‘Garam Khoon’ (1980) was produced by Tejnath Zar who also wrote the story and dialogues for the film which was directed by A Salaam. The cast included Vinod Khanna (in double role), Sulakshana Pandit, Ajit, Nazir Hussain, Imtiaz Khan, Sulochana Latkar, Keshto Mukherjee, Shetty, Helen, Shviraj, Komila Wirk, K N Singh, Satish Kaul etc.

The film commenced shooting some time in 1975 with the title, ‘Chamak’. Later, the film’s title was changed to ‘Ghamand’. The film faced a delay in its completion due to financial and date issues of main actors. Finally, the film was completed under the title ‘Garam Khoon’ and was certified by CBFC on February 29, 1980. The film was released in theatres on March 7, 1980. In this film, Satish Kaul makes a friendly appearance in the role of a Police Inspector and the brother of lead actress, Sulakshana Pandit.

Satish Kaul (08/09/1948 – 10/04/2021) was born in a Kashmir Pandit family. His father, Mohan Lal Aima was a musician and was associated with Radio Kashmir. He had musically composed a Kashmiri Opera ‘Bombur ta Yemberzal’ (1953), the tune of which inspired the creation of the song, bumbro bumbro shyaam rang bumbro in ‘Mission Kashmir’ (2000).

After graduating from Srinagar, Satish Kaul joined FTII, Pune and completed the acting course in 1969. ‘Prem Parbat’ (1973) was Satish Kaul’s debut film in a lead role which was followed by ‘Ang Se Ang Laga Le’ (1974), ‘Daawat’ (1974) , ‘Asliyat’ (1974) and ‘Mere Sartaj’ (1975). These films failed at the box office. He started getting supporting roles in Hindi films which included ‘Warrant’ (1975), ‘Atmaram’ (1979), ‘Nek Parveen’ (1982), ‘Karma’ (1986), ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1989) and many more. During his Hindi film career from 1974 to 1998, Satish Kaul has acted in around 65 films which included some ‘B’ grade films. He was one of the busiest actors in Punjabi films in the lead roles. He was called the ‘Amitabh Bachchan’ of Punjabi cinema. However, his flourishing career in Punjabi films got a setback during the militancy in Punjab.

When Satish Kaul’s filmy career was going in the right direction, his personal life turned topsy turvy. He got married to Nimmi Singh, a NRI from Durban, South Africa. But after a year or so of their marriage, they divorced as his wife wanted Satish Kaul to migrate to Durban to stay with her family. This was not agreeable to him because he had a flourishing career in Punjabi films. Thereafter, his father and mother suffered from cancer for which he spent a lot of his savings for the cancer treatments. Both his father and mother did not survive from cancer.

Satish Kaul got financially ruined when he sold his flat in Mumbai to set up an acting school in Ludhiana in 2011 with his personal savings. Within a short period, he had to close down his acting school. With this, it became difficult for him during his old age to sustain himself. At one point of time, he was living in an old age home. The Punjab Government granted him a monthly pension and a house in Ludhiana. From 2018 onwards, he was looked after by his fan and a nurse, Satya Devi.

Satish Kaul passed away on April 10, 2021, at the age of 73 due to Covid. [With inputs from ‘Hindustan Times’, ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ and ‘Meerut Manthan’].

The story of the film under discussion is as under:

Sood (Nazeer Hussain), the owner of Sood industries, stays with his wife (Sulochana Latkar) and his twin school-going sons Ravi and Babloo. He is mainly in the export business, which is managed by the manager, Vishal (Ajit). One day, while loading the shipment for export under the watchful eyes of Vishal, a box meant for export accidentally falls on the ground and breaks open spilling the plastic sachets of illegal drugs. It is the handiwork of Vishal who also works for a smuggling syndicate led by Rajan (Rajan Haksar). Sood dismisses Vishal from his job. As a revenge, Vishal kidnaps one of Sood’s twin sons, Babloo and also Sood when he approaches for the settlement. Sood is kept in solitary confinement. Babloo, who grows up as Johny (Vinod Khanna in a double role) starts indulging in criminal activities under the guidance of Vishal.

The film’s story goes fast forward by two decades. Johny, who is in a prison for criminal activities, escapes from the prison and returns home to surprise Vishal who is thrilled to see him. He reveals to Johny his new assignment which will give him a lavish life without any criminal activity. He has to present himself as Ravi in the Sood household to capture Sood Industries and the family’s fortune. Pummy (Bindu), an associate of Vishal is assigned to transform Johny into Ravi in mannerism, style and behaviour. Pummy is familiar with Ravi’s mannerism as she works in Sood Industries as a secretary to Ravi (Vinod Khanna in a double role).

