Today’s song is from a comedy social film- Kunwara Baap-1942.
There were 15 films with the word Kunwara/Kunwari in their titles. First there was another film with the same title as Kunwara Baap-1974, in which mehmood did a very good role. This film was better known for its original story and good songs. Our Indian producers are unique in their creativity. You will agree with me when I show you how this word was used in their film titles. See these titles….
Kunwari Diljani-1935, Kunwari bahu-1984, Kunwari Chudail-2001, Kunwari Dulhan-1991, Kunwari Maa-1996, Kunwari Padosan- 2003, Kunwari Patni-1937 and kunwari ya Vidhawa-1935. Not to annoy the males, Kunwara Pati-1950 and Kunwara Paying Guest were also made !
Today’s film Kunwara Baap was the first film made by the banner Acharya Art productions, Bombay- a banner launched by N.R.Acharya who started with Sagar movietone in the early 1930s. The film was directed by Kishore Sahu, who was the producer and the Hero of the film also. This was his Debut film as a Director. The story, screenplay, dialogues and Lyrics were written by a big figure of Hindi literature- Amritlal Nagar. Music was by Ramchandra Pal, who was basically a medical Doctor. The cats included kishore Sahu, Pratima Dasgupta, Anjali devi, Moni Chaterjee, Nana Palshikar and others.
The Hindi film industry is a funny place. Great stories of the world fail when made into films and some ‘made to order’ stories become so successful films that the subsequent film makers copy the films, with slight alterations. Sometimes identical titles have nothing in common and sometimes remakes are made with different titles – not matching the original one in any way.
There was a film ‘Kunwaara Baap’ in 1974 also, made by the comedian Mehmood. There was absolutely no similarity in the story of these films. Mehmood’s film was essentially based on Polio Protection, while the 1942 film was a total comedy. In this case only the title is the same, everything else is different.
There is interesting information on ‘Kunwara Baap’ of 1942.
‘Bachelor Mother’ (1939) was a popular Hollywood film directed by Garson Kanim, with Ginger Rogers and David Niven in the lead. It was a story of a single girl, who finds an abandoned child and raises it. She is stamped as an unwed mother and many hilarious situations are created with her lover.
This film was copied by Kishore Sahu, who produced and directed it under the banner of Acharya Art Prodns. He was the hero and the heroine was Pratima Dasgupta. The film was ‘Kunwara Baap’ (1942). The theme was reversed here and the rich bachelor boy finds a child left in his car. Not finding its parents he decides to keep the child, which causes misunderstandings with his lady friend etc.
The noted Hindi novelist Amritlal Nagar (famous for his novels – ‘Boond aur Sagar’ and ‘Shatranj ke Mohre’ etc.) wrote the dialogues and lyrics of this film. He also acted in the film. Nagar had earlier written for the films ‘Sangam’ (1941) and ‘Kisi Se Na Kehna’ (1942). Later he also wrote for ‘Raja’ (1943).
This film became very popular. Later on many films in many languages were made on this theme. Even Hollywood made a remake called ‘Bundle of Joy’ in 1956 with Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Murphy in the lead.
In Madras the AVM supremo saw these two films and decided to make a Tamil film ‘Vazhkai’, on this story. He got his cast ready except the heroine. He wanted a fresh face, preferably a debutante. Anyway, a young Telugu actress Pandhari Bai was selected, but it was found that she could not speak Tamil fluently. MV Raman, AVM’s Director suggested a name of a young dancer Vijayantimala, who was the daughter of actress Vasundhara Devi and MD Ramaswami. She was called and a contract for 3 years was signed .
When ‘Vazhkai’ was being made, AVM supremo saw the Hindi film ‘Khidki’ (1942) with C Ramchandra’s music. This he liked so much that as many as 3 songs from ‘Khidki’ were copied and used in ‘Vazhkai’ by the MD – Sudarshanam. ‘Vazhkai’ was released in 1949 and it was a super duper hit. AVM made a Telugu remake – Jeevitham (1950). This too was a hit. Then AVM decided it was time to invade the Hindi films and a film called ‘Bahaar’ was made in 1951 with Vyjayanthimala and Karan Dewan. Karan Dewan was considered a lucky star in those days. This film also became a hit. ‘Bahar’ also had a similar story as ‘Kunwara Baap’.
The Story of the film Kunwara Baap-1942 was….
