Blog Day :6670Post No. :20641

Today’s song is from a historically important Hindi film- Aap ki sewa mein-1947.

The film was made by Chandrama Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by Vasant Joglekar and the music was given by Datta Davjekar to songs written by Mahipal – yes, the same Mahipal who became famous as an actor for Mythological films.

From the Hindi film history point of view, the film was very important, because Lata Mangeshkar sang her First song as a Playback singer in this film. The song was “Pa laagu, Kar jori re “, which was sung on the screen by Rohini Bhate (14-11-1924 to 10-11-2008), a famous dancer.

No information about this film is available, nor the film print is available anywhere-including the National Film Archives. The cast of the film was Saroj Borkar as the leading lady with D.R.Gokhale as the lead actor, Bhal Marathe, Dikshit, Kesari, Shantarin, Indurao Nimbalkar and others.

In olden days, there were 3 major film centres-Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta. After 1947, all the Hindi film activity at Lahore shifted to Bombay. By mid 50’s even Calcutta almost stopped making Hindi films. Many Hindi speaking artistes in various disciplines of film making shifted to Bombay and finally Bombay became the only and the main Hindi film making Centre.

The year 1947 is a reminder not only for the Independence of India, but also for the upheaval that took place in the film industry that time. More than in any other industry in India, Muslims were plentiful, working in different sections and departments of the Hindi film industry. Majority of them migrated to the newly formed Muslim Nation of Pakistan. This did create a lot of disturbance in the film industry. Right from the beginning of 1947, there were signs that soon the British would leave India – after dividing it into two Nations, India and Pakistan. When the month and date became known for the Partition, there was a great hurry among the filmmakers to complete their projects on hand and in process, compromising many factors like quality of the film, number of songs and such other things.

This resulted in the record number of films made in 1947 alone – 181 Hindi films and about 100 films in other languages in India. This was a record which remained unbroken till 1985, when 187 Hindi films were made. Thus from 1931 to 1985, this record remained unbroken for more than 50 years ! Obviously, this resulted in a big compromise on quality to achieve quantity with many films produced half heartedly. Most or rather many films made in 1947 remained obscure, unheard of and many flopped due to poor quality. Actually only few films were released in 1947, because many films were released in 1948 and 1949, with some films being released in Pakistan too.

Did you ever hear about films Amar Asha, Angoorbala, Attention, Barrister, But Tarash, Chalte Chalte, Chandrahas, Dagabaz Dost, Dehati,Ek kadam,Gaurav,Giribala, Heera, Intezar ke baad, Jhalak,Jurmana, Khaufnak aankhen, Lalaat, Mangalsutra, Moti, Sewa gram, Stage girl, Tohfa or Utho jago ? Of course not all films were below standards. Some of the landmark films were also made in 1947, like Shehnai, Mirza Sahiban, Jugnu, Saajan, Naatak, Meera, Elan,Aap ki sewa mein, Dard, Do Bhai, Neel Kamal or Parwana etc. However by and large the picture was like this only.

Today’s song was sung by G. M.Sajan, who was a vintage playback singer active during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He is primarily remembered for his collaborations in multi-singer chorus tracks and rare duets alongside legends like Mohammed Rafi, Shamshad Begum, and Lata Mangeshkar.

Because he typically shared the microphone with dominant voices of the golden era, much of his work consists of patriotic numbers, playful social tracks, and ensemble movie songs. These are the only 6 other songs which he sang in Hindi films….

“Desh Mein Sankat Aaya Hai” (Aap Ki Sewa Mein, 1947): A notable patriotic duet sung alongside Mohammed Rafi. This film is historically significant as it also marked the Hindi playback debut of Lata Mangeshkar.

“Khushiyan Manayein Kyon Na Hum / Jalnewale Jala Karein” (Khidki, 1948): A highly energetic ensemble track featuring an all-star lineup including Mohammed Rafi, Chitalkar (C. Ramchandra), G.M. Sajan, Shamshad Begum, Lata Mangeshkar, and Mohantara Talpade.

“Hum Hind Ki Hai Naariyan” (Khidki, 1948): Another popular group number from the same musical hit, composed by C. Ramchandra.

“Dekho Ji Balam Ji Hamen Chhedo Na” (Beete Din, 1947): A rare playful duet sung with the celebrated vintage singer Zohrabai Ambalewali.

“Saraba O Saraba” (Bairam Khan, 1946): A vintage track performed with Shamshad Begum and a supporting chorus.

“Is Duniya Mein Kaun Bada Hai” (Kaafila, 1952): A collaborative track with Mohammed Rafi and Shamshad Begum, featuring lyrics by Kavi Pradeep.

The film was directed by Vasant Joglekar.

Our film industry is full of ungrateful people. There is nothing like true friendship here. So called friends do not hesitate to cut the throat of others for selfish purposes. There are hundreds of such instances here. However for every rule there is an exception and there was ONE friendship which was used as an example here. That is the friendship of Vasant Joglekar and Ashok Kumar. They were true friends and their friendship ended only when Joglekar died.

Vasant Joglekar, actor-by compulsion and producer/Director-by choice was born on the Christmas day, 25th September 1914 at Nagpur. He started his filmi career as assistant to Master Vinayak in 1942. In the struggling days he met Ashok Kumar and they became friends forever.

