‘Sikka’ (1976) was produced by Rajendrapal Trehan under the banner of Mona Movies and was directed by Dilip Bose. The cast included Anil Dhawan, Ambika Johar, Ashoo, Helen, Krishan Dhawan, Satyen Kappu, Mohan Choti, Bhushan Tiwari, Rajan Haksar, Yasmin, Keshto Mukherjee, Anjana, Nana Palsikar etc. This was the only film produced by Rajendrapal Trehan. Aashoo was the second lead actress paired with Anil Dhawan.
Ashoo (21/01/1945 – 17/09/2020) began her professional career in Marathi theatres with her real name, Lalita Desai. She became a well-known face of the Marathi theatre when she acted in lead roles in Acharya Atre’s Marathi plays, ‘Brahmachari’ and ‘Lagnachi Bedi’ (Shackles of Marriage) which became commercially successful. She had staller roles in ‘To Me Navhech’ (That’s Not Me) and ‘Ghar Shrimantache’ (House of Wealthy People). Later, she was frequently associated with Dada Kondke’s Marathi films in supporting roles. She worked in about a dozen Marathi films, both in lead and supporting roles before her transition to Hindi films in supporting roles.
Ashoo began her Hindi film career with her original name, Lalita Desai in ‘Aaya Toofaan’ (1964), ‘Noor Mahal (1965), ‘Dilawar’ (1966), ‘Lav Kush’ (1967) and ‘Aadhar’ (1969). She adopted the screen name of Ashoo with Arjun Hingorani’s ‘Kab Kyun Aur Kahaan’ (1970). She worked in about 50 Hindi films, mostly of top banners during 1970-1984 which included ‘ Amar Prem’ (1971), Anuraag’ (1972), ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ (1972), ‘Anamika’ (1973), ‘Joshila’ (1973), ‘Yaadon Ki Baarat’ (1973), ‘Majboor’ (1974), ‘Dharam Karam’ (1975), ‘Ham Kisi Se Kam Naheen’ (1977), ‘Bandish’ (1980), ‘Itni Si Baat’ (1981) etc. Ashoo spent her retired life with her husband and a son in Pune keeping herself in low profile. She passed away on September 17, 2020, in Pune due to kidney ailments.
Ashoo’s death was reported in a Marathi newspaper, ‘Lokmat’ in which it was mentioned that she leaves behind her husband, Trehan and a son. Could Trehan be the same person as Rajendrapal Trehan, the producer of ‘Sikka’ (1976) and husband of Ashoo? In the credit title, Ashoo Trehan has been mentioned as an Associate Producer. As per indiamart.com, Rajendrapal Trehan was said to be in the business of industrial chemicals and pharmaceutical distribution spanning over 40 years during which time, he set up Mona Movies to produce his only film under discussion.
The story of the film is as under:
The film starts with the cash boxes being transferred from a bank’s branch in a cash van. Sheroo (Satyen Kappu) and Shankar (Krishan Dhawan) waylaid the cash van and escape with cash boxes in their jeep. The police team is following them. Sheroo is sure that they will be captured by the police and will have to spend a long time in the jail. They decide that one of them will escape with the cash boxes and the other will get captured by the police. By the toss of a coin, it is decided that Shankar will continue to drive the jeep while Sheroo will escape with cash boxes. Shankar is arrested and gets a long jail term during which Sheroo assures him that during his jail term, he would take care of his family. After his release from the jail, he would get his share of the loot.
After the prison term, Shankar gets released from the jail to meet his family where he is told that his wife is no more and his son Ramesh (Anil Dhawan) has turned a criminal. Shankar goes in search of Sheroo for getting his share of the loot. He gets to know that Sheroo has turned himself in a new personality, Seth Gopaldas, a philanthropist while he continues to be involved in criminal activities. Ramesh and Sunita (Ashoo) have been working for him. Sunita has developed a liking for Ramesh but his first priority is to look for his mother’s killer. Balakram (Mohan Choti) is his side kick.
