Main wohi wohi baat
Posted November 6, 2012
on:Today (6 november) is the 27th death anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar. When most of his contemporary actors were content to get typedcast in certain kinds of roles and would spend their entire career playing the same kinds of role, Sanjeev Kumar would play just about any kind of character that he was offered. While signing up movies, he did not worry about the impact of that role on his star value. To worry about one’s stardom was for lesser actors, not for Sanjeev Kumar , who could play roles that most heroes would summarily reject. Sanjeev Kumar played roles of deaf and dumb (Koshish), pimp (Manoranjan), Old man (in several movies), mad (Khilona) etc. His star value remained undiminished, no matter what kind of roles he played in his movies.
“Naya Din Nayi Raat” (1974) was unprecedented in this respect. Sanjeev Kumar played not one or two or three, but as many as nine roles in this movie ! This had got to be some sort of a world record for sure.
On the occasion of Sanjeev Kumar’s death anniversary today, here is the title song from ” Naya Din Nayi Raat” (1974). The song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala, and later by Khyati Bhatt too. So this is a hint to me that I better discuss this song today without any further delay. 🙂

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)
Main wohi
wohi baat
main wohi
wohi baat
mere liye to har din
naya din
har raat
nayi raat
main wohi
wohi baat
main wohi
wohi baat
mere liye to har din
naya din
har raat
nayi raat
main wohi
wohi baat
main wohi
achchi ya kharaab
pee li
jaisi mili
sharaab
pee li
saaqi naya hai
jaam puraana
saaqi naya hai
jaam puraana
rang naya hai
naam puraana
naam puraana
subah ho ya shaam
mujhe masti se kaam
kyunki har din
naya din
har raat
nayi raat
main wohi
wohi baat
main wohi
u u u u u
ru ru ru ru ru
apna hi lahoo
pi raha hoon
marne ke liye
jee raha hoon
dil apna hai
gham apne hain
dil apna hai
gham apne hain
duniya paraayee
ham apne hain
ham apne hain
mujhe aaye na karaar
main rahoon bekaraar
kyunki har din
naya din
har raat
nayi raat
main wohi
wohi baat
main wohi
wohi baat
mere liye to har din
naya din
har raat
nayi raat
main wohi
wohi baat
main wohi
aap apna jawaab
ho gaya hoon
manzil pe aake
kho gaya hoon

Atul ji,
No doubt,Sanjeev Kumar was a great actot than a star.He is my favourite.
However doing 9 roles in a film was not an original idea, nor was it First time.It was actually the 3rd instance.
SIVAJI GANESHAN did 9 roles in the Tamil film ‘ navarathiri ‘-1964,
depicting the 9 different emotions of a person.
Then Telugu actor AKKINENI NAGESHWAR RAO did 9 roles in the
Telugu film ‘ NAVARATHRI ‘ in 1966.
Taking inspiration from these two,Sanjeev Kumar did 9 roles in Hindi film
NAYA DIN NAYI RAAT in as late as 1974.

Here is some additional info on actors doing multiple roles in films.
The maximum roles,so far have been done by actor VIKRAM in his Tamil film ” RAJAPATTAI”,numbering a whopping 17 roles.
The next best is Hindi film by Priyanka Chopra,”What’s your Raashi?”,with 12 roles.
The third best is Kamal Hasan, with 10 roles in Tamil film
“DASHAVATARAM”.
Amitabh Bachhan with 4 roles in Lawaaris song,Hritik Roshan in Dhoom-2 (5 roles),and Rajanikant in Oru koodai Sunlight, with 7 looks are also in the league.

In Sangharsh he stood upto Dilip Kumar. Sanjeev ne Dilip ki chhutti kar di thhi. It was cakewalk/walk in the park for him in the films as he had good grooming from the Theatres(drama-natak). He was confidence personified. Even his song picturisation was very neat and clean. No clumsy or sloppy action here.
Alas he could not manage his success; booze cooked his gander, otherwise he would have been still around maybe as husband of Hema or Sulakshna Pandit with kids. RIP

Again in the film VIDHAATA Sanjeev Kumar had powerful roles against Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor was another co -star in this film. Other than the famous and popular films in the later years there were ‘ Be-rahem’ and ‘Bad aur Badnaam’ which we specially watch that time because of Sanjeev Kumar’s performance.

Easily one of the finest actors ever. One of my favourites too – with the very rare exception, I could see almost every movie for just Sanjeev alone.
27 years since he passed away!!! Feels like it was just the other day that I got shocked by the news.
Am glad we have this blog to pay tribute to him. In fact, it’s a good thing that all those yesteryear artistes are remembered here.
Thanks to Avinash Scrapwalaji for providing the lyrics.

Thank you very much Raja ji. It s my pleasure. And it is our love and affection , other than duty, to remember those artistes who have contributed for the development of our culture, our films, and over the years they become part of our life. Fortunately we have had so many great artistes with us.
