‘Ghar Aakhir Ghar Hai’ (1988) was produced by Rajendra Mahalwal and directed by Pawan Kumar. The cast included Javed Khan, Neelam Mehra, Ramesh Deo, Seema Deo, Agha, Padma Khanna, Rajesh Bahl, Yunus Parvez. Rajesh Puri, Shweta, Sudhir Dalvi, Kamal Kapoor, Urmila Bhatt, Polson, Mamta, Ismail Khan, Bhagwan etc.
Bhopal born, FTTI graduate, Javed Khan in this film is a different actor than Mumbai born stage actor, Javed Khan who has been known for his roles in ‘Andaaz Apna Apna’ and ‘Lagaan’ apart from TV serial, ‘Nukkad’ (1986). Both were active in 1980s and 1990s in films as well as in TV serials. So, they are the recent case of the ‘same name confusion’.
‘Ghar Aakhir Ghar Hai’ (1988) is about a joint family of four brothers with three married brothers and one, a prospective groom. The family has been living in a happy and conducive atmosphere. However, some disagreements among the family members start developing, especially after the retirement of the elder brother. The house gets divided between brothers. Over a period of time, the family members come to the conclusion that despite some disagreements and minor rifts, an undivided home is a place for solace. The story of the film in some details is as under:
Ram (Ramesh Deo) is the head of a joint family consisting of his wife (Seema Deo), three brothers – Laxman (Rajesh Bahl) and his wife, Padma (Padma Khanna) and their teenage daughter, Nagina (Mamta), Bharat (Rajesh Puri) and his wife, Manjula (Shweta) and Anand (Javed Khan) who is in the final year of his graduation. In the household, Bansi Kaka (Agha) is a cook but he is well respected by the family members because he is the eldest among them. The family members take breakfast and dinner together and also join in every evening singing devotional songs. The brothers and sisters-in-law have excellent relationships and they cooperate with each other in work. The family atmosphere in the household has been excellent.
The family relationship takes a dramatic turn when Ram retires from his job and gets his provident fund. Ram wants to utilize a part of the money from his provident fund for the marriage of his youngest brother, Anand who is in his final year of graduation. However, Padma wants part of the money to be utilized for her daughter’s marriage. This difference leads to some more minor arguments in the family on a daily basis.
In college, Anand is in love with Kavita (Neelam Mehra). Both like each other to the extent that they want to get married. Kavita’s mother (Urmila Bhatt) after some reservations agrees to the marriage proposal. Padma and Manjula are pressuring Ram to agree for their respective sister as bride for Anand. Ram wriggles out of the argument by saying that let Anand decide with whom he wants to marry.
Anand reveals to the family that he has decided to marry his collegemate, Kavita. On this issue, there is further discord between Ram and his brothers. But Ram decides to go ahead with Anand’s choice. Both his brothers, Laxman and Bharat express their inability to financially help him in the marriage. The marriage of Anand and Kavita takes place. After the marriage, Kavita is often the subject of sarcastic comments by Padma and Manjula. The relationships between Ram and his brothers deteriorate to such an extent that Laxman and Bharat demand division of the house to stay independently of each other. Ram reluctantly agrees for the division against the wishes of his wife to bring happiness to his brothers.
With the shock from the division of the house, the health of Ram’s wife deteriorates to such an extent that the doctor suggests urgent surgery which will cost around Rs.5000/-. Ram is almost penniless. Laxman and Bharat express their inability to help him financially. Anand pledges his wife’s jewelry and raises the money to finance the surgery of his ister-in-law. The news of the serious health problems of Ram’s wife as well as rescuing Nagina from a sham relationship with her boyfriend by Anand make Laxaman and Bharat to give moral support to Ram. Laxman is grateful to Anand who helps Nagina in convincing her boyfriend’s father to get them married. All these factors make the brothers realise the importance of the comradeship between brothers. The family members once again are back to their undivided house. The film ends with entire family members joining their daily evening bhajans as hitherto.
The film had five songs written by B S Mahalwal (4) and Naqsh Lyallpuri (1) which were set to music by Roshan Lal ( not to be confused with the music director, Roshan). The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘koi belee na saathhee’. The song is written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and is rendered by Mohammed Rafi. The song is picturised on Sudhir Dalvi. It is said that the song was recorded by Mohammed Rafi sometime in the 1960s for a film which was shelved.
The context of the song is that Ram (Ramesh Deo) is emotionally drained after division of the house among the brothers which he never expected. He is also financially drained and his wife is seriously ill requiring money for the urgent surgery. Under such strains, Ram is walking aimlessly when he hears a blind sadhu (Sudhir Dalvi) singing a song indirectly expressing Ram’s despairing thoughts that he has no ‘belee’ (protector) and no ‘saathhee’ (friends). Anand (Javed Khan) who has sold wife’s jewelry to raise money for the surgery is desperately searching for Ram to hand over the money. Bansi (Agha), who is alone in the house, is also a worried man.
