Today’s song is from the film Lehren-1953. It was made by ” New Sai Productions” Bombay. It was a film production company floated by C.Ramchandra, his close friend actor Omprakash and Lata Mangeshkar. They produced Jhanjhar-1953, Leharen-1953 and Duniya gol hai-1955 ( directed by Omprakash himself.) These films were neither successful nor their music became popular.
When the film Jhanjhar-1953 was about to be released, C. Ramchandra and Lata Mangeshkar went to Punjab to attend the release function of the film. In this visit, Lata Mangeshkar spoke to singer Nurjehan in Pakistan, from her hotel room telephone and they decided to meet each other. Accordingly Lata and Nurjehan met on the “No Man’s Land” between the Indo-Pak border. They embraced each other and spent a lot of time together.
Another noteworthy event happened when the film Jhanjhar was in the making. At that time C.Ramchandra, under a loose contract with Filmistan, was also giving music to Filmistan’s ” Anarkali’. Directors in Filmistan knew that he was also making his own film Jhanjhar and they suspected that he may be neglecting music of Anarkali at the cost of Jhanjhar. He was sent a legal notice accusing him of this. However, Jhanjhar released first, flopped and then Anarkali was released. Anarkali music became a superhit and Jhanjhar was nowhere. The legal case was happily dropped and C Ramchandra was also awarded a gift from Filmistan for its music !
Film Lehren-1953 was directed by H. S.Rawail and the 10 songs of the film were written by Rajendra krishna. Rajendra Krishna (6-6-1919 to 23-9-1987. Songs 1671 for 269 films) and C.Ramchandra were very good friends. They came together from C. Ramchandra[‘s film Patanga-1949. Together they worked in 52 films. However, in 1958 this friendship broke up. The story is….in 1958 C.Ramchandra was called to Madras by producer S.S.Vasan of Gemini Films. He was offered the film Raaj Tilak for music. This was a remake of Vasan’s hit Tamil film ” Vanjikottai Valiban”. A Telugu remake was also on cards and C.Ramchandra was to give music to Hindi and Telugu versions. He had already given music to the Tamil original. He gladly accepted and wanted to call Rajendra krishna to write the songs. To his shock, Vasan objected to calling Rajendra krishna. Vasan was angry at him because he had written songs for his competitor AVM’s 2 films Bhai Bhai-1956 and Bhabhi-1957. Both films’ songs were popular and hits also. Vasan asked Ramchandra to suggest some other name. He suggested P.L.Santoshi and it was accepted. The music was completed for Raaj Tilak-1958.
C.Ramchandra went back to Bombay and started making songs for the film Amardeep along with Rajendra krishna. After the music was set, Rajendra Krishna came to know that C.Ramchandra had replaced him with Santoshi for a South film. He was enraged and broke their partnership. Rajendra krishna was also popular in South and he started suggesting the Southern producers names of Chitragupta and Ravi as Music Directors. C. Ramchandra stopped getting any films from Madras. At that time even Lata left him after recording 2 songs of the film Amardeep-1958. C.Ramchandra’s bad period had begun…..
The cast of the film Lehren-1953 was Shyama, Kishore Kumar, Shakuntala, Bipin Gupta, Iftikhar, Sunder, Johnny Walker, Leela Mishra and others. In this film, Raj kapoor was a Guest Artiste. Also Omprakash’s brother Pachhi did a small role in this film. Later Pachhi became a big Producer of Hindi films himself. In this film 6 singers were used for 10 songs. The singers were Mohd. Rafi, Kishore kumar, Hiemant kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Shamshad Begum and Sunder. Today’s fun song is sung by Mohd. Rafi and Sunder. To most readers Sunder was a comedian, but Sunder Singh was a Hero in his early films and sang many songs in his own films.
For a long time,I was searching for information on comedian Sunder. I got hold of a 2 page detailed article on Sunder, but it was in Punjabi- which I could not read or use. I found a small paragraph on Sunder in Sanjit Narvekar ji’s book ” Eena Meena Deeka”. Lastly, I requested Harish Raghuwanshi ji for help. Despite his failing health, he promptly sent me articles in Hindi, English and Gujarati, on Sunder. He is such a helpful person. May God give him a healthy life.
Sunder Singh aka Sunder was born in Sialkot, Punjab on 10th August 1916. His father was working in Madon Theatres, Calcutta. Sunder also started working there. Initially, for a long period,he did Girl’s roles. Once his work was seen by H.S.Rawail (Director in later life). He was quite impressed. Later Rawail started working with R.N.Vaidya as his assistant in direction.Meanwhile Sunder started working in Talkie films. His first film, where he was credited, was ” Na hone wali baat”-38. Before that, Rawail and Vaidya were preparing to make the film Banke Sipahi-37.Rawail recommended Sunder and Vaidya gave him an uncredited small role in that film.
