‘Kabhee Dhoop Kabhee Chhaaon’ (1971) was produced and directed by Chandrakant under the banner of Joy Films. The cast included Dara Singh, Ameeta, Geetanjali, Jagdeep, Sapru, Randhawa, Ramayan Tiwari, Ram Mohan, Renu, Mridula Rani, Bhagwan Sinha, Bhagwan, Mopet Raja, Tiger Joginder Singh, Sulochana, B M Vyas etc. In the film, Dara Singh is paired with Geethanjali (South) while Jagdeep is paired with Ameeta.
The film was one of Dara’s Singh’s usual ‘B’ grade films with a couple of long wrestling bouts and fights mixed with usual stories of ‘lost and found’ and conspiracy to inherit the wealth after the death of the businessman-husband by a childless wife. The story of the film is as under:
The film opens with Meena (Geethanjali), a swimming champion, brushing her scooter against Balbir Singh (Dara Singh) while driving. Neither she is apologetic nor does Balbir complain about it. She drives back to her house. Her father, Advocate Gupta (B M Vyas) directs her to see her photo which has appeared in a newspaper. Meena scrolls through newspaper and finds her photo having won the swimming championship. But alongside, she also sees Balbir Singh’s photo having won the wrestling championship with a headline, ‘The Man of Steel’. She is amused. Both are curious to know about each other. Balbir invites Meena to watch his forthcoming wrestling championship bout which she accepts. There is another girl, Sonia (Renu) who is trying to become friendly with Balbir to influence the results of his next wrestling bouts on the advice of her boss who is involved in betting.
Seth Mangaldas (Sapru) and his wife (Mridula Rani) have adopted Ramesh (Jagdeep) as they are childless. While Seth Mangaldas treats him like his son, his wife hates him for a different reason. Her apprehension is that he will inherit all the wealth after the death of Seth Mangaldas. She wants that Rekha (Ameeta), her niece who has come to stay with her for completion of her graduation, should inherit the wealth. Seth Managaldas’ nephew, Vinod (Ram Mohan) is in the business of organising wrestling bouts.
The story goes in the flashback mode. Few years back, Ganga (Sulochana) and her husband (Bhagwan) along their son, Tara were traveling in a train to a city for admitting the son in a high school. However, the train derailed and fell in a river. Ganga was hospitalised for head injuries when she was informed that her husband was no more. Tara was swept away in the river who was rescued and brought up by a catholic priest after which he was adopted by Seth Mangaldas. Ganga’s younger brother, Balbir Singh had come to Mumbai in search of his sister and nephew Tara but so far he has not been successful. In the meantime, he has turned a professional wrestler.
Coincidentally, after many years, Ganga is employed by Mrs. Mangaldas as a maid where her own son, Tara, now known as Ramesh, lives in a comfortable life and Rekha has joined the family. Ganga recognises Ramesh as her son, Tara because of a school medal which he had got from his school in the village. But she decides not to reveal herself for the sake of his wellbeing.
At the swimming pool where Balbir is relaxing, Sonia (Renu) meets her friend, Meena and invites her to party, and request her to perform a cabaret dance and bring Balbir also. After the party, Sonia tries to seduce Balbir but he spurns her.
On the day of the wrestling championship final between Balbir Singh and Bhima Rao (Randhawa), Sonia tries to mislead Balbir by saying that Meena is in some trouble in a forest. She takes him to forest with the intention of keeping him captive so that Bhima Rao wins the championship by default. However, after reaching the forest, Balbir Singh successfully fights with the goons employed by Sonia and ties her to a tree. He reaches in time to participate in the wrestling bouts and defeats Bhima Rao to win the Championship.
To celebrate the victory, Rekha along with Ramesh, Vinod and Balbir Singh go for a picnic in a tribal hamlet of a nearby forest. After the picnic, Rekha becomes close to Ramesh, which is not liked by her aunt, Mrs. Mangaldas because she has a planned to make Rekha inherit her husband’s wealth and wishes to get her married to Vinod, the nephew of her husband. Vinod is happy but he also knows that so long as Ramesh is present in the house, it will be difficult to get consent from Seth Mangaldas who loves Ramesh. So, Vinod plans a conspiracy with her aunt and charges Ramesh for siphoning of jewellery from the locker of the house. Even though Seth Mangaldas knows that his nephew, Vinod is the real culprit through the finger prints police has got on the locker, Ramesh leaves the house for playing dirty with him by other members of the family. Ganga is in a piquant situation as she cannot do anything for Ramesh who is her son, Tara.
