This song is a particularly enjoyable example of the playful romantic duet that R. D. Burman and Anand Bakshi were so good at creating in the early 1970s. It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, composed by R. D. Burman, and written by Anand Bakshi. On the screen it is lip synced and performed by Randhir Kapoor and Neetu Singh.
At its core, the track is a playful, flirtatious debate between two lovers testing the waters of mutual attraction. Anand Bakshi’s lyrics balance mock hesitation with romantic surrender—the man playfully demands affection, while the woman insists he prove his commitment first. This exchange transforms from simple teasing into a meaningful negotiation through symbolic keepsakes like a dupatta and a ring. By grounding the romance in ordinary, tangible tokens (nishani) rather than overly florid poetry, the song remains relatable and conversational.
The duet shines through the distinct vocal personalities of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Kishore brings a cheeky, impatient energy to the chase, while Lata counters with a warm, coy resistance that makes clear she is an active participant in the banter.
Grounded in movement and playful provocation, it reflects the fresh, energetic sound of early-1970s Burman.
On screen, Randhir Kapoor and Neetu Singh embody this youthful charm. Neetu’s spontaneous coyness pairs seamlessly with Randhir’s harmless persistence, turning their physical movement into an extension of the lyrical banter. Ultimately, the song’s enduring charm lies in its total absence of heavy melodrama. It celebrates love as a lighthearted game of bargaining, teasing, and mutual attraction—making it one of the most delightful Lata-Kishore collaborations of its era.
Four out of five songs have already been posted on the blog. This is the fifth and final one. With this “Rickshawala” (1973) becomes a Yippeed film.
