Today we remember Ramchandra Narayandut Dwivedi whom we fondly admire and respect as Kavi Pradeep or ‘Rashtra Kavi Pradeep’ on his 28th Remembrance Day. He was born on 6th February, 1915 and he passed away on 11th December, 1998 leaving behind a great body of work, including poetry and songs in his voice. Many of the songs penned by him and sung by him have now become immortal heritage of our country. Today we pay our tributes to Kavi Pradeep on his Remembrance Day.On this occasion I am presenting a song written by him for the movie ‘Dashehraa-1956’.

I have been presenting songs written by Kavi Pradeep on this blog for the last few months. I had shared his songs in the past as well.

Out of 531 songs penned by him, 275 songs are available on the blog.

In one of my posts I had mentioned what I feel about his voice is for me – I have no words to describe his voice, because it cannot be expressed in words. It is a divine experience to listen to the songs sung by him.

I hope readers will not mind me repeating some excerpts from one of my detailed posts on Kavi Pradeep and my memories of his songs that I had earlier discussed on 06.02.2018 with this song ‘udtee chidiyaa behtaa paanee’.

I had in the above posts mentioned about Kavi Pradeep songs that become integral part of my life since my childhood days-school days and growing up years. I feel that people like me who were born in late sixties and early seventies and may be even later must have heard songs sung by Kavi Pradeep on loud speakers, radios and TV in India. I cannot forget ‘Aao bachchon tumhein dikhaayein’, and ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’, one sung by him and other penned by him, which werecompulosorily played on lodspeakers on every Independence Day and Republic day. Indian independence was earned the hard way and he conveys this message to the future generations so nicely in this song ‘ham laaye hain toofaan se kishti nikaal ke’.

Apart from abovementioned patriotic songs there is this song ‘tere dwaar khadaa bhagwaan’, which is one of my favourite Kavi Pradeep songs. I can listen to it repeatedly. The agony of partition gets conveyed so tellingly in this song- ‘aaj ke insaan ko ye kya ho gaya’.

Regulars on this blog are aware that I am big fan of poet-lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi and on this blog I had shared lyrics of many of his songs and also shared articles about his songs. Incidentally, later now, when I am going through Kavi Pradeep’s filmography I have noted that Kavi Pradeep was a forerunner of Sahir Ludhianvi, when it came to conveying messages of humanity.

There was a phase (in my life😊) when I had started collecting cassettes and listening to them on my mono-cassette recorder (Philips). That period started from somewhere in 1985/1986 and lasted up to say till 2016. (In the meantime the cassette player broke down and later my attempts to get it repaired failed. When I came back from Kenya, after finishing my project (2017-2019), I once again checked at Vadodara if the cassette player can be getting repaired but by this time it had become obsolete).

Out of the many cassettesin my collection there was a cassette containg songs sung by Kavi Pradeep. In those struggling days on professional front, listening to the songs by Kavi Pradeep brought solace and comfort to me and made me feel contented and grateful for what I had. At the same time his lyrics kept me motivated and inspired me to keep striving, doing one’s duties and leaving other things to the will of the Almighty.

That time the songs in the cassette were the only Kavi Pradeep songs that I had access to. Later on one more album was released by HMV which had some other songs penned by Kavi Pradeep and that made me aware of other songs of Kavi Pradeep that were sung by other singers.

What I feel is that Kavi Pradeep had always written and sung with passion, wearing his heart on his sleeve, in all genre of songs whether patriotic, devotional or philosophical. Listening to his passionate voice singing those songs is a divine experience.

When I came into the contact with this blog, I became aware of the Geet Kosh and gradually become equipped with all the copies of geet kosh. That is how I became aware of Kavi Pradeep’s filmography.

I would also like to repeat one incident in this post here, that I had mentioned earlier, which demonstrate the influence that Kavi Pradeep wields over people. I was at Kota-Rajasthan at that time in 1988-89. I had bought this compilation of Kavi Pradeep’s songs released by HMV. I presented this to one of my Senior Colleagues who was from Paudi Garhwal. He had a son and a daughter who was around 4-5 years old at that time. After a gap of around 6-7 years when I was on tour to New Delhi I got a chance to visit this senior of mine and stay with them. As we were discussing his daughter came to me and said ‘Uncle, aap wahi Uncle ho na jinhone hamen Kavi Pradeep ji ki cassette di thi’.

What I want to put here is that if we the citizens of this country nurture good values, preserve the great heritage of our history, arts and culture, and pass them on to the new generations, then the next generation too will be well equipped and well versed with this great heritage.

