Hullo Atuldom
There is a saying “That Birds Of A Feather Flock” together.
This space in cyberworld that goes by the name “ATULSONGADAY.ME” is where some birds or lovers of music of the genre called “Film Sangeet” congregate. The main aim initially, was to appreciate the efforts of one man called Atul who got the idea of compiling songs which he thought were important to him & were from his ‘List of Favourites’.
He began the journey on 19th July 2008 with this post. It was a short post but gave absolutely accurate lyrics of a song written by Kaifi Azmi & composed by Roshan. There were 13 posts in that July, that is the blog lived up to its name of “SONGADAY”.
The initial fans of the blog welcomed the fact that they were getting to see & hear the songs with the lyrics helping them sing along. But ‘good things’ always makes one crave for more of the same & Atul started getting bombarded with song-requests (FARMAISHes) & he created a tab that was called “Reader’s Farmaishes”. I don’t know the exact date, but sometime in the beginning of 2009 the flood-gates opened & he began posting more than ‘one songaday’. In that period there were days which had about 6-7 songs with the blog having 13 songs posted on a single day some time in 2013 (correct me if I am wrong Atulji).
Exactly 11 years ago, on 19th July 2014, the blog saw hectic activity for a period of seven to ten days. All those who were followers of the blog, frequent or sporadic contributors, were sending posts & the blog chugged on to Post Number 10000.

July 20th dawned with Atulji posting this song where he mentioned that he was trying to achieve the magic figure the previous day itself. In the post, he made a statement which was a positive way of looking at the situation & I quote:- “Today we are definitely going to touch the 10,000th song mark. What is more, this will be achieved when it is still 19 July 2014 in some parts of the world ! So the roundness of the world, which dictates that different nations have their own times comes to our rescue.”
This was the promised 10000th post.
It is 4020 days since that landmark was achieved.
Today, on the 6210th day of the blog’s existence, we have had six posts making the total number of posts to 19176. This July has already seen 51 posts.
Usually, on such occasions, Atulji writes meticulous posts, giving numbers etc. I am not trying to copy him. I am just thanking him for giving boost to my writing habit by posting whatever I send him no matter how late in the day it may be. I just want to thank him for introducing me to Like-Minded people who are more than friends now. They are are all at a call’s distance and the absence of some of the initial Fans of the Blog is missed terribly – I mean we are missing Bharatbhai who had a love for Lata Mangeshkar songs and some regulars like Lalithaji, Rajaji, Khyatiben, Nahmji etc. who used to be regular contributors too.
Yesterday, we were remembering Rajesh Khanna on his death anniversary. It was the anniversary of another stalwart Mubarak Begum who had passed away in 2016 at the age of 80. I don’t know much about this singer who was born in 1936 in Sujangarh, Churu, Rajasthan, British India. But I know a few songs sung by her, by rote (or by heart if I may say so). “kabhi tanhaayion mein yoon hamaari yaad aayegi“, “mujhko apne gale lagaalo” etc are the songs that introduced me to this singer. I liked her unique voice, a voice that was not thin like some of the singers of that period. Googling her discography gave the result that her last song in a film came sometime in 1981. I am presenting that song here.
It is from “Paanch Qaidi” (1981) which was directed by Shibu Mitra. It had Amjad Khan leading the cast with Sarika, Vijendra Ghatge, Girish Karnad, Mahendra Sandhu, Ranjeet, Zarina Wahab, Shakti Kapoor, Surendra Pal, Raza Murad, etc being the other actors. The film had music by Bappi Lahiri with Anjaan being the lyricist. Kishore Kumar was the only male playback singer with Asha Bhosle, Chandrani Mukherjee, Shobha Gurtu & Mubarak Begum being the female singers for the 5 songs.
I don’t know much about the story of the film. But I found this video on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WViqZ5R4FnI which show Mahendra Sandhu & Amjad Khan dressed as dancers so I am deducing that they are the GIRLS mouthing today’s song in the voices of Mubarak Begum & Shobha Gurtu
