Blog Day:6528Post No:20306

Today’s song is from a Comedy film – Badhati ka naam Dadhi-1974.The film was produced and directed by Kishore Kumar, for his own banner “Kishore films, Bombay “. The Music Director was Kishore kumar. The story writer, Screenplay writer, Dialogue writer, Lyricist and the lead Actor was also Kishore Kumar. Besides him, the cast included I.S.Johar, Master Bhagwan, Maruti, Sunder, Amit khanna, K.N.Singh, Debutante Bhappi Lahiri, Special appearance by Bindu, Anwar Hussain and several artistes with single word names- Ashu, Leena,Jenny, Milli, Effie, Katy, Kavita, Ellis, Bulbul,Mona, Chintu and few others.

This was an out and out comedy film- atleast it was expected to be a comedy film ! Kishore Kumar made K.N.Singh do a comedy role. Not only that, but he also danced and lip synched a comedy song. There was also another song in the film in which Bhagwan, Sunder, Maruti and I.S.Johar can be seen singing in their own voices. Bhappi Lahiri also sang one song in this film.

The film had a bizarre story. A cranky multimillionaire declares that he will give half of his wealth to his heir who has the longest beard in the world. The film had very amusing and unimaginable comic scenes. With Kishore Kumar there is no shortage of comedy. Bhagwan as Dr.Ghussawala, Sunder as Dr.Thappadwala and Maruti as Dr.Dandawala, with even Bhappi Lahiri as Bhompoo created havoc. But the film was not very successful. Probably these doctors exceeded the dose of comedy !

The role of a comedian in a film has been an essential part since the beginning. There have been many great Comedians in Hindi films and the tradition continued till about the 80s. After this period, the format of Hindi films changed drastically and Comedians disappeared. The Heroes themselves started doing comedy, so there was no scope for a separate and individual comedian, as such.

Comedians like Mast Fakir, Harold Lewis ( later called Majnu), Noor Mohd. Charlie, Ghori and Dixit starred as comedians during the silent cinema period. After Talkie films started, Charlie, Ghory, Dixit and Kesari were comedians in the early era. Ghori and Dixit had copied the Laurel and Hardy style. There was a comedian called Durga mota in the Lahore films. Out of these, Charlie came in the limelight and became a famous comedian. V.H.Desai was also a famous comedian, perhaps he was the only highly educated actor in those days. He was B.A., LL.B.

After these old comedians, a new crop of comedians like Damuanna Malavankar, Bhudo Advani and Mirza Musharraf became well known. During this period Yakub and V H Desai also made a mark, though later Yakub did villain and side roles. Then came Gope and Jeevan as comedians. Jeevan however branched out as Narad in Mythological films and then became a comic villain till the end. Fatty Prasad was another comedian in those days.

Then after the 50s started, came Kishore kumar, Bhagawan, Omprakash, I S Johar, Rajendranath, Anoop kumar, Jagdeep,Mohan choti, Keshto Mukherjee, O P Ralhan, Asit sen, Ram Avtar, Sunder, Janakidas and many many more. However, in the 50s,there was one Comedian who proved to be the most popular and the Best Comedy actor. His name was Johnny Walker.

However, in my personal opinion, there was no comparison to the comedy of Kishore Kumar. He was not only a Film Comedian, but also a comedian in real life. Lata Mangeshkar is on record saying ” singing with Kishore da was very difficult. He used to make us laugh so much that I had to tell him sometimes to stop making me laugh, or else I can not sing.”

In real life his behaviour was many times very strange. Here are some anecdotes about his funny (?) behaviour. Kishore Kumar is said to have been paranoid about not being paid. During recordings, he would sing only after his secretary confirmed that the producer had made the payment. On one occasion, when he discovered that his dues had not been fully paid, he appeared on set with makeup on only one side of his face. When the director questioned him, he replied “Aadha paisa to aadha make-up.” (Half make-up for half payment.) On the sets of Bhai Bhai, Kumar refused to act because the director M. V. Raman owed him ₹ 5,000. Ashok Kumar persuaded him to do the scene but when the shooting started, Kishore walked a few paces and said, Paanch Hazaar Rupaiya (five thousand rupees) and did a somersault. After he reached the end of the floor, he left the studio. On another occasion, when producer R.C. Talwar did not pay his dues in spite of repeated reminders, Kumar arrived at Talwar’s residence shouting “Hey Talwar, de de mera aath hazaar” (“Hey Talwar, give me my eight thousand”) every morning until Talwar paid up.

