Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 15
Back in 2021, I had started this ambitious series for posts to highlight the significant associations in Rafi Sahab’s career. I knew that very few and far between, songs of the major influencers on Rafi Sahab’s singing, were remaining to be posted in the blog, even in 2021.
Most of these stalwarts were old timers, like Naushad, S. D. Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan, Chitragupt, Ravi and C. Ramchandra etc. A few of them of them were more contemporary, like R. D. Burman and Laxmikant-Pyarelal, who were with him. They were the latest beneficiaries of Rafi magic, who were ‘faizyafta” till the end, in 1980. Both started in 1966-67 and continued. Even Kalyanji-Anandji was composing songs for Rafi sahab till the end of 70’s. Madan Mohan and Ravi did it throughout his career and till “Laila Majnu” in 1976, and was the only one who started in 50’s and ended and 70’s, apart from Naushad.
One cannot leave out O. P. Nayyar in this august gathering of starts of the golden era of hindi film music. He was the one who stopped well before the end. But what a melodious journey it was for both from mid 50’s to late 60’s.
In between the decades, there was Roshan, who passed the baton on to Rajesh Roshan, and also the regard for Rafi Sahab.
I have decided to end this series, which has gone on long enough. I am disappointed that I could not include Lata-Rafi duet here, a ghazal by Khaiyyam, or a Hindustani classical song by Naushad here.
Here is the list of 15 posts, ending with the present post:
Somehow 15 is a good number to end it and the final song is a ‘Qawwali’ composed by R. D. Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri is the writer. Here Manna De and Asha Bhonsle accompany Rafi Sahab. They are singing for Pran, Reena Roy and Shatrughan Sinha. This qawwali is not a great one, considering the team. Run of the mill, situation of a climax with villain attempting to murder. But I found the picturization, quite decently done and not tacky at all. The film is ”Chor ho to aisa” 1978.
Here is the end of this “long time in the making” series. I am judging this qawwali as not a great composition, but a decent one. Except Rafi Sahab, all the others were in the peak of their career. Sometimes, artists try to do too much, unnecessarily and are a jarring note in an equable group performance.

Nice post Nahm jee. When the post appeared and I read the title of the song, I know which song it is, since I had listened to it earlier. Thanks for a song composed by R.D. Burman.
Regards,
Avinash

Avinash ji, Thank you for reading the post and commenting. Like I said it is not among the best work of all the team members. Together, they make a formidable force, due to which the qawwali is significant. This qawwali can grow on us, if heard a few times.
Thanks and regards.

“Hum ko bulao ya na bulao, ham to pahunchne wale hain” is good catch phrase. Only today, I had ocassion to tease my cousin with this very phrase, for inviting me at the last moment, for a function at her home.
