‘Gunaahgaar’ (1980) was produced and directed by Rahul Rawail under his banner, Rahul Theatres International. The cast included Rajendra Kumar, Asha Parekh, Rishi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Ranjeet, Asrani, Rita Bhaduri, Pinchoo Kapoor, Kamal Kapoor, Sundar, Gufi Paintal etc. Raza Murad and Paintal made their special appearances in the film. It was a rare occasion that Ranjeet played a positive role, a friend of Rishi Kapoor though he had a shades of villain for those harming his friend.
Rahul Rawail, (the son of producer-director, H S Rawail) who has been assisting Raj Kapoor, debuted as a producer-director with this film. Although, his first two films did not create ‘noise’ on the box office front, his next two films which he directed for two producers. Rajendra Kumar and Dharmendra in which their sons, Kumar Gaurav and Sunny Deol were introduced, became super hits. The films were ‘Love Story’ (1981) and ‘Betaab’ (1983), respectively.
The film’s story is about a police officer who, during the course of performing his duties, kills a radical union leader who tries to assassinate the mill owner. The union leader happens to be the brother of his fiancée. Devasted by the death of her brother, the police officer’s fiancée is unable to forgive her fiancé resulting her walking out of his life to a undisclosed destination. She gives birth to a son born out of wedlock though her police officer-fiancé has informally married her in his house by putting the ‘mangalsutra’ around her neck. While the police officer is under the emotional stress, parallelly, their grown-up son becomes a conman who falls in love with a scammer-girl. They both give up their con jobs and get married. However, the circumstances force them to join a gang of robbers. After years, the same duty-bound police officer faces the moral dilemma. His son has committed a crime for which he has to arrest him. The film has a tragic end.
The story of the film in detail is as under:
Police officer Madan Singh (Rajendra Kumar) is at the logger head with a radical union leader, Arun (Raza Murad) of Mill labourers because he believes in violent actions. Arun happens to be the brother of Madan’s fiancée Sushma (Asha Parekh). They would have got married but for the opposition from Arun, who believes that one day, he will be shot dead by Madan.
Alarmed by Arun’s thought, one night, Sushma gets nightmare. In panic, she rushes to Madan’s home who assures her that he will make sure that Arun will be present when they get married. She spends night in Madan’s house and they share an intimate moment. Next morning Sushma is worried about what she has indulged in the night. Madan gives her assurance by putting a ‘mangalsutra’ around her neck signifying that he has married her.
The mill labourers strike continues. One day, one of the union leaders gets killed. Arun believes that this was the handwork of the mill owner (Kamal Deep). He rushes to his house in a bid to assassinate him. Police officer, Madan Singh reaches in time. He asks Arun not to take law into his own hand. But Arun tries to stab the mill owner during which Madan shoots him. Arun is seriously injured. Madan admits him in the hospital. Arun takes a vow from Sushma that she will keep distance from Madan Singh. With this assurance, Arun dies.
Sushma leaves her house for an unknown destination. She sustains herself by stitching dresses. Madan Singh tries to locate her by giving newspaper advertisement but of no anvil. Months pass. Sushma already pregnant with Madan’s child, delivers a baby boy. He is given the name, Amar Madan Singh, in the school. Sushma also adopts an orphan girl Pooja to get Amar a sister.
The film’s story takes a leap jump. Amar (Rishi Kapoor) and Geeta (Reeta Bhaduri) have grown up. One day Amar accidentally meets Madan Singh who has now become DSP when he goes along with his companion, Madhu (Parveen Babi) to con the perople by collecting donations. He finds in the list his name against which a donation of a high amount has been written to attract other donors to give similar amount. He catches them in their ‘donation’ business and gives them sermon that the money earned through hard work will give them greater satisfaction than money earn through cheating. Amar follows the advice given by DSP, Madan Singh. He starts working in a grocery store.
