‘Dil Ka Raja’ (1972) was produced by A. A. Nadiadwala and was directed by P Madhavan. The cast included Raj Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Ajit, Bindu, Indrani Mukherjee, Jagdeep, Meena T, Janakidas, Uma Dutt, Maqbool, Sheikh, Uma Khosla. Waheeda Rehman made a special appearance in the film. It was a remake of producer-director, P Madhvan’s Tamil film, ‘Enga Oor Raja’ (1968) with Sivaji Ganesan, Jayalalitha and Sowcar Janaki in main roles. The Tamil film was later remade in Telugu as ‘Dharma Daata’ (1970).

I was not aware of the existence of this film. Perhaps, this film did not fare well on the box office front. Recently, I watched the film on a video sharing platform. The film’s story is a journey of a royal family from the luxurious life to the struggling labourers in Mumbai after they donate their wealth for charities over a period of time. At the end, their hard work pays off and they are able to reclaim their mortgaged ancestral home. Raj Kumar played the double role of a father and a son.

The story of the film is as under:

Raja Vichitra Singh (Raj Kumar) of Ramnagar has been generously donating the wealth accumulated by three generations of his family for the betterment of poor, for upgradation of primary school to high school, construction of hospitals and many more things. His Accountant, Dharamdas (Uma Dutt) cautions him by saying that he should consider the financial position of the family in the changed circumstances before doing huge charities. But Raja Vichitra Singh ignores his advice by saying that in his view, the humanity is more important than the wealth. Raja Vichitra Singh is also known for eschewing the revenge policy.

Thakur Gajendra Singh of Surajnagar comes to know of Raja Vichitra Singh of his high charities and assumes to be wealthy king worthy of having an alliance with the family. He visits Raja’s house and introduces himself to be related to him through their grandfathers. He asks for his adopted sister, Gauri’s (Indrani Mukherjee) hand in the marriage for his son. As usual, on the question of dowry, Raja Vichitra Singh’s sycophants forces him to pay a huge dowry and the cost of higher studies in the USA for the groom. He comes to know from Dharamdas that he has a shortfall in the treasury to pay the dowry and other expenses.

On the wedding day, Raja Vichitra Singh faces humiliation from Thakur Gajendra Singh in front of the guests for not able to pay the dowry and meet his other commitments. Raja fulfills his commitments by mortgaging his ancestral palace. This incidence shocks his wife, Lakshmi (Waheeda Rehman) and dies falling from the staircase. With no option left to redeem himself and Gauri refusing to attend the funeral of Lakshmi, Raja Vichitra Singh decides to leave Ramnagar with his two sons and a daughter and gets relocated in Mumbai to earn enough money to get back his ancestral palace so that he can honourably return to Ramnagar. In Mumbai, Raja Vichitra Singh drives Tonga while his two sons, Raju and Chakravarty work as labourers.

Years pass. Raja Vichitra Singh has now become a taxi driver while his two sons, Raju (Raj Kumar) and Chakravarty (Jagdeep) have grown up and are working in a construction company and in a hotel, respectively. His daughter, Vidya (Meena T) has been looking after the household. Raja falls in love with his employer’s (Randhir) daughter, Geeta (Leena Chandavarkar) who is a feminist. Chakravarty has developed a soft corner for a hotel guest who calls herself as Rani of Beenapur (Bindu).

In Surajnagar, Gauri, now a widow, has a son and a daughter. In order to bring families of Raja Vichitra Singh and Thakur Gajendra Singh together, Gauri is keen to get her son married to Vidya. But Raju is against the alliance in the background of the humiliation they had received from Thakur Gajendra Singh. Raja Vichitra Singh has soften his stand and now he is in favour of the alliance after Gauri gives the explanation as to why she could not attend the funeral of her mother as Thakur Gajendra Singh had prevented her.

Things gets more complicated when it transpires that Geeta is the daughter of Gauri who has come to Mumbai after her father’s death and has been staying with her uncle. With this revelation, Raju feels cheated and keeps the distance from Geeta. In order not to create a rift between father and the son, Geeta returns to Surajnagar to be with her mother, Gauri.

For the time being, the first priority for Raja Vichitra Singh is to free his ancestral palace from mortgage which may facilitate to bring about reconciliation between the children of Raja Vichitra Singh and Gauri. Raja has accumulated money to get his ancestral palace freed from mortgage but he is still short of some money. He gets coned by a person who promises him to get the loan from a moneylender and in the event he loses all his savings. It was trick played by Thakur Gajendra Singh so that Raja will not be able to free his mortgaged ancestral palace and he would bid for the palace in the auction. Raju gets this information from Geeta that Thakur has come to the moneylender’s house to collect the looted money of his father.

Raju goes to Moneylender’s house and after a fight, he gets back the brief case containing the money. In the meanwhile, Raja Vichitra Singh has left for Ramnagar with whatever the amount left with him. When Raju with Geeta and Vidya also reach Ramnagar. Raja Vichitra Singh has already reached inside his ancestral house and gets emotional, remembering his good old days. But Thakur Gajendra Singh has already arranged with the help of the local goons to destroy the palace by dynamites. Raju reaches in time to disconnect wires attached to multiple dynamites and goes inside with handcuffed Thakur Gajendra Singh. In keeping with his nature, Raja Vichitra Singh pardons Thakur Gajendra Singh. The families of Raja Vichitra Singh and Thakur Gajendra Singh unite amicably paving the way for the marriage of Raju with Geeta.

The film had five songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by R D Burman. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the two remaining songs – the 4th and 5th songs, ‘sundar ho aise main jidhar chaloon ik baar/sundar ho aise tum jidhar chalo ik baar’ which is a double version solo songs rendered by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi separately. Asha Bhosle sings for Leena Chandavarkar while Mohammed Rafi sings for Raj Kumar. The dual songs are thematically almost similar to a popular double version song, ye mard bade dil sard bade in ‘Miss Mary’ (1957) representing a dual between a feminist and a male chauvinist.

The context of the song is Geeta (Leena Chandavarkar) is on a picnic with her friends. They sing a song with her feminist trait. Raju (Raj Kumar) is doing some survey work and his presence creates some problems for Geeta. Later, she comes to know that Raju is working in her father’s company. They fall in love with each other. But both have ‘blow hot blow cold’ attitude. So, once when both were spending time on a beach, they start arguing on some issue. Raju pulls her toward the sea water and starts singing the song giving a counter to her feminist view.

With these two songs, all the songs of ‘Dil Ka Raja’ (1972) have been covered on the Blog.
