‘Mera Bhai Mera Dushman (1967) was an obscure film produced by Jagdish Kumar (also known as Jay Kay) under the banner of Seth Productions and was directed by Mohammed Hussain. The cast included Premnath and Shyama in lead roles with the supporting cast of Nalini Chonkar, Jagdish Kumar, Kamal Kapoor, Rajan Haksar, Chand Burq, Mukri, Pratima Devi, Bela Bose, Maya Das, Laxmi Chhaya, Indira Bansal, Raj Verma, Polson etc. The film belongs to the genre of ‘family drama’.
The film’s producer, Jagdish Kumar was mostly associated with producer-director, J Om Prakash as the Production Controller, Executive Producer and then Producer. He has also acted in the film under discussion and in some TV serials. He is the second lead actor in this film paired with Nalini Chonkar.
Incidentally, this was the film after which the music director, Khayyam decided to take a sabbatical from the Hindi film industry. He felt that the films he was being offered were not his worth. The sabbatical continued for nearly 6 years. During this period, he devoted his time and energy to composing some of his finest non-film songs among 200 odd songs. Here also, he did with the top playback singers like Talat Mehmood and Mohammed Rafi. Begum Akhtar who was very close to Madan Mohan, chose Khayyam for her LP Ghazal album which was released in 1974. He returned to films with ‘Pyaase Dil ‘ (1973).
The VCD of the film is available online. I have watched the film in which there are some scenes which appear without context. This suggests that the VCD of the film is heavily edited out. The film’s story is as under:
Prem (Premnath), a truck driver and his unemployed brother, Jagdish (Jagdish Kumar) live with their widowed mother (Pratima Devi) in a lower middle-class locality in Mumbai. Both are known to be bullies in their locality with a difference. While Prem bullies those who are exploiting the poor people, Jagdish bullies shopkeepers as a part of extortions. Jagdish is attracted to a neighbourhood girl, Chhamiya (Nalini Chonkar) but she always taunts him of wasting his time without earning any money in a legitimate way. Prem has Jerry (Mukri) as his assistant while driving the truck.
One day, the mother suggests that the family should shift to their native place where they have agricultural fields to sustain them. But Jagdish has another idea. He wants to become a boxer in which with each flight in a village Dangal, he can earn as much as 100 rupees. The mother agrees as at least, he would earn some money instead of remaining unemployed. Jagdish trains himself as a boxer.
Once Prem’s truck gets stalled in a forest area due to the heating of its radiator. He goes in search of water where he finds Sarita (Shyama). She provides him with a bucket of water during which he exchanges pleasantries. Whenever Prem is on his truck driving duty on this route, he invariably stops his truck and meets Sarita. They become friends. Sarita is an orphan after she lost both her parents. She stays with her elder sister (Chand Burq) who is married to Rajan (Rajan Haksar), a boxing champion. Rajan has a manager, Balam (Kamal Kapoor) who looks after Rajan’s boxing interest.
Once Prem had a fight with Rajan on some issues at a truck rest stop when he knocked him out. Sinha (Raj Verma), one of the promoters of the boxing sports, who has witnessed Prem fighting with Rajan, sees the potential in him in becoming a champion boxer. He offers him a contract for six months to participate in boxing tournaments on behalf of his organisation for Rs.5000/- which he reluctantly agrees as per wishes of his mother. Sinha gets him trained as a boxer in his academy.
This development is not liked by the current boxing champion, Rajan and his manager, Balam. They argue with Sinha for promoting Prem but Sinha is firm to promote Prem. Balam hatches a plan through Sarita who has become close to Prem to dissuade Prem from fighting with Rajan in the boxing tournament so that he remains boxing champion. Balam takes Sarita in his car to Mumbai to convince Prem accordingly. Sarita meets Prem while Balam waits outside in the car when Jagdish, in his usual way, demands money by way of extortion. Balam takes him in his side and assures him that he would get much more than his extortion amount if he prevents Prem from boxing tournament. Prem assures him that it is a very easy job thinking that at first, Prem was not in favour of boxing as a means of earning money when Jagdish had first suggested to him. This time, Prem is bent upon having his boxing bout with Rajan.
Before the start of the boxing match between Prem and Rajan, Jagdish mixes sedatives in Prem’s milk because of which Prem gets knocked out by Rajan retaining his boxing championship. Jagdish gets reward for his treachery against his own brother. But Prem thinks that it was because of Sarita who had requested him not to participate in the boxing match against Rajan that has got to do with his defeat, Soon this misunderstanding is cleared when he comes to know that his own brother, Jagdish had been responsible for his defeat in the boxing match. So, there is a fight between Prem and Jagdish which is stopped with their mother’s intervention.
Sarita after the rebuff from Prem is in a depressed mood. Adding to her problem is that her sister is bent upon marrying her to Balam. She knows that Balam is not a good person but her sister is able to convince her that it was because of Balam that Rajan has become the boxing champion. If she does not agree to the marriage to him, Balam may desert Rajan plunging them into financial distress. Sarita falls to her sister’s emotional blackmail and she says yes to her marriage with Balam.
Now, the next round of boxing bout between Prem and Rajan is due. This time Balam tries a different strategy. He sends a forged letter purported to have been sent by Sarita to Prem to get married in a temple. Prem goes to the temple with his assistant Jerry. Not finding Sarita near the so-called temple, Prem goes inside the house where he gets abducted by Balam’s men and is confined to a room so that he does not reach to fight shis boxing match. Jerry goes back and informs his mother and Jagdish. While mother informs the police, Jagdish rushes to the place and releases Prem who runs away in a motorcycle to reach the boxing match venue while Jagdish continues to fight with Balam’s men. Prem knocks out Rajan in the boxing bout and becomes the new boxing champion while his brother Jagdish dies fighting with Balam’s men.
The film ends with a police team arresting Balam’s men while Prem takes the dead body of Jagdish for cremation. Sarita is on her way to meet Prem.
The film had six songs which were set to music by Khayyam. The songs were written by Kaifi Azmi with Majrooh Sultanpuri listed as a guest lyricist in the credit titles of the film. Probably, this is the first instance of a lyricist joining as the guest lyricist. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘ham jahaan kaa kaarbaar dekhte chale gaye’ written by Kaifi Azmi/Majrooh Sultanpuri and rendered by Asha Bhosle for Shyama with an emotional touch. Kamal Kapoor and Rajan Haksar can be seen in the song picturisation.
The context of the song in the film is that after retaining his boxing championship, Rajan and Balam host a party where Sarita (Shyama) sings a melancholic song on a happy occasion. The reason is that Prem (Premnath), to whom she considered her friend, came into her life at a time when she felt isolated in a family who had brought her up and is now bullying her for their own selfish reasons. Now Prem has casted an aspersion on her being responsible for his defeat in a boxing match through deceit which is not true.
It appears that the starting words of the first line of the song in the original soundtrack are missing. I did not find the record version of the song on saregama.com or other online sources to check the first line.
Editor’s note:With this post, the blog now has 3300 song posts containing the voice of Asha Bhonsle.
