Shakespeare’s plays have been one of the important sources for adapting them in Hindi films since the beginning of the Indian film industry in 1913. However, since very few films produced and released during the silent film era survived, it is difficult to say how many silent films were based on Shakespeare’s plays. A research paper on Shakespeare on Screen by Dr. Joseph Koyippally has identified 8 silent films based on Shakespeare’s plays that were released between 1923-30.

Today’s song is from a folk tale based film ‘Naulakha Haar’ (1953).
The film was inspired by the famous folk tale of Rajasthan about the love story of Alha-Udal, with the background of 2 warring kingdoms. A lot of cinematic liberty is taken while writing the film story, in order to make the film appealing to more types of audience. Films on famous folk tales are not uncommon in the Hindi film industry. In fact they are a great source of imagination to form hundreds of stories, with desirable changes in the script. Hindi film makers have been making films on such traditional folk stories from all over India. When they exhausted such stories they turned to stories from Arabia and Europe too, besides our own Mythology and Puranas. Hullo Atuldom
“Lakshmi” (1982) which was directed by B. S. Thapa; produced by Raja Desai & Raja Roy.
The story was revolving around Reena Roy’s character -Lakshmi; Raj Babbar played her husband Vijay Singh & son Ajay Singh. Ranjeet played a pimp who has a change of heart & emotion when Lakshmi addresses him as ‘Bhaiyya’ & pleads him to help her keep herself ‘GANGA KI TARAH PAVITRA’ inspite of being a courtesan. Nadira played the owner of the ‘Kotha’ where Lakshmi takes refuge in her bid to escape goons. She also has a change of thinking & heart when she sees Ranjeet standing up for Lakshmi when Kadar Khan (in a guest appearance)-playing a daku- tries to molest her. Nadira eventually takes sanyaas but not before seeing Lakshmi give birth to her daughter (she was pregnant with her second child when she had landed at the kotha)

The movie had Jairaj, Chitra, Sherry, Sheikh, Mohammad Ali Steelman, Kasim, Mohmmad Ghori, Nanak Singh, Akram, Mohammad, Rafiq, Baburao Pahalwan, with Tun Tun, Mohna, Jilani, Arvind Kumar, Malik, Maqbool, Joshibala, Mohan Modi, Gope Raj, Pal Sharma etc in it. It had guest appearances by Azad, Sundar, Ram Rasila, and Indira Bansal. In addition, the movie had wrestlers King Kong, J.D. Goldstein, and wonders Apeman, Gorilla, Jin, Flying Horse, and Mahal. A ‘Mermaid’ fish (16 ft long) is also listed by HFGK in the cast of the movie.

‘Insaaf Kaa Mandir’ (1969) was produced by Sherbahadur Singh and Jagdish Singh and was written and directed by BR Ishara. The cast includes Sanjeev Kumar, Snehlata, Nadira, Asit Sen, Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Tarun Bose, Manmohan Krishna, Sapru, Laxmi Chhaya, Aruna Irani, Bela Bose, Mohan Sherry, Kanu Roy etc. This was BR Ishara’s debut film as a full-fledged director. After coming to Mumbai, it took him almost 2 decades to direct his first film. But it was not that he had run away from his village to Mumbai to make a career in films. It was, what he called the ‘torturous nature’ of his uncle which drove him to Mumbai where he was prepared to grab any work including domestic servant and waiter for sustenance.

“Hamlet”(1954) was produced and directed by Kishore Sahu for Hindustan Chitra Bombay. As is clear from the title, this story was written by William Shakespeare. All sites on internet mentions Pradeep Kuamr and Mala Sinha as the actors, but HFGK has a whole list of actors in this movie. The movie had Kishore Sahu, Mala Sinha, Venus Bannerjee, Hiralal,S Nazeer, Kamnaljeet, Jankidas, Srinath, Nirdoshi, Rajan Kapoor, Pal Sharma, Baby Sheela, Master Ratan, Jagdeesh Kamal, Harun, Agha Miraz, Fazal Khan, Avtar Singh etc in it. There was no Pradeep Kumar. One wonders how online sites got their details that this movie had Pradeep Kumar in it.
