‘Ek Din Kaa Baadshah’ (1964) was produced and directed by Jugal Kishore. The cast included Jairaj, Nishi, Daljeet, Jugal Kishore, Sundar, Mohan Choti, Kumud Tripathi, Madhumati, Naazi, Majnu, Chandrima Bhaduri, Sulochana Chatterjee, Sheela Desai, Kathana etc.
There was a similar sounding film, ‘Ek Din Kaa Sultan’ (1945). The story of the film was based on an minor historical event. Mughal Emperor, Humayun made a Bhishti (Water-career), the king for one day in token of his gratitude for saving him from drowning in River Ganga while crossing the river to retreat from the advancing army of Sher Shah Suri.
‘Ek Din Kaa Baadshah’ (1945) has a fantasy story. A vagabond trying to become a responsible son to his mother, decides to start trading business. In a market place, he meets a person who, in reality, is the king of his state in disguise. The vagabond criticizes the rule of the current king as the criminals are roaming free. He makes the vagabond the king for one day to understand that it is not an easy job for a king to run his kingdom. In this process, the common love interest of the king and the vagabond develop on a princess. But instead of the clashes between the two, the vagabond sacrifices his love interest for the king when he comes to know that the princess loves the king and not him.
The story of the film in detail is as under:
Yusuf (Jugal Kishore), son of a businessman has become vagabond after the death of his father. He spends most of his time with his close friends in a gambling den and drinking and is in love with dancer, Shabnam (Naazi) in the gambling den. One day, while the procession of Shahzadi (Nishi) was passing through the path, Yusuf breaks the protocol and sees her by sliding the curtains of her palanquin. The security personnels move to catch him but he fights with them and manages to escape.
Yusuf returns home in a drunken state and additionally his mother (Sulochana Chatterjee) gets worried as the security staff is after him for breaking the protocol by seeing Shahzadi out of her veil. Fed-up with his behaviour, his mother decides to end her life. Yusuf takes a final vow that he would give up drinking and gambling and explore the business of his late father to earn income from his own efforts rather than relying on his inherited income.
Shahzadi has been staying with Malika-e-Alam (Chandrima Bhaduri) as her guest and she wants her son, King Parvez (Jairaj) to marry her. But Parvez reminds her that he has taken a vow that until he finds out his father’s whereabout and if he is dead, until he punishes the killer of his father, he will not marry. Shahzadi hears their conversations but Malika-e-Alam assures her that while Yusuf will be punished for breaking the protocol, Parvez will marry her when the time is opportune. Shahzadi says that she will wait for King Parvez.One day, King Parvez, while going out incognito, finds Shahzadi who is in her common attire. Assuming to be a commner, Parvez tries to tell something to her but she spurns his advances as she has not recognised him. Even King Parvez has not recognised her as Shahzadi as he has never seen her face being in veil in the palace. Ever since he has seen Shahzadi as a commoner, King Parvez has fallen in love with her. He meets her incognito but she does not give her response as her eyes are set on King Parvez.
On the other side, Yusuf’s friends are wondering as to what happened to him as he has not met them for a long period. One day Yusuf visits the gambling den to meet his friends and tests their willingness to help him financially in case of need. All of them show their inability to help him. He turns to Shabnam for help but he is not even allowed to meet her. It dawns to Yusuf that his friends and Shabnam are fair weather friends and ungrateful. He decides to pursue his father’s business.
One day, while visiting the market place to look for some business opportunity, Yusuf meets a person assuming him to be a fellow businessman. They become friends and Yusuf invites the person to his house for a lunch where they can discuss business. The fact is that the person is none other than the king of his state who has a habit of roaming incognito to get the pulse of the people. In their conversations, Yusuf criticises the king for his inapt handling of criminal activities in the state. King Parvez decides to make him the king for one day without his knowledge. He serves Yusuf a drink which makes him unconscious. With the help of King’s security guards, Yusuf is shifted to King’s palace.
Next morning, Yusuf wakes up in the atmosphere of royalty. All the royal staff has been instructed to treat Yusuf as a king for one day. After some initial confusion, Yusuf starts performing his duties as a king in which he pronounces punishment for two days of prison to his close friends for being ungrateful. During this period, Yusuf meets Shahzadi and falls in love with her while Shahzadi assuming to be King Parvez also happy that at last he is showing interest in her.
As the time of Yusuf as a king for one day is about to end, King Parvez, through Shahzadi, gives him a drink which makes him come to his normal sense. However, Yusuf finds it difficult to believe that he is no longer the king, In the event, he creates problems for royal staff. Shahzadi also spurns him when she comes to know that he is not the king. With so much chaos created, as a preventive measure, Yusuf is arrested and put behind the bar. However, he escapes from the prison and returns home.
One day in the market, he accidentally meets King Parvez in disguise and takes him to his house. Actually, Yusuf wanted to confront him for serving him the drink which created an illusion for him. But when King Parvez introduces himself as such with reasons, Yusuf is pleasantly surprised. King Parvez asked Yusuf to be present in his palace on the next day when he will be appointed as his Security Chief.
At this stage, the story turns into the usual ‘B’ grade stunt/action films. King Parvez’s father has been kidnapped by his own Vazir to force him to reveal the location of the secret treasure. He is also plotting to kill King Parvez to make his son (Daljeet) the king. Yusuf gets to know the plotting of Vazir and the location where King Parvez’s father has been held captive. King Pervez orders Yusuf to proceed to the location with the army to get his father released.
After a long-drawn sword fights with Vazir’s guards, Yusuf gets King Parvez’s father released. King Parvez is extremely happy to meet his father after a long time. He asks Yusuf to ask anything he wants and he will grant without any hesitation. Yusuf asks for Shahzadi’s hand for his marriage. King Parvez grants his wish despite the fact that after the release of his father, he was to marry her. But Malika-e-Alam is not happy as she has promised Shahzadi that King Parvez will marry her after his father is released. Also, King Parvez is in love with Shahzadi when he comes to know that the girl he loved as a commoner was none other than Shahzadi.
Heated arguments takes place between Malika-e-Alam and King Parvez, which Yusuf overhears. He decides to retreat from his wish but King Parvez does not allow and orders him to get ready for his Nikkah with Shahzadi on the next day. Yusuf agrees on one condition that he be made the king for the day when his Nikkah is performed. King Pervez agrees. On the day of Nikkah, Yusuf, as a king for one day, orders the Kazi to perform Nikkah of Shahzadi with King Parvez who has to accept the orders of the king of the day. The film ends with the marriage of Shahzadi with King Parvez.
The film had 8 songs including a double version song written by Prem Warbartani (7) and Gulshan Bawra (1) which were set to music by Hansraj Bahl. Four songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 5th and the 6th song which are dual version songs – the first one, a duet rendered by Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle and the second, the Mahendra Kapoor solo. The lyrics and moods of both the songs are different. Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle sing for Jugal Kishore and Naazi, respectively.
The context of the duet song is that during his time of indulgence in pleasure, a drunken Yusuf (Jugal Kishore) sings the song in a happy mood for Shabnam (Naazi), whom he is in love with. Shabnam responds with singing and with her dance performance. Yusuf sings the solo version of the song when all his close friends turn out to be ungrateful and Shabnam refuses to meet him.