Many journalists and writers have written about Kumar’s seemingly eccentric behaviour. He placed a sign that said “Beware of Kishore” at the door of his Warden Road flat. Once, producer-director H. S. Rawail, who owed him money, visited his flat to pay the dues. Kumar took the money and when Rawail offered to shake hands with him, reportedly Kishore put Rawail’s hand in his mouth, bit it and asked “Didn’t you see the sign?”. Rawail laughed off the incident and left quickly. According to another reported incident, once Kumar was due to record a song for producer-director G. P. Sippy. As Sippy approached his bungalow, he saw Kumar going out in his car. Sippy asked Kumar to stop his car but Kumar increased his speed. Sippy chased him to Madh Island where Kumar finally stopped his car near the ruined Madh Fort. When Sippy questioned his strange behaviour, Kumar refused to recognise or talk to him and threatened to call the police. The next morning, Kumar reported for the recording session. An angry Sippy questioned him about his behaviour the previous day but Kumar said that Sippy must have dreamt the incident and said that he was in Khandwa on the previous day.

Once, a producer went to court to get a decree that Kumar must follow the director’s orders. As a consequence, he obeyed the director to the letter. He refused to alight from his car until the director ordered him to do so. After filming a car scene in Bombay, Kumar drove until he reached Khandala because the director forgot to say “Cut”. In the 1960s, a financier named Kalidas Batvabbal, who was disgusted with Kumar’s alleged lack of cooperation during the shooting of Half Ticket, reported to the income tax authorities, who raided his house. Later, Kumar invited Batvabbal to his home, asked him to enter a cupboard for a chat and locked him inside. He unlocked Batvabbal after two hours and told him, “Don’t ever come to my house again”.

Whatever he was, like a million others, I used to like him and saw all his films till 1970. After that he became out of control. He was an excellent natural singer. He acted in 88 films and sang 2678 songs in all. He worked with 110 MDs. He produced 14 films(6 incomplete) and directed 12 films (4 incomplete). He sang with 85 Male singers and 74 Female singers. He sang 687 duets with Asha and 343 with Lata. Among MDs, he sang 563 songs for R.D.Burman.

Among the actors, he sang 245 songs for Rajesh Khanna (his dear friend), 202 for Jeetendra, 119 for Dev Anand and 131 for Amitabh bachhan. In the 1980’s he refused to sing for Amitabh due to his refusal to work in his film and after that (by coincidence) Amitabh’s career nosedived till he recovered with the TV show “Kaun Banega Karodpati”.

Finally, Kishore married 4 times and died on his brother Ashok Kumar’s Birthday. After that Ashok Kumar never celebrated his Birthday !

Today’s film had 2 actors doing important roles. One was I.Johar. This M.A.,LL.B. educated young man joined films as a story writer, but how he became a comedy actor is a comedy itself. Here it is….

It so happened that the shooting of ‘EK THI LADKI-1949 was in progress and as a writer, Johar was also present there. The scene was that the Heroine is chased in a river in a boat. Director Shorey asked Johar to sit in the boat following the heroine as the regular guy was absent. Johar was so nervous in his first brush with the shooting that while chasing he went past the Heroine’s boat. All the film crew burst into a laugh riot. A financier/distributor who was present there was so much impressed with the happening, that not only that scene was kept in the film, but also Johar’s role was enhanced to match the other comedian Majnu (real name Harold Lewis), in the film.

After the film EK THI LADKI became a major hit of 1949 with the iconic song “Lara lappa”, Roop Shorey featured the pair of Johar and Majnu in several films. They formed a comedy pair on the lines of ‘Bob Hope-Bing Crosby’ pair of Hollywood in the 50s. Johar-Majnu even did a ‘Yogi Dance’ In the film Hum sab chor hain-56, the way Bob Hope had done with a cane in hand etc.

In the 60s, Johar collaborated with Mehmood and did ‘Johar- Mehmood in….'(Goa, Kashmir, Hongkong, Bombay etc) exactly on the lines of ‘The road to…..’ series done by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.

The other actor was K.N.Singh. We all know him as a serious actor doing villain’s roles, but very few know that he started as a hero in the film “Bandit of the Air-1936”. After this flop film he never got a Hero’s role. In today’s film he did a Comedy role and also featured in a song sequence, lip syncing in Kishore’s voice.

Here is today’s comedy song, acted, sung and composed by Kishore Kumar. Enjoy….

Thanks for the post.Delighted to read about real life anecdotes in Kishore’s life. I never heard about any of them ealier, though I have read about some others not mentioned here.

I have seen ‘Badti ka naam”.

At that time I felt it fell much short of my expectations. Today I remember nothing except that song ‘” Oon kaun chu mane khabar nathi….: ( Sic )