Amar faces some kind of resistance from shop owner’s (Sundar) son, Shashi (Shashi Kiran) because Amar is strict in allowing him to take cash from the shop as he is a gambler. One day, Shashi picks up a gold locket which Amar has kept on a table. He finds that locket with Shashi. Amar snatches the locket from Shashi and escapes before crowd follow him thinking that he is a robber. In the nick of time, Amar is saved when Goli (Ranjeet) on his motor cycle picks him up and drives away. Having lost his job at the grocery shop, Amar rejoins with Madhu, this time in robbing business with his friends, Goli and later Pyarelal (Asrani).
The gang’s philosophy is that revolver should be used only for threatening and not for harming their potential target for loot. They loot jewelry from a safe-keepers house at a time when Geeta’s marriage date has been fixed. DSP Madan Singh is sure that it is the handiwork of Amar who will definitely attend his sister, Geeta’s marriage. Madan Singh goes in wedding venue in the guise of a guest. Amar attends the marriage in the guise of the palanquin holder. DSP Madan Singh recognises Amar who requests that after his sister’s departure, he himself will surrender before him. DSP lets Amar go with palanquin.
When Geeta reaches her husband’s house, it turns out that it is a sham marriage with Keshav (Syed Jari Ali) with the intention of making her a mistress of Seth Dindayal (Pinchoo Kapoor) for whom Keshav works. Seth Dindayal tries to molest Geeta. Amar rushes inside the house and pins down both Dindayal and Keshav. As Amar is leaving the house with Geeta, Keshav suddenly shoots Geeta dead.
Next day, Keshav files a FIR with police charging Amar for shooting dead Geeta. Amar is on the run. For the first time, he breaks his rule and loads his revolver with bullets while Keshav is trying to escape from India. Amar follows him and shoots Keshav dead. Now, on the recommendation of DSP Madan Singh, police Commissioner (Kamal Kapoor) issue orders to arrest Amar, alive or dead.
DSP, Madan Singh himself takes over to carry out Police Commissioner’s orders. Madan Singh visits Sushma’s house to know the whereabouts of Amar during which both get into arguments about his duties towards law and towards his own offspring which he failed to fulfill. At that time, Amar enters the room who have been listening to their conversations. He surrenders before DSP Madan Singh. He tells DSP that after knowing him to be his father, he can die with a proud feeling that he is the son of DSP for whom law is primacy before his own relatives. However, Madhu who comes with a baby boy objects to his surrender on the ground that he cannot play with the life of his new born son. She pleads him to get out of the place.
Amar hands over his infant boy to DSP and escapes with Madhu. For the first time, DSP is struggling in his mind which is in conflict with his duties as a police officer and as a father. However, Police Commissioner advises him to pursue Amar so that his integrity remains unquestionable. He with his police team pursue Amar with his gang members. First, Pyarelal get killed in an encounter with the police. Goli makes a suicidal attempt to obstruct DSP’s jeep in chasing Amar in which he gets killed. Finally, DSP corners Amar and Madhu in their motor cycle, He orders them to surrender as they have been cornered by the police. However, they both tries to run away during which DSP fires from his revolver in which Madhu gets killed and Amar seriously injured. DSP admits him in the hospital.
The film ends with DSP, Madan Singh putting ‘mangalsutra’ around the neck of Sushma as per Amar’s last wish after which he passes away.
The film had four songs written by Gulshan Bawra which were set to music by R D Burman. The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘kuchh din baad ban jaayenge ham tum daddy mummy’ rendered by R D Burman and Asha Bhosle who sings for Rishi Kapoor and Parveen Babi, respectively.
The context of the song is that Amar (Rishi Kapoor) is on the run from the police along with Madhu (Parveen Babi) for killing Keshav(Syed Jari Ali). They are hiding along with other gang members, Goli (Ranjeet) and Pyarelal (Asrani). During this period, Amar and Madhu get married. One day, Amar sees Madhu eating a raw mango. In response to Amar, she says that he is going to become a daddy. The song follows after the dialogue
The playful song with banter and teasing can be regarded as a ‘relief song’ for the audience who has been subject to intense family drama. This jovial song is in contrast with the intense moral dilemma faced by Amar’s father, DSP Madan Singh who is bent upon arresting his son. His mother, Sushma (Asha Parekh) once again faces the repercussion of an upright DSP if Amar gets arrested by him.
