Today’s song is from a C grade stunt film, Lutaru Lalana-1938.

1938 was the first decade of the Talkie films, which started in India in 1931 only. What an era it was ! I feel sad that the present generation (Zen G) can never ever even imagine the pleasure of seeing those films, which regaled the common man no end. I am talking about the C grade stunt/action/costume drama films made then. Those were the days when people went to the theatre with no preconceived notions, because they only went to see good stunts, dances and killing dialogues.

This was a class of lower middle class, working people and young children in their teens, who got entertainment at affordable ticket rates – no matter if the theatre was even 5 to 6 kms away to reach. Walking to get the desired timepass was no problem. No one from the audience expected a sane, reasonable story, no one was even bothered about the histrionic capabilities of the actors or the actresses.

There were fixed production houses, a fixed set of actors and a fixed set of audiences in every town who waited for such new films. Repeating the films was a matter of showing their love for such films. Studios like Vishwakala Movietone, Wadia movietone, Mohan pictures, Ranjit Movietone, Bhavnani productions, Indian liberty, Navin pictures, eminent and respected production houses like Imperial, Prakash pictures, Indra movietone etc also started with stunt movies, but later on turned to social or mythological films.

In the advertisements of such films, the name of the production studio was prominent. Director, composer and the star cast were not given prominence till Fearless Nadia came to the scene. In the 1940s, Master Bhagwan was also a prominent name.As far as the music was concerned, no one bothered about the tunes or the quality of the singers. For them dancers and the fighters were of more importance.

The audience was also typical. Many members in the audience took pleasure in advising the stars on the screen, for example – ” maar saale ko”, ” oye, aati kya mere saath “, ” arey bhaag jaa, villain aa raha hai” etc.etc. Few vulgar comments were also heard sometimes. The rest of the audience clapped enthusiastically. when the hero won the fight. Such encouraging , helping and motivating advice had no effect on the stars on the screen, but they echoed what most of the audience wanted to say.

In addition to human actors, most stunt films used to have veterinary actors like Horse, Tiger, Lions, Dogs and even Elephants to help the Hero and Heroines. Later on even old motor cars, Jeeps and Motorcycles were also used for stunts. It gave joy to the audience to see Horses running faster with heroines or heros and other loyal animals like Dogs etc saving their lives and then pushing the villains in the gutter of over a cliff to die !

I was lucky to see most of this, in the late 40’s and early 50’s, when such old films came to the theatres at half rates, as a Morning show at 11 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Many times Saturday half day school was bunked to see such films.

The theatres showing these films were also fixed and they bothered the least about the pleasures of the audience in getting comfortable seats. usually such theatres were in some nook and corners of the city and were necessarily with torn seats and missing handrests or other comforts.

Films of master Vithal, Shankar Vazre, Fearless Nadia, Navin Yagnik and Master Bhagwan etc were popular. usually, all film stories were of same pattern, without much difference. Only the stunts made the difference.

In the period 1935 to 1955, fearless Nadia films were very popular. Today’s film ” Lutaru Lalna”-1938 was a successful film. The cast consisted of Nadia, Sardar Mansoor, Atish Sayani,Sarira, Master Mohd,Boman Shroff etc etc. Wadia Movietone had the best set of C grade stunt//action film artists in the industry. The music was by Master muhammad. It was directed by one of the owner- brothers- Homi Wadia.

The story of the film was……

Princess Indira ( Nadiya) of Ramnagar is sent abroad for education. When she comes back, she finds her father dead and her prime Minister Durjan Singh (Sayani) managing the kingdom on her behalf. His younger brother Randhir (Boman Shroff) is her childhood playmate and they still have delicate feelings for each other. Randhir is the Army chief. Indira is happy that the things are managed by Durjan singh and spends her time enjoying life.

In her kingdom, there is a saint Saibaba (Sardar Mansoor) who works for the poor with the help of his daughter Vimala ( Sarita). One day Vimla and some of her workers come to the palace and complain to her that Durjan Singh is perpetrating lot of unjustified torture on the poor labourers and farmers. His men torment them and take away their produce without payment etc etc. While these complaints are made to Indira, Durjan comes there and throws all people away scolding them for telling lies to the Princess. Seeing this, Randhir is hurt and decides to leave the job of Commander of Army and devote his services for the poor, along with Saibaba. he goes away.

That night Indira is disturbed and decides to find out the truth. Soon she comes to know that Durjan and his chief right Hand Teesmaar Khan (Sayani) really torture the poor, loot their money and make merry. Indira decides to correct the situation by becoming LUTARU LALNA in disguise, and teach a lesson to Durjan and Tismarkhan.

She dons a mask, rides the horse ” Punjab ka Beta” owned by one Mithoo Miyan and moves among the poor people helping them and punishing and fighting with Durjan’s evil men. She makes friends with Bhanoo and Nanoo, brothers, who own a car called ” Rolls Royce ki Beti” and use that car for chasing the crooks. Soon she becomes famous among the people and Durjan is after her to capture her. Finally she arrests Durjan and Teesmaar Khan, ties them and drags them behind the car so that people know that Justice has been done.

Durjan and Teesmaar Khan are put behind bars. Randhir comes back and Indira and Randhir marry.

Usually in almost all films of Nadia, the stories were on these lines. People didn’t care. They were eager to see her stunts and she gave them these in an eyeful too. Some of the stunts she did were so dangerous that one may think that they were trick scenes, but in reality Nadia was called Fearless not for nothing. These were done by herself. here are two short notes on the cast members…

Sayani Aatish – his real name was Sayani Abdul Hamid Ahmed. He was born in Bombay. He had an ancestral Timber business, but his intense desire to work in films brought him to this profession in 1925. He started working in Silent stunt films as a villain.By the time Talkie films came, he had perfected his style. He joined Wadia Movietone. His first Talkie film was “Laal-E-Yaman”-33. After this he did 18 films. His last film was Mere Sajan-41. He was considered an outstanding villain of films. He was a writer and composer too.

Boman Shroff was born in Kalyan-Bombay. He joined films in 1922. After doing many silent films, he joined Wadia Movietone. His first Talkie film was “Laal E Yaman-33”. He was known as a DareDevil stuntman and master of make up.His role was usually of a comedian. His best performance was in Toofani Tarzan-37. He worked in 17 films. His last film as an actor was Stunt King-44. Boman Shroff also directed two films. One was the film Toofani Tirandaz-47 and the other was Sher Dil-54.

Nadia has a special place in my memories. Sometime in 1972, one of my friends, Mahesh Sharma, who lived in Colaba, Bombay, told me that he frequently sees Nadia in a Garden where he went for his morning walks. She lived near his apartments. Anxious to meet her and talk to her, I stayed with Sharma ji overnight. Next day morning, we both went to that garden. Sure enough, after some time Nadia entered the garden with two of her dogs. She sat on a bench and her servant took the dogs for their walks. Mahesh had a casual acquaintance with her. He greeted her and said ” this is my friend Mr. Deshmukh. He is your great fan “. I greeted her and recited names of her 10-15 films which I had seen. She looked suitably impressed . She smiled and we talked for a few minutes and left. Alas ! In those days, there was no Mobile phone, otherwise I would have had my photos with her as a prize possession. Anyway, I will never forget my meeting with her- the great Stunt Queen, The Fearless Nadia !

Here is a song from today’s film, sung by Sarita. Try to enjoy it…..
