A man with a spiritual bend of mind would believe that his destiny was pre-planned even before he was born. There are others who believe that they can mold their own destiny. Shailendra was one of those who seemed to have believed that he could be master of his own destiny. That he was a member of Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) indicates what destiny he had chosen for himself. He had taken up the task of awakening the Indian masses on their rights and duties in the background of post-independent India. It was therefore no surprise when he spurned Raj Kapoor of his offer of taking his inspirational song for the film Aag (1948) telling him that his poems were not for sale. However, Raj Kapoor left his address with him in case he had a change of mind.

GEMS FROM THE MIGRATORS…song no. 5

So far, I have done 16 series here. This is the 17th series. Writing for a series is not an easy job.It not only requires lot of spade work, but also requires a continuous flow, avoiding a long gap between 2 posts, lest the tempo is lost. When I start a series, I am always in lot of tension till it is completed successfully. Every series is a new beginning for me. In spite of all this (and the ensuing allegations of ” neglect ” from the family ) I enjoy doing this work. There are many Blogs on internet which do posts on theme like ” Cycle songs”, Motor songs” or Sawan songs etc. I have always felt that Atul ji’s Blog is not an ordinary one and it must have real specially made exclusive topics for series I could do these posts, because Atul ji has always helped me with the Lyrics and has encouraged me always. Thanks Atul ji.

Some songs do this to you. You may be reading the mukhdaa, off and on, for days, or even months. And still it does not ring a bell anywhere. The memory of that song is so well buried under layers and layers of other things that merely the words do not mean anything. But put it on the player and let the sound come to you. The connect is immediate, and suddenly the miles thick layer of forgetfulness evaporates in one blink of the eye. You will immediately want to get up, and just move – OMG, this is the song. . . after so many years. . . literally in my face for oh so long . . . goodness. And if the song is as full of delight as this one, you will not be able to control the urge to dance along, or may be just tap your feet, or maybe just drum with your fingers, and surely you will want to sing along. And all the while, thanking whoever makes such things happen, that you have re-discovered this song. Like meeting a very very dear friend, unexpectedly, after years of being away. Isn’t that feeling. . . just simply absolutely fantastic.

BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-7)
—————————————

One advantage of seeing religious films was that it increased your knowledge of mythology and the Puranas. Though there was a common principle highlighted( Satyamev Jayate or the victory of Good over Bad ), every story’s treatment and content used to be different. With our Holy books overflowing with stories involving all types of Gods, Godesses and Bhakts, film producers must have never fallen short of stories. Famous and well known studios like Bombay Talkies, Sagar, Mohan, Prakash, Prabhat, Wadia or Filmistan stuck to popular and traditional stories like Satyavan Savitri, Bhakta Dhruv, Shri Ram or Shrikrishna. other production companies tried comparatively less known, unknown or even Hybrid stories (Mythological base but treated in filmy style) to make films.

Today we remember Feroze Nizami on the anniversary of his passing away. His familiar image in the minds of many people it that of a music director and composer. There are fabulous creations that stand testimony to his talents as a master of music. What is lesser known is the fact that Feroze Nizami Sb was a multi faceted and a multi talented personality. He was an exceptional singer himself, in the mold of classical singing. He was also a writer, and an acknowledged expert and teacher of music. His book, ‘Asraar e Mauseeqi’, a definitive work on classical music written in Urdu, remained a standard textbook on the subject in Punjab University (Lahore) for many decades. He was a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines, writing research papers and articles on music. In addition, he was very learned in the field of Sufi literature. Another book by him, ‘Sar-chasma e Hayaat’, is a famous and oft referred work on this subject. He was well learned in the fields of Homoeopathy, Philosophy, and yes, Hindu religion.

This article is the 8900th song post in the blog.

Two years have passed. Well, almost, just about two weeks short. It was another cool night of November that I was busy typing the write up for the 5000th song on this blog. There was much exhilaration and excitement that the 5000th milestone was reached. There were some very cautious and guarded comments, pointing towards the 10,000th song. But at that time, although the 5000th was already capped, the 10,000th still seemed daunting and unthinkable. That was two years ago.
