‘Jazbaat’ (1994) was produced and directed by Anant Balani. The cast included Karan Roy (Rohit Roy), Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, Kiran Kumar, Mohnish Bahl, Deepak Shirke, Reema Lagoo, Raj Kiran, Neena Gupta, Vikram Gokhale, Anjaan Shrivastav, Ashutosh Gowariker, Makrand Deshpande, Dinesh Hingoo, Mushtaq Khan, Vinod Pande, Rakesh Dube etc. This was the debut film of Rohit Roy who has adopted his screen name, Karan Roy for the film.
The film’s producer-director, Anant Balani was alumnus of FTII in 1984. He made his directorial debut with Rajiv Mehra’s film, Gawaahi’ (1989) with Zeenat Aman and Shekhar Kapoor. This was followed by Vivek Vaswani’s ‘Patthar Ke Phool’ (1991). He produced his first film, ‘Jazbaat’ (1994), which he also directed. None of his three films made any ‘noise’ on the box office front. On the contrary, the failure of his film, ‘Jazbaat’ (1994) put him in a serious debt trap. He moved to making a TV serial, ‘A Mouth Full of Sky’ (1995), the first English-language serial for Indian television. After a forced ‘sabbatical’ of nearly a decade, Balani returned to the films in 2003, this time taking up the realistic looking stories with three films, ‘Jogger’s Park’ (2003), ‘Mumbai Matinee’ (2003) and ‘Ek Din 24 Ghante’ (2003). Unfortunately, he died of a heart-attack in an autorickshaw before these three films were released. At that time, he was returning from directing the film, ‘Chameli’ (2004) with Kareena Kapoor and Rahul Bose. He was only 41. The film was later directed by Sudhir Mishra.
The story of ‘Jazbaat’ (1994) is as under:
Balraj Shashtri (Kiran Kumar) lives in a village with his wife, Nirmala (Reema Lagoo) and the son, Vishal (Rohit Roy) who is short tempered. Balraj is a priest in the temple and takes care of the land owned by Jagdish (Vikram Gokhale) who stays in a city. Balraj wants his son, Vishal to become a priest but he is interested in becoming a farmer which Balraj resents. He has not completed his schooling.
One day, Jagdish visits his village to sell off his land as his son has gone to the USA and he has no interest in settling down in the village. Balraj is worried as the new owner of the land may not continue his service. Jagdish suggests him to relocate in the city so that he can arrange some employment for him. Vishal is not interested in shifting to the city as his dream of becoming a farmer will be shattered, However, his mother convinces him to accompany them where he could get some employment in a city of dream.
In the city, Vishal does not stick to any employment for a long time because of his short temper nature. Also, he is always restless. He feels that he was deprived of high school as his father could not afford fees. He was deprived of his childhood fantasies of playing with toys as witnessed in his neighbouring children. His father has given up hopes of improvement in Vishal’s behaviour. Varsha (Suchitra Krishnamoorthi) is his neighbour in the city and often visits in his house to chat with his mother. Varsha has developed a crush for Vishal but he is too shy to reciprocate. On the contrary, he sometimes rejects her advances by telling her that for the present, he has more important things to do in his life.
One day, Vishal develops a serious conflict with some local goons when they tease him. He fights alone with half a dozen goons bravely which impresses the notorious gangster, Surma (Deepak Shirke). He offers Vishal to join his gang with a clear message that his works involve illegal jobs. Vishal has no problem so long as he gets money. Inspector Khan (Mohnish Bahl) who has vowed to put Surma behind bar for his illegal activities, counsels Vishal not to get into Surma’s trap knowing that he belongs to a respectable family. However, as per his temperament, Vishal rejects his advice and asserts that he takes work what is right for him. Vishal’s main job with Surma is to deliver the contraband to the ultimate destination without being intercepted by the police. He does his work without fail and Surma develops a strong liking for him.
At the same timeframe, Balraj who has started working as a caretaker in Jagdish’s shops is surprised to know from Jagdish that in his Will, he has made him the custodian of all his wealth and properties under a trust until he feels that his brother, Inder (Raj Kiran) has become matured enough to handle the business at which time he can transfer the wealth and property to him. Jagdish has more trust and confidence in Balraj who has honestly served for more than two decades looking after his land in the village as well as now his jewellery shop.