Prannath (Kishore Sahu) goes to the jewelry shop to buy a ring for his to-be fiancee. While he is in the store, an unwed mother leaves her infant in the back of Prannath’s car. When he comes out he realizes that he is stuck with the baby much to his discomfiture as his betrothed refuses to believe his story. The situation gives rise to several funny sequences till the villainous father of the child admits to being the real father and agrees to marry the mother of the abandoned child.
Kishore Sahu was an actor, film director, screenWriter, and Producer by profession. Sahu was born on November 22, 1915 in Raigarh district in Rajnandangaon, Chhattisgarh, India. There was a king known as Raja of Raigarh, so his father was the Prime Minister under the kingship of Raja of Raigarh. He continuously took part in the Indian freedom struggle in his early days. He studied with the University of Nagpur that is in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He completed his education in the year 1937, after that he started the writing of stories, short stories. He was married to Preeti, who was a Kumauni Brahman. He had four children named as Mamta Sahu, Vimal Sahu, Naina Sahu, and Rohit Sahu. This writing interest brought him to the cinema industry.
Then he thought about joining cinema and here he joined cinema and started his career as an actor. He participated in the cinema after completing his education from 1937 to 1982. He married Snehprabha Pradhan, but when she came to know that he was already married, she divorced him. He directed around 20 films in a row between 1972 and 1947. He has successively acted in 30 movies. He directed the film ‘Kuwara Baap’ which was the biggest blockbuster at that time. In addition, this move made him the awardee for the BFJA-Best Indian Film Award in the category of best film for 1943. He was very famous for pouring the artistic way and skills into the films. As a director, Raja marked what remains a milestone of art and skills in the Motion Picture. His film Veer Kunal met with huge box office success. He directed the all-time favorite film ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’ with Dilip Kumar and Kamini kaushal. It became the sixth highest grossing film in India in 1948.
His film ‘Mayurpamkh’ entered into the ‘Cannes Film Festival’ in the year 1954. This film was also nominated for the Grand Prize of the Festival. In this film, Kishore played the role of Ranjit Singh. He wrote Teen Bahuraniyan in 1968, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai in 1960, and story, Dialogue, and screenplay for Hare Kanch Ki Chooriyan in 1967. He was also known for giving the break to Meena Kumari in the film ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai’ in the year 1960.’ As a producer, he produced the film Pushpanjali in 1970, Poonam Ki Raat in 1965, Kaalighata in 1951, Sawan Aaya Rein 1949, and Bahurani in 1940.
His daughter Naina Sahu acted as a child artiste in the film Hamari Duniya-52. Kishore Sahu tried to make her a heroine in the film Hare kaanch ki Choodiyan-1967, but she failed. Her second film was Pushpanjali, which too was a flop. Then she left films, got married and settled. He had 2 sons also. One son Vicky did side roles in films. The other son Rohit did nothing. He got married and had 2 daughters but he was jailed for raping his maid servant.
Kishore Sahu died on August 22 in the year 1980 at the age of 64 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The name Anjali Devi, which appears in the cast in the films of the 40’s, is not of the famous south actress Anjali Devi ( 8-12-1927 to 13-1-2014 ), who acted in films like Ek tha Raja-51( dubbed film), Shuk Rambha-53,Ladki-53, Devta-56, Suvarna Sundari-57 etc etc. This Anjali Devi of the 40s was different. As usual, I find that the filmography of south Anjali devi includes films done by Anjali Devi of the 40s. This is what I call Same Name Confusion.
Miss Anjali Devi’s real name was Durgesh Kumari. She was born at Benaras in 1926 in a respectable Brahmin family. Her education was not much but she was fluent in Hindi, Urdu, English and Sanskrit. At the age of 14 years, she came to Bombay, to fulfil her desire of becoming an actress.
She joined Ranjit Films and worked in film Pardesi in the year 1940. The film was released in 1941. She was credited as Durgesh in this film. She was called to Bombay Talkies to work in the film ‘ Punarmilan’-40, directed by Najam Naqvi. When a section of artistes, led by S.Mukherjee, left Bombay Talkies to start Filmistan in 42, one of the BT directors N.C.Acharya also left and started his own company Acharya Art Productions. Anjali Devi also left to join Acharya.
She acted in 3 films of Acharya, Kunwara Baap-42, Uljhan-42 and Aage Kadam-43. She later on acted in Paristan-44, and Parivartan-49. She then got married to N.C.Acharya and settled as a Housewife.
