#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
YEAR 1983-1
Recently our team member Peevesie’s Mom jee had shared a song from the movie ‘Naukar Biwi Ka’, which is a movie from the year 1983.
We know that this year -1983-was a special year from the point of view of Indian cricket lovers. It was in this year that the unfancied Indian Cricket Team unexpectedly won the Cricket World Cup.
As far as movies were concerned, 1983 was the year of comeback of Rajesh Khanna.
On the personal front, it was a very important year for me as a Cricket fan as well as a student. 1983 was the most important year of my student life. I had appeared and successfully 😊 cleared my Board Exams of standard Xth.
Those days, we were staying at Paras (District Akola, Maharashtra) in a small colony named ‘Vidyut Nagar’ which was a residential colony for the employees of State Electricity Board. I had appeared for the Std Xth exams in March 1983 and the results were declared in June 1983.
After successfully passing the Board Exams, I got free career advice by many self styled career cousellors 😊 about my future studies. In those days students passing with good marks were supposed to take only Engineering or Medical courses. And those with lower marks were supposed to study Commerce and those with third grade marks were supposed to go for Arts.
Given my percentage of marks, I was advised to go for Engineering, at least Civil branch of engineering. This advice was given without perusing my marks in various subjects and without considering my aptitude. I on the other hand was more interested in playing cricket and watching movies. That way I followed the same routine during the summer of 1983 that I had followed during the summer vacations of the earlier years. I lacked the maturity to start thinking and planning about my career. The harsh realities of life were yet to make their presence felt in my life.
After passing the board exams I had taken admission in the 11th standard in the Vocational College at Akola. Our ancestral home was at Akola and my grandparents lived there. I would stay there on weekdays and visit my parents at Paras on weekends. Gradually I realized that the subjects I had chosen were not my cup of tea. But I continued my studies hoping to somehow clear the examinations. During those two years 1983-1985, I showed more interest on playing cricket and watching movies with friends. Among my friends there was an informal group of Rajesh Khanna fans. Under such circumstances, my studies were going nowhere. Moreover, I could not handle the newfound freedom that a 10th pass “grown up” boy like me got. I went overboard in watching movies without any restrictions. I would misuse my freedom to watch even movies that were age restricted for underage people like me. The theatre employees those days were not as strict as they are nowadays. That is how I watched this movie ‘Qayamat-1983, which was an adult only movie meant for adults. No matter how one defined an adult (an 18 year old or a 21 year old), I fell way short on either count.
‘Qayamat-1983’ was directed by Raj N Sippy for ‘Aftab Pictures, Bombay’. It was produced by Salim. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 01.10.1983. The cast of ‘Qayamat-1983’ has Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Smita Patil, Poonam Dhillon, Shakti Kapoor, Bindu, Bharat Kapoor, Tamanna, Ram Mohan, Narendra Nath, Satyen Kappu, Iftekhar, Gurbachan Singh, Pinchoo Kapoor, Sudhir Dalvi, S. Rajan, Moolchand, Madhu Malhotra, Ved Prakash, Pushpa Soni, Master Rajesh, Master Navsheel, Master Chetan, Azad, Pardesi, Raj Kaul, Aftab, Ranvir Raj, Shamsuddin, Sane and others. This movie has four songs composed by Rahul Dev Burman and penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. All the four songs has the voice of Asha Bhonsle in them. One out of these four songs was not included in the movie.
This movie also included the full song ‘kaanton se kheench ke ye aanchal… aaj phir jeene kee tamannaa hai’ from the movie ‘Guide-1965’. This ‘re-used’ song has already been posted on the blog.
I remember I enjoyed watching this movie for the role played by Dharmendra. His role has grey shades in it and his performance was well appreciated in this movie. The story of this movie revolves around the relationship between two friends which takes unfortunate turns because of misunderstanding. And the other plot of the story being taking revenge for being wronged.
Here is a summary of the plot of this movie, which I have taken from IMDB where a reader (name Rajoo?, from Hotmail) has posted it. I have added the name of the actors to their character name in the movie.
Shyam and Kamal are two school-going students who are close friends. When Kamal is unable to pay his exam fees, Shyam assists him, and as a result Kamal does well, is able to study further, becomes an IPS Officer (Shatrughan Sinha), and is subsequently hired as the Superintendent of Police in Delhi, while Shyam re-locates to live in Bombay. Years later, Shyam has taken to crime in a big way and is now known as Rajeshwar (Dharmendra). He kills a politician, S.M. Dayal (Gurbachan Singh), who had molested and killed, Geeta (Jayaprada), his betrothed, but the Police are unable to find evidence to arrest him. They request Kamal to intervene and arrest Rajeshwar, and as a result, Kamal, along with his wife, Shashi (Smita Patil), and sister, Sudha (Poonam Dhillon), re-locate to Bombay. Kamal finds out that Rajeshwar is none other than Shyam, but does eventually arrest him for abducting and sexually molesting Shama (Tamanna). Shyam believes that the charges against him are false and trusts Kamal fully. But the Court finds Shyam guilty, and sentences him to seven years in jail. Betrayed and upset with Kamal, an embittered and vengeful Shyam is discharged from prison after his sentence, determined to molest Sudha and make Kamal’s life a nightmare. (Plot ends here).
What happens in the end is what interested readers would like to watch in the movie so I am not disclosing it here as of now. This movie is based on the famous Hollywood thriller ‘Cape Fear-1962’.
The song being covered in this post is the first song in the movie. This is a dance song picturised on Jayshree T and Leena Das, while Dharmendra and Gurbachan are seated on opposite side of a log table, each carrying a pistol which they intend to use after the dance song ends. The picturisation also shows Ram Mohan and two other artistes whom I am unable to identify.
Both Jayshree T and Leena Das lip-sync in the voice of Asha Bhonsle. Apparently Pancham used mixing of two vocal tracks to simulate the effect of two different singers singing for the two dancers.
Here is this nice “showdown” song from “Qayamat”(1983).
