#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Dashehraa-1956’. This is a rare song which has been made available more than a year back on internet. Regulars on this blog would have noted that there were many songs that were considered as ‘not traceable’ or were hitherto unavailable on internet are coming up gradually in recent years or more precisely in last couple of years. During the ‘regulars meet at Mumbai’ in 2023 I had made this observation during discussions about such ‘untraceable’ songs. On this blog our senior Shree Sudhir jee had taken up a series for the ‘missing films’ of the decade of ‘sixties’ earlier. At that time only one song from such movies (around hundred in numbers) was dug up and posted. I have noted that for all such movies now their other songs have also come up and posted either by music companies or passionate music lovers. This is ultimately going to increase the number of songs available with us and in turn reducing the number of songs that were considered as lost or un-traceable.

Yesterday 13th May 2025 was the seventy-nineth birthday of Shree Bishwanath Chatterjee compiler of Hindi Film Geet Kosh Vol-V (1971-1980).
This post is delayed on my part as I could not finish it yesterday. Earlier I had planned to visit to Nagpur for this special occasion, but it could not happen. I had spoken to our common friend Mr Avinash Shravane at Nagpur, and we thought that few likeminded friends would also attend this function. But it did not materialize. However, few friends did arrange some program as informed to me by Mr Chatterjee himself, when I called him to wish him on his birthday yesterday. (I am yet to get the updates about the function held yesterday, so that may be covered later 😊).

“Naag Mani-1957” was directed by Raman B Desai for ‘Bombay Movietone, Bombay’. Raman B. Desai was also the producer of this movie, which was a ‘mythological’ movie. The cast of this movie had Nirupa Roy, Trilok Kapoor, Manhar Desai, P. Kailash, S.N. Tripathi, Rajan Haksar, Poonam Kapoor, Sundar, Babu Raje, Yashodhara Katju, Rajrani, Helen, Sheela Kashmiri, Roopa, Heera Sawant, Uma Khosla, Lata, Nimmo Firoze, Lata Roy, Sarla, Buta Ram Sharma, Gangaram, K.P. Rao, S.P. Anand, S.N. Ghosh, Avtaar Singh and others. This movie was passed by censor board on 30.09.1957.

‘Mitr, My Friend’ (2002) was an English language film which was directed by debutant, Revathy who also produced the film along with her husband, Suresh Menon. The main cast included Shobana, Nasir Abdullah and Preeti Vissa with the supporting cast of Matt Phillips, Black Ormsby, Shirley Bannet, Brain Linebaugh, Janine Pibal, Michael Bailey, Sreenivasan, Karthik etc. The film is known for having primarily all woman crew, which according to Revathy, was a mere coincidence. Also, they were first timers associated with a feature film.

Vyas, Amarnath, Vishwas Kunte, Ravi Kumar, Babu Raje, Radheshyam, Shribhagwan, Dubey, Anand Tiwari, Prithvi, Ajeet Soni, Pt. “Maan Abhimaan-1980” was directed by Hiren Nag for ‘Rajshri Productions, Bombay’. It had Rameshwari, Raj Kiran, Shashi Puri, Kavita Kiran, C.S. Dubey, Jagirdar, Yunus Parvez, Sundar, Arun Kumar, Pardesi, Albela, Master Rajesh, Chandu Allahabadi, Brijendra Mohan and others. Amrish Puri, Iftekhar and Sulochana had guest appearances in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.08.1980. As usual for movies from ‘Rajshri Productions’ this movie “Maan Abhimaan-1980” is another movie where they give us a ‘clean, heart-warming, family drama movie with some very nice musical compositions that come along the story’. I had not watched this movie in those years. In the year ‘1980’, when this movie was released, my age was 12 years and six months. I do not have any specific memory related to this movie or its songs or any discussion about it in our group of ‘cricket playing-movie watching’ friends.
