Filmistan Studio was formed by Shashadhar Mukherjee, Ashok Kumar, Rai Bahadur Chunnilal and Gyan Mukherjee in 1943 after they left Bombay Talkies due to differences with Devika Rani. She had taken over the charge of the Bombay Talkies after the death of her husband, Himanshu Rai in 1940. ‘Chal Chal Re Naujawaan’ (1944) was Filmistan’s maiden film. Thereafter, Filmistan had produced box office successful films such as ‘Do Bhai’ (1947), ‘Shaheed’ (1948), ‘Shabnam’ (1949). Samaadhi’ (1950) and ‘Sargam’(1950). After the death of Rai Bahadur Chunnilal in 1950, Tolaram Jalan took over the Filmistan while Shashadhar Mukherjee continued as its Creative Head. Post-1950, Filmistan produced successful films like ‘Anarkali’ (1953), ‘Naastik’ (1954), ‘Naagin’ (1954), ‘Munimji’ (1955), ‘Tumsa Nahi Dekha’ (1957), ‘Paying Guest’ (1957) etc.

Film Muqaddar-1950 was a Bombay Talkies film in its last gasping years. Established on 22-6-1934 by the adventurous couple Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani. This public limited company was a highly respected organisation in the film industry. Himanshu Rai had a knack of employing very talented and loyal employees. He had employed a lot of Germans in his company, as he had seen how work oriented people they were, when he and Devika Rani studied and worked in Germany. He had also called his fear friend Niranjan Pal from England to write stories etc in Bombay Talkies.

Today’s song is from the film Ladies Only-1939.
The year was 1939 and the British Government had declared war against Germany and Japan, as soon as the WW II began. All countries ruled by Britain were – willingly or unwillingly, drawn into the war efforts and its effects. The war began in the month of September and soon various restrictions came into operation – like rationing, blackouts, shortages etc. The film industry which was still under its development stage suffered. It also realised the importance of remaining united as one industry. However, all that came after 1 or 2 years. In 1939 there was not much effect seen on the film industry.

The film was made by Rajkamal kala Mandir, Bombay and V Shantaram had directed it for his own banner. The story, dialogues, Screenplay and Lyrics were by Dewan Sharar. The film was made by Shalini Cinetone, Kolhapur in 2 languages- Marathi and Hindi. The film story was based on a novel by N.H.Apte, in Marathi. It was directed by Kala Maharshi Baburao Painter and its music was composed by Govind Rao Tembe. All the 10 songs of the film were written by Pt. Anand Kumar. The cast of the film was Durga Khote, Master Shyam, Nanasaheb Phatak, Raja Paranjape, Heerabai Badodekar, Keshav Rao Datey and others.

The year 1937 was a year of Revolution for the newly started Talkie Films. Initially the films were mainly based on Folk tales, Parsi dramas and Mythological stories. 1937 was a year in which the Film industry was trying to drop its old skin and don a New Avtar. Today’s fun song is from the film ‘Kunwara Baap’ (1942).
The first reaction after reading the title of the film will be Mehmood’s film of 1974 having the same title. But rest assured today’s film was made in 1942 and had a different story. Mehmood’s film was based on an incurable disease – Polio, suffered by a child and it had a touch of pathos, creating sympathy and allied feelings. But ‘Kunwara Baap’ of 1942 was a fun film.
