Hullo to all in Atuldom
Saw a portion of “Padikkadhavan” (Tamil 1985), a few days back. The portion had Sivaji Ganesan (Rajasekhar), the presiding judge for a case, realising that the accused Raja (Rajnikanth) & Ramu (Vijay Babu) are his long-lost brothers. He then proceeds to feign a heart attack & adjourns the court. After researching all night, he returns as a defence lawyer to save Raja and successfully proves that Chakravarthy (Jaishankar) is the one who murdered his own brother. A fight ensues between Chakravarthy and Raja, where Raja defeats Chakravarthy. In the end, Radha (Rajasekhar’s wife) apologises for her old attitude with Raja and Ramu.
There is a scene in the portion that I have related above, where Rajasekhar goes to meet Raja in the lock-up. He asks Raja “you know who I am? Do you know how much I have been searching for the two of you? I didn’t know where the two of were but you knew where to find me? After all these years, is this how I come across the two of you?” This transliteration into English steals the emotional effect of the dialogue; it gathered claps from the audiences when Sivaji Ganesan uttered it in Tamil & before him Sanjeev Kumar mouthed it in the Hindi original.
In reply to the questions, Raja (Rajnikanth) in Tamil & Govind a.k.a Chotu Ustaad (Amitabh Bachchan) in Hindi, shed a drop of tear. The dialogue & the reactions just enhanced the scene, raised the emotional quotient. This is the scene which I love to mention every time I write about Sanjeev Kumar, how versatile he was, how he communicated emotions with his eyes etc. In my personal opinion, his versatility was showcased best in ‘Naya Din Nayi Raat’ (1974) which was a remake of the Sivaji Ganesan starrer, Tamil film ‘Navarathri’ (1964). That film had Sanjeev Kumar play nine characters each corresponding to the ‘Navarasas’.
In the Indian performing arts, a rasa is a sentiment or emotion evoked in each member of the audience by the art. The Navarasas are Hasya (laughter), Sringaar (romance), Raudram (fury), Karunyam (compassion), Bibhatsam (disgust), Bhayanakam (horror), Viram (heroism), Adbhutam (wonder) & Santam (peace).
There is some give-and-take (for want of a better expression) between Sivaji Ganesan & Sanjeev Kumar-
(a) ‘Devata’ (1978) was a remake of the 1972 Sivaji starrer ‘Gnana Oli’ (meaning light of wisdom).
(b) ‘Engirundho Vandhaal’ with Sivaji Ganesan in the lead was simultanously made in Hindi as ‘Khilona’ with Sanjeev Kumar playing the same character.
(c) I have allreaady spoken about Sanjeev Kumar reprising Sivaji Ganesan from ‘Navarathri’ to ‘Naya Din Nayi Raat’.
(d) I would also like to mention that Sanjeev Kumar had a friendly appearance in the Tamil film ‘Bharatha Vilasa’ along with the Telugu actor A. Nageshwara Rao & Madhu Nair of Malayalam.
No prizes for guessing why I am writing about Sanjeev Kumar films.
9th July is the birth anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar. He was born as Harihar Jethalal Jariwala (also referred to as Haribhai) Gujarati family, that dealt in zari (brocade). He came to Bombay when he was very young. He would have turned 88.
Since I spoke in detail about “Padikkadhavan” let us have a song from it’s Hindi version “Khuddar” which released 30th July 1982 i.e. almost 44 years this month. It was produced by Anwar Ali (Mehmood’s brother) and directed by Ravi Tandon. The music was by Rajesh Roshan and Majrooh Sultanpuri was the lyricist. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar were used for all the songs with Amit Kumar singing the solo version of the song in today’s song. Kadar Khan has been credited for the story, screenplay & dialogue.
Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Mehra, Tanuja, Parveen Babi, Bindiya Goswami, Prem Chopra, Mehmood (in a guest appearance), A.K. Hangal, Ramesh Deo, Pinchoo Kapoor, Madhu Malini, Kalpana Iyer, Ali Masood (one of actor Mehmood’s many sons) were in the cast with Master Raju, Master Ravi, playing the young age of the characters of Amitabh Bachchan & Vinod Mehra, Baby Pinky played the young Madhu Malini.
The song ‘Oonche Neeche Raaste’ had two versions. One played at the start of the film with the much-older brother Sanjeev Kumar escorting his brothers to school. The second version is at the wedding of Vinod Mehra to Bindiya Goswami where Sanjeev Kumar has been given the position of guest of honour.

——————-Duet version (Kishore Kumar-Lata Mangeshkar)
——————-
hmmm hmm
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
raah mein raahee ruk naa jaanaa
ho kar ke majboor
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
oonche neeche raaste aur manzil teree door
raah mein raahee ruk naa jaanaa
ho kar ke majboor
ho
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
ye hamaaree zindagee
ek lambaa safar hee to hai
chalte hain jis pe ham
anajaanee dagar hww to hai
dekh sambhalnaa
bach ke nikalnaa
jo naheen chalte dekh ke aage
vo karte hain bhool
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
raah mein raahee ruk naa jaanaa
ho kar ke majboor
ho
oonche neeche raaste aur manzil teree door
karoon kyaa main pyaare bhaai
thhak jaayen agar mere paanv
dam le ke do ghadee
chalaa chal ban miley chaahe gaanv
jo koi soya
usne hee khoya
baat hamaaree yaad hamesha rakhnaa tu zaroor
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
raah mein raahee ruk naa jaanaa
ho kar ke majboor
ho oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
tujhe pyaar bhee miley
pathh mein to samajhnaa yahee
ye hai raaste kee chhaanv
saathee teree manzil naheen
teraa to apnaa
aur hai sapnaa
apne hee sapnon kee manzil pe
naa rah jaanaa tu
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
raah mein raahee ruk naa jaanaa
ho kar ke majboor
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
(o ho o o o o)
oonche neeche raaste aur manzil teree door
(aa aa aa aa aa)
————————–
Amit Kumar solo version
————————–
mubaarak ho tujhko
nayee manzil naya humsafar
bahaaron kee ye chhaanv
pattharon ka suhaana nagar
aaj yahee dil
jhoom ke gaaye
rahe humesha jeevan tera
khushiyon se bharpoor
ho
oonche neeche raaste
aur manzil teree door
raah mein raahee ruk na jaanaa
ho kar ke majboor
ho
oonche neeche raaste aur manzil teree door
