‘Ishq Ishq Ishq-1974’ was directed by Dev Anand for his home productions ‘Navketan International Films Pvt Ltd, Bombay’. It was a ‘social movie’ passed by the Censor Board on 08.11.1974. I was more than six years old when this movie was released. However, I have no recollections of watching this movie at that time. I did not get to watch this movie even later. This movie is available online and I may watch it there in future. However, our dear Satyajit jee has watched this movie and he has given the story of this movie as follows:-
“This movie is a romantic drama set against the majestic backdrop of the Himalayan Mountains. The film explores themes of love, loss, self-discovery, and the spiritual journey of a man haunted by heartbreak. Dev Anand plays the central character who retreats to the serene hills to heal his emotional wounds but finds himself drawn into a complex web of relationships and destinies.
The story of the movie is:
Dev Anand plays Dhun, a melancholic musician and teacher from India who travels to Nepal in search of peace and escape from his painful past love affair. He joins a hill school to teach music and immerse himself in the tranquil mountain life. While in the serene environment, Dhun forms a close bond with the children and villagers.
One day, Dhun rescues a local girl named Pooja (played by Zeenat Aman), who has lost her memory following an accident. Dhun helps her recover, and during this time, they fall in love. Just as things begin to look promising, Pooja regains her memory and realizes that she actually belongs to a wealthy and conservative family.
Things take a dramatic turn when it’s revealed that Pooja is engaged to a powerful man (played by Kabir Bedi). Her family refuses to accept her relationship with Dhun due to class and status differences. Heartbroken once again, Dhun is forced to leave. In a parallel subplot, a local woman (Shabana Azmi in a supporting role) also harbours feelings for Dhun, adding emotional depth and inner conflict to the story.
The story concludes with Dhun walking away from worldly attachments, symbolizing his final spiritual detachment. The film ends on a somber and introspective note, emphasizing the loneliness and sacrifice that often accompany pure, unfulfilled love.
The film is visually stunning, shot extensively in the Himalayas and Nepal, capturing breath-taking mountain scenery rarely seen in Hindi films of that era.”
Our senior and founder member of this blog Raja Saab also has fond memories of watching this movie in his childhood days. In one of our discussions he mentioned that this movie flopped badly in spite of having very good songs. He specially remembers the song under discussion (obviously because he was a school going childat that time) and liked it very much. This song takes place in the movie (in Raja Saab’s words) when Dhun (Dev Anand) is leaving the school and the children are heartbroken at this development.
Thi song is a nice hummable song where Anand Bakshi has once again used his favorite phrase ‘baaghon mein’ followed by not bahaar- but ‘phool’ this time, in the lyrics of the song.
‘Ishq Ishq Ishq-1974’ has Dev Anand, Zeenat Aman, Premnath, Kabir Bedi, Shabana Azmi, Nadira, Trilok Kapoor, Jeevan, Iftikhar, A.K. Hangal, Gautam Sarin, Kuljeet, Maruti, Janakidas, Madhup Sharma, Dhanna, Birbal, Poonam, Komila Virk, Satyajeet, Bunty, Farooque, Guddi, Padmini, Ratan Gaurang, Uttam Raj, Kishan Bahadur, Bihari, Rashmi Gupta, Nargis Karim, Farah Ali, Jackie Ferns, Neela Senapati and others. Shekhar Kapoor, and Zareena Wahab had made her debut with this movie. Sudhir and Nana Palsikar were in guest appearances in this movie.
This movie ‘Ishq Ishq Ishq-1974’ has eight songs penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman.
Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, and Sushma Shreshtha were the singers. Out of the eight songs six songs have been posted on this blog.
In spite of having good songs none of the songs from this movie made it to the annual list of Binaca Geetmala of that year, which means the competition was very tough.
Let us enjoy this special and heart touching song in the voice of Kishore Kumar.
