The post today has something in common with Atulji’s post, which inspired this one. Atulji introduced Divya Bharati when he came to the letter D in his series of alphabetical posts featuring actresses lip-synching to Asha Bhosle’s songs. The film from which today’s song is taken is believed to deal, in some way, with Divya Bharati’s death, which occurred nearly 20 years before the film was released. How far this connection is actually true, however, is difficult for me to say.
With today’s post, the actress Devshi Khanduri makes her debut on this blog. Devshi Khanduri is not only an actress, but also a model and lyricist. She was born on 13 March 1983 in Mumbai and brought up in Dehradun. She began modeling while she was in college and subsequently worked in advertising and fashion before making her entry into films. She had already worked on advertising campaigns and fashion assignments before turning to acting.
Her breakthrough came with Dev Anand’s Chargesheet (2011), which was also his final directorial film. Khanduri’s association with Dev Anand began rather unusually. According to accounts of their first meeting, she approached him as an admirer and recited one of her poems. What initially led to a conversation about her writing eventually resulted in Dev Anand offering her a role in Chargesheet. She played Chham Chham in the film.
Khanduri has spoken warmly about Dev Anand and has described him as an important mentor in her early career. In a later interview, she recalled his simplicity, humour and encouragement, and said that she learned a great deal from him. Acting, however, was only one part of her creative interests. Poetry and writing had been important to her since childhood, and she gradually developed a parallel career as a lyricist. Her first film song was written for Chargesheet and was sung by Asha Bhosle. She subsequently wrote “Taang Hun Nahin Jeena” for the Punjabi film Naughty Jatts (2013), with versions sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Harshdeep Kaur. Devshi Khanduri has explained that she sees a connection between acting and writing: acting requires her to imagine and feel a character, while writing allows her to express those feelings in words.
She subsequently appeared in films in several Indian languages, including Telugu and Malayalam productions. Among her better-known acting credits are Iddarammayilatho (2013), Oppam (2016) and Khel Toh Ab Shuru Hoga (2016). In the latter, she played Zara, a small-town woman whose life becomes entangled with a man who resembles her missing husband.
Her work as a lyricist has continued well beyond her early films. She has writing credits associated with films including Paranthe Wali Gali (2014), Ujda Chaman (2019), Jawaani Jaaneman (2020) and The Buckingham Murders (2023).
Alongside her film work, Khanduri has maintained an interest in poetry, music and the visual arts. She has shared recitations of her own lyrics and poems and has described poetry as something particularly close to her. Her official YouTube presence reflects this broader identity, combining cinematic material, poetry and conversations.
The film Chargesheet (2011) was Dev Anand’s last film to be released before his death. He passed away two months after its release. Below is a short synopsis of the film.
Mahesh (Jackie Shroff), a film director; Jimmy (Milind Gunaji), a writer; and Suraj (Yashpal Sharma), a popular superstar, are working on a big-budget film financed by a powerful Dubai-based underworld don, Sultan Bhai (Naseeruddin Shah). Sultan Bhai wants to use the film to launch his girlfriend, Maria (Riya Sen), as a Bollywood actress. He pressures Mahesh to cast Maria as the leading lady instead of Mini (Divya Dutta), an established actress who has previously worked successfully with Mahesh. Although Mahesh is reluctant to drop Mini, he ultimately agrees because Sultan Bhai is financing the film.
Furious at losing the role, Mini refuses to accept the decision quietly. She possesses compromising MMS footage and other information about Mahesh and the people involved in the film. She threatens to expose their secrets unless she is given her role back. Frightened that their secrets will be revealed, Mahesh threatens Mini in return. Mini then confronts Suraj, who also becomes involved in the dispute. When Suraj refuses to support her, Mini threatens to expose him as well, leading to another confrontation in which he threatens to kill her.
The situation becomes even more complicated when Gambhir Singh (Dev Anand), a former high-ranking police officer and Mini’s estranged father-in-law, enters the picture. Gambhir visits Mini and urges her to return home. Their meeting turns into a bitter argument, and the two exchange threats. Later that same night, Mini is found murdered.
With several people having motives to kill her, including Mahesh, Jimmy, Suraj, Maria and potentially others connected to Sultan Bhai, the case turns into a complicated murder mystery. Gambhir Singh is also drawn into the investigation because of his connection with Mini and the suspicious circumstances surrounding their last meeting. The retired police officer decides to uncover the truth. He is given only seven days to solve the murder, clear himself of suspicion and identify the real killer.
As Gambhir Singh investigates, he begins to uncover the secrets, threats, relationships and hidden motives surrounding Mini’s death. Almost everyone connected to the film appears to have something to hide, making it difficult to determine who is telling the truth and who is protecting the real murderer.
The mystery surrounding Mini’s murder forms the central plot of the film, as Gambhir Singh races against time to piece together the evidence and expose the person responsible. The rest of the film follows Gambhir Singh’s investigation as he unravels the web of deception surrounding Mini’s murder and ultimately works to reveal the identity of the real culprit.
Other characters connected to the story include Marian (Shehzad Khan), Ramu (Anish Vikramaditya) and Cham Cham (Devshi Khanduri). Riya Sen appears as Maria in a special appearance in an item number. Devshi Khanduri’s Cham Cham is portrayed as a gypsy-like young woman who has grown up on the margins of society. Her principal function is to provide a contrasting, more earthy presence alongside the film’s Bollywood and underworld characters.
The song featured today is sung by Asha Bhosle and filmed on Devshi Khanduri. The lyrics are by Anant Joshi, and the music is composed by Sanjay-Jaydip. On IMDb, the duo’s name is written as Jaydip-Sanjay, while on Wikipedia and film posters it appears as Sanjay-Jaydip. So, with this post, not only does Devshi Khanduri make her debut on this blog, but so do the film Chargesheet (2011), lyricist Anant Joshi and music composers Sanjay-Jaydip.
