#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

#1300th Post# Chal Saathhee chal… chal saathhee chal …

In my previous post here, I have described how I discovered this great musical blog and how I become associated with it first as a visitor and subsequently as a lyrics contributor. I had developed some inclination (flair?) for writing from my younger days. My first article was published in a Marathi newspaper ‘Dainik Shivshakti’ published from Akola (Maharashtra). My article was about cricket where I had expressed my views about the dropping of Chetan Chauhan from the Indian cricket Team of 1980-1981.

After starting as a lyrics contributor I became a frequent visitor on the blog. I had discovered a vast treasure trove of Hindi Music here. Moreover I was also reading the detailed posts of senior contributors on this blog that enriching my knowledge of Hindi Film Music of the golden years of Hindi Cinema.

Initially, I shared lyrics of songs that were either my favorite songs or they were songs of nostalgic value for me. Later my song selection got diversified and I started listening to songs sung by singers of yesteryears. I started sharing the lyrics of these songs in the blog as well.

The first major bit of knowledge that I gained after joining the blog was about the number of songs created in HFM till 1980. Posts by our editor Shree Atul jee contained details of the number of the songs created in Hindi Films from 1931 to 1980. This new found information made me realise how vast HFM was and how little was my exposure to it till then. Atul jee also used to mention that there was the possibility of some songs getting lost with time. He gave an estimated figure of 25000 available songs from 1931 to 1980. That gave me an idea of the vastness of this HFM ocean that I was supposed to swimin with likeminded fellow music lovers. In addition, there were songs created from 1981 onwards as well, which was the time that yielded many favourite songs of my school going days.

Exposure to all this HF music had a salutary effect on me. Earlier I was confined to a smaller list of songs namely my favourite songs and songs of nostalgic value. My association with this musical bandwagon enabled me to shed that limited world view of HFM and I began taking interest in all the songs of HFM, including very old songs.

After being a regular lyrics contributor on the blog for nearly six months I sent my first article on this blog, and it got posted on 26.02.2013 here. And thereafter I got regular opportunities to share my articles with my memories of movies and songs and the journey of personal life with music always behind being a strong motivational force.

And then the second ‘big thing’ was this article by Shree Sudhir jee, which totally changed my perspective on a ‘musical compositions and the listening of songs. I must say that after reading this article the musical journey became more interesting and enjoying for me. From that point I was more into listening of songs irrespective of my preferences and treating every composition as a great effort by all the creators involved in creating it.

I am reproducing the text of Sudhir jee’s post here which I would request all music lovers to read, think, and ponder on it. This article was posted on the blog on 12.06.2016 with this song. This was the 12000th post on this blog.

From the vantage point where we stand today, at 12000+, there still is an ocean waiting to be uncovered. Each one, a gem in its own right. Each one having a little uniqueness about itself, and yet not losing the genre of being attractive and pleasing. Just come to think of it. Each of these songs were created, one song at a time. Today, we have a hard disk full of tens of thousands of these creations, and we are spoilt for choices. We make lists of favourites, we short list our preferred artists, we listen to selections. But have we tried to listen to it all, one song at a time? There is a small coterie of music lovers around me who are getting into just this habit now – myself, Bakshi ji, Chari sir in Chennai, and others. And as I progress slowly through this ocean, digging for and picking up what seem to be stones in the darkness, I find that they are actually gems that are layered with the grime of the dust of time.

That is when this stunning realisation came to my mind. Yes, each of these songs were created, one song at a time. And I tried to think, to picture in my mind, the team that came together to create this song – what were they thinking, what were they thinking of attempting to do, as they laboured through the steps to write, to compose, to render and to record these melodies. And I realised – with every song, the team that came together to create it, they had just one thought, one purpose, one aspiration in mind – that this particular song is going to be the best song that was ever created. And then, with this thought in my mind, the entire perspective changes. As I am listening to a song, every other song, every other preference simply fades away. There are no comparisons, there are no benchmarks. It is this one solitary song that is playing, it is this one solitary song that is existing in the moment. And for that moment, that song is the best song ever created – har chehra yahaan chaand, to har zarra sitaara. . .

And suddenly, I am humbled. I feel it is not in my power to seek preferences and to create favourite lists. I have never created a song in my life. Who am I to judge the stalwarts. Yes, I know the histories of their careers, I know of the meteoric flights and the fading demises. All because ‘someone’ judged. Today, as I sit and listen to the songs, one song at a time, I realise there is nothing about it to judge. For that moment, that song is the best ever song, that set of artists are the best artists ever. And I find myself without choices, winning an all-consuming freedom to listen to each and every song, and resonate in my heart the feeling of its creators – this is the best song ever to be created. (These are very personal perspectives and experiences, and I know probably most may not agree with me.)

Just over ten years have passed after this article was posted on this blog. Regulars on this blog might have noted the change in my presentation of songs over the last one decade. Now a days, the songs presented by me bear no correlation to my choices, preferences or favorites. In the past, I would select a song in advance to go with my article, nowadays when I am sitting to share a song, even I have no idea which song I will select and finally share. This is clearly a major change that I ca see in my articles that I present now a days.

So, the journey continues. The song being presented here gives the same message-“Chal Saathhee chal chalta jaaye har ek pal.”

This song is from the movie ‘Ishq Ishq Ishq-1974’. Kishore Kumar is the singer. The song is picturised onthe evergreen Dev Anand climbing up a mountain with lots of young kids. Master Satyajeet and many others can be seen with him in this Himalayan mountain hiking expedition. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist, and music is composed by R D Burman.

Let us listen to enjoy this wonderful song …