In Sood’s household, there is a party to introduce Ravi’s fiancé, Rama (Sulakshna Pandit) after their engagement. Ravi has taken over the charge of Sood Industries after his father has gone missing. Vishal sees Rama as a potential threat to his plan to place Johny as Ravi in Sood household as Rama shares a private and intimate bond with Ravi which Johny would not know. Pummy helps Vishal by successfully creating a misunderstanding between Rama and Ravi about his alleged illicit relationship with a girl. Rama’s brother, a police inspector (Satish Kaul) has sent the emotionally affected Rama to Simla to be with her friend for some time. When Ravi comes to know about the allegation on him, he also proceeds to Simla to convince her. of his innocence. Vishal takes it as an opportunity to eliminate Ravi during his travel to Simla by stimulating a car accident so that Johny can take over Sood Industries disguised as Ravi and police will close the files of criminal cases against Johny thinking that the dead body is that of Johny.

The scene shifts to Simla. Gullu (Imtiaz) stimulates Ravi’s jeep accident. Ravi is declared dead. Johny, now disguised as Ravi, takes over Sood Industries and successfully discharges his acts as Ravi to such an extent that even his mother takes him to be Ravi. In Simla, Ravi miraculously survives in the car accident and after recuperating, he is joined by Rama after their misunderstanding is cleared. They both escape to the city after another deadly attempt by Vishal’s gang is made to eliminate him.

In the Sood household, Ravi is shocked by the presence of his look like Johny in the house discharging all his work as Ravi. But the staff thinks Ravi to be imposter. Johny disguising as Ravi informs police inspector that Johny has been seen wandering around Sood household. Johny’s file in the police station is now reopened. But Vishal does not want Ravi to be captured by Police as it will open pandora’s box. Instead, he plans to eliminate him through his henchmen.

By disguising as Ravi, Johny has effectively converted the Sood household as a safe base for conducting his underworld activities. Now, both Ravi and Rama face the dual threat from Vishal’s gang and also from police who are tracking Ravi assuming him to be Johny for the various crimes committed by Johny. When police commissioner (K N Singh) who is the family friend of Sood household gets to know from the police inspector that the export consignments from Sood Industries had some illegal drugs. But knowing the family, it creates a doubt in the mind of the Police Commissioner as to the identity of Ravi who could as well be his long-lost brother, Babloo. So he instructs Ravi’s mother to somehow manage to take the fingerprint of Johny’s fingers now disguised as Ravi and also to check with some childhood memories. With this a seed of suspicion on Johny has been implanted in the mind of Ravi’s mother who sees every action of Johny (as Ravi) in suspicion.

Soon, Ravi’s mother is convinced through the childhood memories that Johny acting as Ravi is Babloo. When Ravi has an opportunity to shoot Johny, she prevents him from doing so by revealing that Johny is his real brother Babloo who was kidnapped by Vishal. Johny gets convinced as it was Vishal who has brought him up as a criminal to take revenge against their father. Both Ravi and Johnny, now Babloo, decide to expose Vishal by their joint operation.

Now, it is the time for Johny to become Ravi for Vishal in his own den to expose his underworld connection, his corporate fraud when he was working as manager in Sood Industries, his kidnapping of Babloo and the assassination attempt on Ravi in Simla. After a long fight with Vishal and his gang during which Vishal accidentally shoots his son, Gullu. Vishal is now emotionally down to confess his all crimes. The police take custody of Vishal. Johny now Babloo, due to his past crimes, offers himself to the police not before he is embraced by his mother.

The film had five songs written by Shingar (3), Hasrat Jaipuri (1) and Vithalbhai Patel (1) which were set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 4th song, ‘paina Loopi kah ke pukaaro’ rendered by Asha Bhosle, who sings for Helen. The song is written by Shingar who is none other than playback singer and music director, Sharda. I guess, the words, ‘paina Loopi’ used in the song were gibberish words to go well with a cabaret song and not for the famous Hollywood and Spanish actress, Penelope Cruz who had not become an actress when this song was written.

The context of the song is that Vishal (Ajit) has hosted a party for his clients with a dance performance by Helen to entertain them. Towards the end of the dance, Vishal takes his son, Gulu (Imtiaz Khan) to a separate room to plan for the elimination of Ravi (Vinod Khanna) after he has survived the stimulated jeep accident in Simla. Police Inspector, (Satish Kaul) is also present who is searching for Ravi, thinking him to be Johny (Vinod Khanna).

Editor’s note:-The Spanish female name Penélope is pronounced as Painaloopi (as pronounced in the song). So it is not a gibberish word but the name of the character played by Helen.

Here is a link that demonstrates how to pronounce Penélope. The pronounciation matches the pronounciation of this word in the song.

Atul ji,

Helen had this dance song as item number. She has no role in the film to get the name ‘Penelope’ to her character. Also, no one is calling her ‘Penelope’ before she starts her dance song.

Another point is as to why should lyricist think of ‘Penelope’ which was not a well known name at the time of writing the lyrics? And I don’t think that the lyricist had Penelope of the Greek mythology in mind.

By the way, the cover of the LP reocrd of the songs used the words ‘Pana Loopi’.