Vinod, having known that he has been identified as a culprit of the so-called locker theft, decides to eliminate both his uncle, Seth Mangaldas and Ramesh, his rival claimant to Rekha with a single conspiracy. An anonymous phone call to Seth Mangaldas takes him to a hotel room to save Ramesh who is supposed to be under some trouble. On the other hand, Vinod convinces Balbir Singh that Ramesh/Tara is in trouble from Seth Mangaldas who has gone to the hotel room to kill Ramesh. Both Balbir and Seth Mangaldas meet in the same hotel room. In scuffle, Seth Mangaldas gets hit by the bullet of his own gun and falls down. Balbir escapes from the room thinking that Seth Mangaldas is dead. After some time, Ramesh returns to his hotel room and finds Seth Mangaldas lying in a pool of blood. By that time, the police team arrive and arrest Ramesh on charge of attempted murder of Seth Mangaldas.
In the court, Balbir Singh reveals that Ramesh is innocent as it was he who fought with Seth Mangaldas during which he accidentally got hit by the bullet from his own gun. He further reveals that it was the conspiracy of Vinod and the police has the proof of his hand impression on the locker. However, for the sake of the family’s prestige, Seth Mangaldas had withdrawn the FIR on the locker theft as Vinod is his nephew.
The film ends with Seth Mangaldas, after discharge from the hospital, revealing to the court the real happenings. The court sets free Ramesh and Balbir Singh and orders arrest of Vinod. Balbir Singh unites with his elder sister, Ganga and Tara/Ramesh now knows that the maid servant in his house was none other than his mother. The pairs of Balbir Singh-Meena and Ramesh-Rekha also unite.
The film had eight songs, including one double version song, written by Prem Dhawan (5) and Kavi Pradeep (3) which were set to music by Chitragupt. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘main bhee jaloon tu bhee jale’ rendered by Usha Iyer (Uthup) who sings for the dancer, Geethanjali (South). This was the first Hindi song in a Hindi film for Usha Iyer as a playback singer. Earlier she has rendered two English songs in ‘Bombay Talkies’ (1970) – one as singer-actor and the other as a background singer.
The context of the song is that Sonia (Renu) has invited Meena (Geethanjali) for her party in which she insists that she should come with Balbir Singh (Dara Singh) and should perform cabaret dance in the party. Sonia works for a wrestling bouts’ betting syndicate and her intention is to influence Balbir Singh for the forthcoming wrestling bout outcome to the liking of the betting syndicate. However, Balbir Singh does not like Meena dancing with minimum costumes and walks out while Bhim Rao (Randhawa), his opponent in the next wrestling bout, enjoys her dance. So, Sonia’s attempt to woo Balbir Singh fails.
Geethanjali (04/11/1947 – 31/10/2019) whose real name was Mani, was born in Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh). She had three sisters and one brother. From the childhood, all the sisters had interest in dancing and used to perform in family functions. Later, they also gave the public dance performance which paved the way to get her into Telugu and Tamil films as a dancer. ‘Sita Kalyanam’ (1961), the Teleugu film was her first film with a major role which was directed by debutant N T Ramarao.
Geethanjali got her first major Hindi film ‘Parasmani’ (1963) in which she was paired with Mahipal in the lead role. In this film, she was given a screen name, Geethanjali because her real name Mani was already in the film’s title. After the tremendous success of the film, she retained her screen name in her all-subsequent films. She has also worked in ‘Sangraam’ (1965), ‘Do Kaliyaan’ (1968), ‘Balram Krishna’ (1968) and ‘Tulsi Vivah’ (1971).
During the peak of her film career, she got married to fellow actor Ramakrishna in August 1974 after working with him in a few films. After marriage, Geethanjali took a long break from films and returned as a character actors doing all sorts of roles as sister, vamp, dancer, comedian etc. In a career spanning close to six decades, Geethanjali worked in around 300 films in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi. In her later life, she was associated with N T Ramarao’s Telugu Desham Party. Geethanjali passed away on October 31, 2019 at the age of 72 due to a cardiac arrest.
