“Holiday in Bombay” (1963) is a movie which is barely known to most Hindi movie enthusiasts today. Same is the case for the music of this movie. But when one begins to look at the songs of this movie, one is left amazed. How can a movie full of such songs be so obscure. This movie should be known among music lovers at least for its songs if for nothing else.

These days we are digging up the songs of N Datta and we are discovering one forgotten gem after another. These are songs that may not have come to the notice of many music lovers because these songs, along with the movie, were forgotten with time. Do not know if the director was running out of ideas, but this song appears to be a duplicate in some ways. The film is Baadhsah from 1964. Two songs from this film are already posted. With reference to the song “Ae Jee Mein Ne Kahaa Suniye To Zaraa” – when I compare these two songs, they seem to be very similar in intent and also in terms of the players on whom this is picturized. The earlier posted song is also performed on screen by this actress, Kumari Rani, trying to stop and annoyed looking Dara Singh from leaving her company. The scenario is repeated in this song also. Once again, the song is performed by Kumari Rani. Dara Singh is playing the offended gentleman, and the lady love is trying to stop him from leaving. In this case, the one additional characteristic stands out – apparently the lady knows some kind of magic, for she disappears and reappears a few times during the performance of this song.

If I were to write that the ‘M’ in Mukesh stands for ‘Magic’, I am sure there will be very few who would disagree. This song – another wonderful duet by Mukesh and Asha Bhosle, is a magic colored with these two voices. I find that there are 18 songs listed under ‘Song excluded from movie’ category in this blog. Although the sample is not representative one to come to a definite conclusion, it is interesting to note that O P Nayyar leads in this category with 5 songs followed by Madan Mohan(4 songs), S D Burman (3 songs) and Naushad(2 songs). Sajjad Hussain, Husnalal Bhagatram, Bulo C Rani and Roshan have one song each in this category.

“Where have all the loris (lullabies) gone from the contemporary Hindi films?’ This question haunts me as I don’t find lori songs in the present day Hindi films unless I have missed them. Alternatively I may have heard them but did not get the feel of a lori song. In a way, it is a reflection on our present generation where the lori songs as a soothing device on kids for putting them to sleep early has been almost forgotten. I find that at least in the metropolis, most parents have no time to sing a 3-minute lori to put their kids to sleep.
