‘Aawaaraa Baadal’ (1964) was produced by Kailash Kapur and J P Sehgal under the banner of Amarjyot Films. There is some confusion as to who had directed the film – Kedar Kapoor or B R Ishara. Film’s poster has the name of Kedar Kapoor as director while IMDb and a few other websites mention the name of B R Ishara as the director. Film’s credit title does not mention the name of Kidar Kapoor but it mentions ‘dialogues written and directed by B R Ishara’. There may be some story behind this confusion. The cast included Ajit, Ragini, Indira Billi, Ramayan Tiwari, Jagdish Sethi, Leela Mishra, Niranjan Sharma, Mridula, Iftikhar, Dhumal, Indira Bansal, Tuntun, Sujata, Helen etc.
The story of the film is broadly in conformity with many Hindi films of action genre of 1960s involving the King and his Mahamantri (Prime Minister). The King is either a titular head with all powers held by Mahamantri or Mahamantri becomes the king by deposing his King by a coup and holding him under house arrest. The king’s son, the prince is safely taken in a forest by a loyalist who trains him in using weapons and horse riding. When the prince grows up, he is ready to take revenge with Mahamantri. By this time, the king’s son has fallen in love with his neighbouring girl who is also desired by Mahamantri or his son. The prince with the help of armed villagers defeats Mahamantri and the deposed king is freed who crowns the prince as a new King. The newly crowned king gets married to his love interest who becomes the Queen.
The story of the film is as under:
Maan Singh (Jagdish Sethi) opposes King’s (Niranjan Sharma) soldiers forcibly extracting high taxes from poor farmers under the orders of Mahamantri (Ramayan Tiwari) who de facto hold the powers of the kingdom. Maan Singh is humiliated by the soldiers. He rushes to the King’s palace where the King is being entertained by dancers. He holds prince Kiran and threatens to kill him unless he orders withdrawal of high taxes on the farmers. The King agrees to withdraw all taxes but the Mahamantri overrules his King and orders the soldiers to take the King and the Queen (Mridula Devi) into the custody.
Meanwhile, Maan Singh abducts Prince Kiran and runs away with his wife (Leela Mishra) and his son, Babloo to a faraway place. Mahamantri orders his soldiers to capture Maan Singh and Prince Kiran and bring before him alive or dead. Maan Singh renames the Prince Kiran as Baadal. Both Baadal and Babloo are brought up together by Maan Singh and his wife and they grow up together and Baadal believes them to be his parents. Maan Singh teaches them to become the experts in sword-play to keep them ready to fight the tyrannical regime of Mahamantri.
Years have passed. Baadal (Ajit) and Babloo (Dhumal) have grown up. He always think of taking revenge with Mahamantri whose soldiers have killed Maan Singh. Baadal goes incognito with his black dress to King’s treasury and loot the money to be used in procuring weapons. Baadal has fallen in love with Aarti(Ragini), the daughter of the neighbour who is experts in weapon productions. Darshan (Iftekhar) the son of Mahamantri has also seen Aarti’s dance and is infatuated by her. He sends his Sipahsalar Sundar (Keshav Rana) to bring her for his entertainment. However, Baadal rescues Aarti from Sundar.
The news reaches to Mahamantri that a masked bandit in black dress (Kala Aadmi) is roaming in the kingdom who is responsible for looting the treasury. Mahamantri sends his son, Darshan to deal with him. However, Baadal is able to fool Darshan and gets recruited in his army as a soldier. His foster mother is not happy with his decision to join the army of the kingdom. She reveals that he is not Baadal and but Prince Kiran who has been under her care and Maan Singh when his parents were kept under house arrest by Mahamantri. With this revelation, Baadal is now more determined to take revenge with Mahamantri.
One day, Darshan sends Baadal with some documents to get them signed by Mahamantri in which his appointment as a soldier is also included. One of the documents is to adopt Darshan as King’s son to make him heir to the throne of the kingdom since Prince Kiran has not been found and he is presumed dead. When Mahamantri goes to the king to get it signed by him, Baadal is already hiding in the room to meet his real parents. He gets to know the plan of Mahamantri to make Darshan as the heir to the throne. He meets his parents after Mahamantri has left the room and assures them that he would get them released and eliminate Mahamantri.
Mahamantri is one step ahead of Baadal because he has already been told of the true identity of Baadal who can become an obstacle in his plan to make his son, Darshan the next king. So, he plans to eliminate Baadal (now Prince Kiran) and his parents. However, with the help of Babloo and Aarti and soldiers firmly standing behind Prince Kiran, he defeats Mahamantri and Darshan. Prince Kiran is crowned as the new King and Aarti as the new Queen.
The film had six songs written by Anand Bakshi (2), Javed aka Manohar Khanna (2), Javed-Anwar aka Manohar Khanna-Rahil Gorakhpuri (1) and Jaan Nisar Akhtar (1) which were set to music by Usha Khanna. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 4th song, ‘chanke moree paayal aur khanke moraa kanganaa’ which is rendered by Asha Bhosle on the words of Javed (Manohar Khanna). The song is picturised on Ragini. Ajit and Keshav Rana among others are present to watch her dance.
The context of the song is that Baadal (Ajit) has gone to Aarti’s (Ragini) house to give her father money looted from the treasury for making weapons. At that time, Sipahsalar (Keshav Rana) has come to abduct Aarti to be taken to Darshan (Iftikhar). He challenges Baadal and before they are about to start sword fighting, Aarti starts her dance. It is funny to watch that they stop sword fight to watch her dance and resume fighting after the end of her dance.