Starting with Aap ki seva mein-47,in which Lata Mangeshkar sang her first Hindi film solo, Joglekar produced 10 films and directed 20 films ( 11 Hindi and 9 Marathi). In one of the Marathi films directed by this young man-Vasant Joglekar, actress Sumati Gupte was acting in it. They fell in love and soon got married in 1943. Sumati became Sumati Gupte Joglekar. In due course, the couple had 3 daughters- Meera, Chanda and Madhushri.

In almost all his films Ashok Kumar was a fixture. There was a time when Ashok kumar was involved in 30 films at one time, still the 31st film was that of Joglekar. The only condition Dadamuni used to put was that Joglekar’s wife, actress/housewife Sumati Gupte Joglekar should provide him food Tiffin cooked by her own hands, at the shooting place ! . He was very fond of her cooking. No wonder, Sumati was a CKP by birth-a fish eater and Bangali babu liked Fish dishes very much !

Joglekar’s Filmography as a Director in Hindi films – Aap ki sewa mein-47, Adalat-48, Nand Kishore-51, Jeet Kiski-52, Firdaus-53, Samaj-54, Karigar-58, Aanchal-60, Aaj aur kal-63, Ek Kali Muskayee-68 and last film Prarthana-69. Vasant Joglekar tried to promote his daughter Meera as a Heroine in Hindi films, with the film Ek Kali Muskayee-68. However, she was not successful and the film was a flop. Vasant Joglekar died on 13-1-1993.

The Lyricist was Mahipal. Mahipal or Mahipal Singh or Mahipal Bhandari (24 November 1919 – 15 May 2005) was a film actor who worked in Hindi cinema mostly in stunt films like Parasmani, Zabak, Cobra Girl, Jantar Mantar, Arabian nights themed movies such as Alibaba, Aladdin And The Wonderful Lamp, Roop Lekha, Sunehari Nagin, and Hindu mythological movies like Sampoorna Ramayan, Ganesh Mahima, Veer Bhimsen, Jai Santoshi Maa. He is known for playing the iconic role of Lord Vishnu, and his two avatars, Lord Rama and Lord Krishna in lot of various puranic, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavata Purana based movies, besides playing Tulsidas and Abhimanyu, and is also best known as the lead in V. Shantaram’s Navrang (1959), and the songs “Tu Chhupi Hai Kahan Me Tadapta Yahan” and “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi”. He acted in several well-known films of the 1950s and 1960s including V. Shantaram’s Navrang (1959) and Babubhai Mistry’s Parasmani (1963).

He was born on 24-11-1919 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, where after his schooling, he graduated in literature from Jaswant Government College Jodhpur. Thereafter, he worked in the theatre before migrating to Mumbai in the early 1940s.

He made his film debut in the 1942 film Nazrana. However, the film didn’t work, thereafter he wrote lyrics for four films. He went on to work with directors such as Sohrab Modi and later with the Wadia Brothers, Homi Wadia and J. B. H. Wadia, however, it was his work with V. Shantaram that got him lasting acclaim. He worked in several mythological and historical films with actresses such as Nirupa Roy, Mala Sinha and even Meena Kumari.

Mahipal was never counted as an A category actor and so, leading actresses who started their careers with Mahipal in the lead were ashamed of revealing or accepting this fact. For example, In all her interviews, Mala Sinha always quoted “Rangeen Raten”-56 with Shammi Kapoor as her first film in Bombay. She was ashamed of revealing that in the film Riyasat-55, her Hero was Mahipal. She always hid this fact. Similarly, A grade Heroine Meena Kumari also had done several Mythological and costume films before Baiju Bawra took her high up and above other Heroines. Films like Shri Ganesh Mahima-50, Laxmi Narayan-51, Hanuman Paataal vijay-51 and Alladin aur Jadui Chirag-52 had Mahipal as her Hero. In her later years, she always hid her earlier film Heroes.

He also did a series of fantasy films based on Arabian Nights, including Alibaba and 40 Thieves (1954), Jennie (1953) ,Aladdin Aur Jadui Chirag (1952) and Alibaba ka Beta (1955), which gave him popularity even in the Gulf countries. Later in his career, he switched to character roles, and appeared in films such as Jai Santoshi Maa (1975), a 1970s hit.

He wrote 13 songs in 4 films, namely Mali-44, Aap ki Sewa mein-47 (Lata Mangeshkar’s first playback song was written by Mahipal in this film), Mere Laal-48 and Adalat-48. Mahipal acted in 131 Hindi films. He had also worked in Marathi, Rajasthani and Assamese films. His first film was Nazrana-42 and the last film was Amar Jyoti-84….a career spanning 42 years. He worked with Shakila in 18 films, with Anita Guha in 11 films,With Shyama in 6 films, and in 4 films with Nirupa Roy. He worked with Meena Kumari in 4 films. He is the only actor in Mythological films who sang a song on screen in the role of Shri Ram, in the film Hanuman Pataal Vijay-1951.

He died in Mumbai of cardiac arrest, at the age of 86. He was survived by his wife Akkal Kunwar and daughters Sushila Jain and Nirmala Oswal.
