In order to search for the stolen diamond, Hiralal and his friend decide to become friendly with them. They take the three girls to a restaurant for lunch in their car. The girls think that Hiralal and his friends are rich people. In the restaurant, Chandan (Johny Walker) , the waiter, is impressed by Shyama. He is a day dreamer who thinks of becoming a rich person, having his bungalow and car in which he dreams of driving Shayma.
Kusum, on the other hand, goes with Lali in his car on a drive. When Lali drops her back home, Rosie and Shyama woo Lali assuming that he is a rich guy who travels in his own car. This creates jealousy among the three girls. Ultimately, Lali reveals that he is not rich but a driver of a rich man whose car he drives. Hearing this, all the three girls throw Lali out of the house. Lali calls Kusum aside and tells her that he likes her and would like to marry her. However, Kusum is not interested in marrying a driver.
True to his day dreaming, Chandan meets Shyama in the guise of a rich man. Madanlal and she falls for him. She invites Madanlal to join them for lunch where her other two friends are awaiting. Madanlal is in quandary as the lunch is in the same restaurant where he is a waiter as Chandan. Hiralal and his friend join the three girls at the restaurant. Lali is also present in the restaurant to see Kusum from a distance whom he genuinely loves. The situation is hilarious as Chandan as a waiter has to serve them but at the same time, as Seth Madanlal, he has to be with Shyama and her friends. Chandan handles the situation very delicately so that he is not exposed to his true status.
A situation comes where Madanlal would have got exposed in front of Shyama when she insists that he drops her at her house in his car – the one he had shown to her as his own. Actually, that car belongs to Lali, who is in reality, a millionaire. But to find true love, he has disguised himself as a driver. Lali helps Madanlal posing as his driver by dropping Shyama to her house. Lali. on a serious note, points out to Chandan that these girls have an illusion of getting rich quick by marrying the rich persons keeping the real love and happiness in the background. He advises Chandan to reveal the truth to Shyama to check whether she really loves him or is in love with his ‘money’. Next day, Madanlal reveals to Shyama that he is Chandan, the waiter. Shyama rejects his proposal to marry her. At home, both Shyama and Kusum are sad that their dreams of marrying the rich men are shattered.
Meanwhile Hiralal and his friend, Thomas, still in search of the diamond, suspect that the diamond may have been kept in one of the handbags carried by these three girls. In order to trap them, Hiralal and Thomas try to lure Shyama and Kusum by telling them that ever since they have met them, they are in love with them. Each of them separately proposes marriage. Money being the weakness of all the three girls, they fall to their trap, and they get abducted to Hiralal’s den. But diamond is not found in any of their handbags. They are pressured to tell the whereabout of the diamond. But in reality, none of the girls are aware of the diamond. They remain under house arrest.
In the meanwhile, Chandan goes to Shyama’s house to persuade her to marry him because he is genuinely in love with her. But he finds none of the three girls present and the house is open. He sees a pouch lying in the room in which he finds the diamond. With this, he goes to his house when he sees from outside his house a police team enquiring his whereabouts with his mother (Chandabai). After she refuses to tell, the police take her to the police station and is kept in police lock-up. Lali also visits Kusum’s house and, not finding her, he goes in search of her when he meets Chandan. But seeing a police officer, Chandan runs away and Lali follows him. In their zeal to be away from the police, they unknowingly enter a den which belongs to Hiralal, They find all the three girls tied. After a fight with Hiralal and Thomas, Chandan frees the three girls and asks them to go away.
Next day, Chandan’s mother is taken to the court for custody where she is charged with stealing the diamond from Hiralal’s house where she works as a maid. The judge is about to announce the rejection of her bail when Chandan enters the court and tells the judge that the person who has stolen the diamond is present in the court. He identifies that person as Hiralal. A shocked Hiralal puts his hand in coat pocket and is surprised to find the same diamond which he had lost. Actually, when Chandan had come to the court during the hearing, he had dropped the diamond in Hiralal’s pocket. Judge dismisses the case against Chandan’s mother, and she is released. Hiralal is happy that he got his diamond back. Rosie says that her few day’s experiences have taught her that more than the money, true love is essential for togetherness. She goes back to Goa to be united with Richard. Shyama unites with Lali who, in reality, is a millionaire while Kusum unites with Chandan who goes back to his job as a waiter.
This may be one of very few films in which both Mehmood and Johny Walker have avoided loud comedy throughout the film. In fact, Mehmood has a restrained role while Johny Walker indulges in light comedy. The film’s story moves at a steady pace without much of a diversionary sub-plots until moving towards the end where most of the scenes which I felt were redundant. During the last 15 minutes, the film’s story once again returns on its track. In short, this film could have been made interesting within a duration of 90-100 minutes, shedding redundant parts of the screenplay and a couple of songs.
This film had eight songs (including one song in two parts) written by Hasrat Jaipuri which were set to music by O P Nayyar. Six songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 7th song, ‘nain hamaare do pyaaliyaan ras waaliyaan’ rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Minoo Mumtaz in a double role, one as a girl and other as a boy. The context of the song is that Chandan (Johny Walker) and Lali (Mehmood) are on the run as a police constable is after them thinking them to be thieves. In order to save themselves, they unknowingly enter a den where they boast to have committed many murders. They get a royal treatment as the boss of the den is looking for such types of men for his gang. It is when they are having food, the dance show starts. After the dance show, Chandan and Lali are taken to the boss of the den who turns out to be Hiralal (Raj Mehra).