Jagdish’s Will enrages Inder who has been spending money in luxuries and for sensual pleasure. He has developed causal relationship with many girls which includes Maya (Neena Gupta) who works in Jagdish business and the dancer, Rita (?) just for pleasure. During the heat of arguments with Jagdish, Inder kills him and pass on the blame to Balraj under the alibi that his greed for money has killed his brother after he made him the custodian of all his wealth. Police led by Inspector Khan (Mohnish Bahl) visits Balraj house to arrest him. However, Vishal after cornering Inspector Khan, escapes with his father and takes refuge in Surma’s den. From now onwards, it is Inspector Khan versus Surma, Vishal and his father, Balraj. Khan raids Surma’s hideout and arrests him as well as Balraj. In the police station, Vishal with Surma’s goons overpowers Inspector Khan. However, when Surma was about to kill him, Balraj prevents Surma from killing Inspector Khan on the pretext that he is doing his duties. With this, they come out safely to their hideout.
In the meanwhile, Surma has seen Varsha for the first time as a grown-up girl. Varsha’s father fearing that his daughter will be in danger from Surma who is notorious for supplying young girls in brothels. He lodges a complaint with Inspector Khan who asks him to give evidence against Surma in the court so that law will take its own course to punish him. Surma is arrested and put in police custody for the first time in his life. However, before he could be produced in the court for his formal arrest, Surma’s goons kill Varsha’s father and with no evidence against him, Surma is released.
Varsha’s relationship with Vishal is strained when she comes to know that he works for Surma who has killed her father. Surma, on the other hand, as a vengeance, arranges kidnapping of Varsha to be sold to brothel. Vishal gets Varsha released from the captivity fighting with Surma’s goons and escapes to his hide out where he comes to know that his father, Balraj in a mood of retaliation, has gone to confront with Inder. Vishal with Varsha rushes to Inder’s jewellery shop and takes employees of the shop hostage along with Inder. A big contingent of armed police led by Inspector Khan surround the jewellery shop asking Vishal and Balraj to surrender. He replies to Khan is that he would release all the hostage except Inder provided police contingent are withdrawn and he comes inside the shop.
After agreeing to Vishal’s demand, Inspector Khan enters the shop when he hears a gun shot. From the backdoor, Maya has shot dead Inder as a retribution for her false evidence against Balraj for killing Jagdish. She reveals to Inspector Khan that it was Inder who had killed his brother Jagdish. In this milieu, Vishal with Varsha and Balraj with his wife, Nirmala escape through the backdoor as directed by Maya. However, on the way, they are confronted by Surma and his gang. In the fight, both Vishal and Balraj over power the gang and Surma gets killed by Vishal as his sword accidentally hits him on his neck and with the Vishal’s fist on it, he dies.
Inspector Khan reaches on the spot and orders Vishal and Balraj to surrender. Instead of surrendering, Vishal says to Inspector Khan that no one can stop them for getting away from this city of stone cage unless they are akk killed. He says that they will leave this city as there is nothing to them. If their destiny is death, it is acceptable to them because death is a better alternative than staying in this lifeless city. With this, they all leave for their village and Inspector Khan can not trigger his revolver as his conscious prevents him from doing that. The film ends with Inspector Khan telling his fellow subordinate that he has killed Surma taking the blame on himself rather than Vishal who has actually killed Surma. The villagers warmly welcome Balraj and his family with the addition of Varsha.
The film had five songs written by Ravindra Rawal (2), Dev Kohli (1), Dilip Tahir (1) and Suman Sarin (1) which were set to music by Ram Laxman. The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘dil udta hai kya kehta hai’ rendered by Samir Date and Asha Bhosle who sings for Rohit Roy and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, respectively.
The context of the song is that after he gets his first remuneration from Gangster, Surma (Deepak Shirke) after successful delivery of contraband, he meets Varsha (Suchitra Krishnamoorthi) to whom he had earlier revealed his liking for her. They both go to a park and sing joie de vivre song.