Finally, Shankar finds out the new avatar of Sheroo and his son Ramesh on the basis of a tattoo. However, when he comes to know that he has developed a serious aversion to his father for deserting him and his mother, Shankar decides not to reveal his identity. Instead, he devotes his entire energy to take the revenge against Sheroo for not keeping his assurance of taking care of his family.
Madhu (Ambika Johar), the daughter of Sheroo has started loving Ramesh But due to his priorities being something else than romance, he is not yet ready to romantically reciprocate her love. Shankar manages to get a job of a caretaker for Sheroo’s son after he saves him from a fall off the cliff. It is a perfect alibi for Shankar who is now called Baba to plan for his revenge against Sheroo and at the same time to remain nearer to his son, Ramesh who works for Sheroo.
As a part of his revenge, Shankar telephones to Sheroo changing his voice that he has been released from the prison and he has come to collect his share of loot. Sheroo recognises Shankar and guides him to their usual place to meet in the night at which time he will part with his share. But in reality, he sends Ramesh to eliminate Shankar.
At the appointed place, Shankar reaches with a plan to kill Sheroo. But it is Ramesh, who has come and is surprised to see Baba. He tries to kill him but sees a tattoo on his forehand which he recalls that he has seen that tattoo on his father’s hand during his childhood. Baba gives all the details about what has happened which makes Ramesh clear that it is not his father but Sheroo who is responsible for the death of his mother. Father and son unite to take revenge against Sheroo. Ramesh returns to falsely report that Shankar has been eliminated. But Ramesh also reveals him that before he died, Shankar has told him that his son would take revenge against Sheroo.
Shankar makes it clear to Ramesh that he wants to take revenge against Sheroo not by killing him but making him to suffer the same fate as he has faced in the prison. Ramesh’s main aim is to disrupt Sheroo’s underworld operations by infiltration to gradually smash his network. He is successful on two count. First Sheroo’s stored consignment of smuggled diamonds get stolen and his delivery of brief case full of cash for some settlement is lost when the car is blown up. Ramesh blames that it could be the handiwork of Shankar’s son who is out to take revenge for ‘killing’ of Shankar.
After recurrence of many such instances, Sheroo incurs tremendous losses to the extent that his creditors are asking for the payment of the consignments which are already delivered. He wards off his creditors by asking for two days’ time to settle. By now, Sheroo is sure that someone close to him in his gang is responsible for sabotaging his delivery of cash and consignments. His suspicion is on his close confidants, Ramesh and Sunita. He tells Sunita that he has no intention of paying his creditors. Instead, he plans to escape to London with her by the night flight with whatever money he has. Ramesh has ensured that all his conversation is being recorded in the room. Sheroo gives poison to Sunita by telling her that it is a drink in celebration before their escape to London. Sunita dies.
In the meanwhile, police has got the clue that Sheroo in the name of Seth Gopaldas has been carrying on the smuggling activities and his tape conversation provided by Ramesh to police is the testimony. After poisoning Sunita, Sheroo is planning to escape when Shankar confronts him and reveals his true identity. Sheroo tries to shoot Shankar but he hits his hand with his crutches. Ramesh arrives with police. Seeing the police, Sheroo drinks poison and requests Shankar to take care of his son as hitherto before he dies.
The film had four songs written by Kafil Azhar which were set to music by Chitragupt. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘haathh youn na chhudaao’ rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Ashoo.
The context of the song is that after the sabotaging of cash delivery as well as stealing of smuggled diamonds, Sheroo (Satyen Kappu) has decided that this time he will entrust the job of delivery of cash bag against smuggled goods to Sunita (Ashoo). Ramesh comes to know about it through Madhu (Ambika Johar). Since Sunita has been wooing Ramesh for a long time, he decides to take advantage of it this time. Ashoo falls for his trap and starts singing a seducing song. The result is that for Sheroo, this time also ‘payment against delivery’ fails.