Our Hindi movies are doing great job in the service of nation and national integration. Kavi Pradeep has played a stellar role in this respect. His poetry and songs need to be passed on to the new generation.

Today I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Dashehraa-1956’. It is a nice philosophical song sung by Mohd Rafi and composed by N. Datta. Listening to this today’s song reminds us another similar type of songs like ‘dekh tere sansaar ki haalat’, ‘mukhda dekh le praani’, ‘pinjre ke panchhi re’, ‘doosron ka dukhdaa door karne waale’, ‘kabhi dhoop kabhi chhaaon’, ‘hamne jag ki ajab tasweer dekhi’, ‘koi laakh kare chaturaayi’ written by Kavi Pradeep.

Listening to the songs sung by him has always been a source of great motivation and inspiration to me, apart from bringing peace of mind to me.

Only when I was a grown up person that I began to understand the real meaning and depth in his songs which I was not able to understand during my adolesence years.

Today’s movie ‘Dashehraa-1956’ was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi for ‘Navkala Niketan, Bombay’. Ramesh Vyas was the producer of this movie. The cast of this movie included Shahu Modak, Nirupa Roy, Roop Kumar, Gope, Gajanan Jagirdar, S.N. Tripathi, Surendra, Yashodhara Katju, Kumkum, Jagdish Kanwal, Kamal, Heera Sawant, Rooplakshami, Suryakant, Narbada Shankar, Mohan Choti, Madhav Kale, Bela Sorkar, Jaya Rao, Tiwari and others. Rajan Haksar, Manorama, and Ramesh Thakur had a guest appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by the censor board on 25.02.1956.

“Dashehraa” has eleven songs. They were written by Kavi Pradeep (ten songs) and Saraswati Kumar Deepak (one song). Music for this mythological/devotional movie was composed by N. Datta. The playback singers for this movie were Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kavi Pradeep, Shamshad Begam and Asha Bhonsle. Lata Mangeshkar, Kavi Pradeep, and Shamshad Begam had one solo song each in this movie. Mohd Rafi’s voice was used in three songs and Asha Bhonsle sung five songs in this movie.

Let us listen this wonderful song and pay our tributes to Kavi Pradeep!

Chorus

Lyrics

baithhaa prabhu aakaash pe ae
lekar kalam dawaa aat
har kaagad par din raat wo
ae jee likhtaa re ae sab kee baat

mere maalik kee dukaan pe
hai sab kaa khaataa re
jitnaa jiske bhaag mein hotaa
wo utnaa hee paataa
mere maalik kee dukaan pe
sab kaa khaataa

kaljug waalon
o kaljug waalon
kaljug waalon
sunon pate kee
main ik baat sunaataa
mere maalik kee dukaan pe
hai sab kaa khaataa re
jitnaa jiske bhaag mein hotaa
wo utnaa hee paataa

mere maalik kee dukaan pe sabkaa khaataa

naheen chaley uske ghar rishwat
naheen chaley chaalaakee
uskee apne len den kee
reet badee hain baankee
hey re bhaai reet badee hai baankee
arey punya kaa bedaa paar karey wo
o o o
arey punya kaa bedaa paar karey wo
paap kee naav doobaataa
mere maalik kee dukaan pe
hai sab kaa khaataa re
jitnaa jiske bhaag mein hotaa
wo utnaa hee paataa

mere maalik kee dukaan pe sabkaa khaataa

kartaa hai insaaf sabhee kaa
hari aasan par baithh ke
uskaa faislaa kabhee na paltey
laakh koyee sar patke
re bhai
laakh koyee sar patke

samajhdaar to chup rehtaa hai ae
o o o
samajhdaar to chup rehtaa hai
moorakh shor machaataa
mere maalik kee dukaan pe
hai sab kaa khaataa re
jitnaa jiske bhaag mein hotaa
wo utnaa hee paataa

mere maalik kee dukaan pe sabkaa khaataa

ujlee karnee karo re bhaiyyaa
karam na kariyo kaalaa re
koi karam na kariyo kaalaa
dekh raha hai laakh aankh se tumhen dekhnewaalaa
re bhai tumhen dekhnewaalaa
achchee khetee karo chaturjan
aa aa aa aa aa
achchee khetee karo chaturjan
samay guzartaa jaataa
mere maalik kee dukaan pe
hai sab kaa khaataa re
jitnaa jiske bhaag mein hotaa
wo utnaa hee paataa re
mere maalik kee dukaan pe sabkaa khaataa