Sunder and Rawail became good friends and started staying in one flat in Calcutta. After a few films here, they both went to Lahore and Sunder got the Hero’s role in the film ” Shukriya”-44. There were 4 Heroines in the film- Ramola, Rooplekha, Manorama and Raksha. Sunder’s role in this film was that of a young man from a village and Ramola was from a City. Sunder’s one song from this film-‘ Nayanon ke teer chala gayee ek shehar ki laundiya’ became very popular all over India, However the song was banned in Punjab due to its lyrics. After this they both came back to Calcutta.
His next film was Albeli-45, in which too there were 4 Heroines- Ramola, Rooplekha, Manorama and Usha. In the 40’s , Sunder acted in many films like Arabian Nights, Baap, Shabri, Chandrashekhar, Ek aurat, Grihalaxmi, Lottery, Samapti, Jhoothi kasme, Savyasachi, Do baaten, Shadi ke baad, Bawra, Khiladi, Nai Bhabhi etc. In Calcutta, Sunder got married to a girl from his community. Rawail left for Bombay. After a few months, Sunder also returned to Bombay.
Rawail was very happy to get him back and gave him roles in almost all of his films. Not only Rawail, but also J.Om Prakash, Mohan Kumar, Lekhraj Bhakri, Manoj kumar etc gave him roles in all their films and he became a busy actor. He was at one time, in great demand. He was quite popular due to his nature. In the decade of 50’s he did 88 films, which increased in the 60s and 70s. In the 80s however films came haltingly.
From singing Hero, he became a Junior artiste( extra), in presence of the new crop of actors. The role of comedians was on decline, as Heroes like Amitabh and others did comedy scenes themselves. His health started troubling him. His last film was probably Bahurani-89. He became ill for a long time and finally died on 5-3-1992. Sunder acted in 436 films. He was a good singer and sang his own songs in early cinemas. In all, Sunder sang 40 songs in 25 films. ( Thanks to Harish Raghuwanshi ji for material for adaptation.)
The story of the film Lehren-1953 was….The story of Lehren-53 revolves around 3 characters. One Hero and 2 Heroines. Kishore loves Shakuntala and treats Shyama sympathetically because she had lost her parents. She stays with her uncle omprakash. Shyama however takes Kishore’s sympathy as his love for her. Even his uncle and Kishore’s best friend Sunder think that way. This happens because Kishore feels too shy to express his love for Shakuntala. This situation becomes very embarrassing for Kishore, especially as he is pushed to marry Shyama. This part of the story is upto Interval.
After Interval, Kishore tries very hard to get out of this tricky situation and succeeds by first telling the truth to Sunder and then to uncle Omprakash. They make a plan so that Shyama overhears Kishore’s love dialogues to Shakuntala. But this has an opposite effect. Shyama thinks that Kishore has played a double game with both the girls.
At the end, all misunderstandings are cleared( for which Shakuntala had to pretend her suicide and sacrifice to allow Shyama and Kishore to get married). Shyama steps back and Kishore and Shakuntala are married.
Let us now enjoy the comedy song, by Rafi and Sunder Singh.

Hullo Atuldom
“Holi kab hai? kab hai holi? kab? kab?” – these are the famous lines mouthed by the most dreaded daaku of Ramgarh. He was wanted ‘dead or alive’ and carried a reward of ‘pachhas hazaar’ on his head. And from his den he declared rather pompously “Yahan se pachhas pachhas kos door gaon mein … jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, toh maa kehti hai bete so ja … so ja nahi to Gabbar Singh aa jayega”. With the most simple and not-so-profound dialogues like ‘Kitne Aadmi The’, ‘Jo Darr Gaya Samjho Marr Gaya’ and ‘Tera kya hoga Kalia’, Gabbar Singh alias Amjad Khan had arrived on the Bollywood scene, giving life to one of the most celebrated and iconic characters in Hindi cinema.
Born in undivided India’s Peshawar in 1940, he was the first child of actor Jayant (Zakaria Khan). He was a bright student who had a Masters in Philosophy and loved to read English poets like Keats and Wordsworth and could debate on political theories or philosophies of Plato, Socrates and even Dr. Radhakrishnan. After his M.Phil he ventured on to the world of theatre to give a chance to his passion of acting that he had inherited from his father. That is where he was spotted by the writer duo Salim-Javed who recommended him to Ramesh Sippy and rest of the story is well known to all the fans of this wonderful actor.
That was 1975. Post ‘Sholay’ Amjad Khan went on to live a number of memorable characters on celluloid. Can anyone forget the risk-taking best friend Bishan of Kishan (Amitabh) in ‘Yaarana’, or the funny policeman of Kumar Gaurav’s debut ‘Love Story’. He was unforgettable as Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’. What versatility. He was happy that his directors and writers saw more than a villain or a daaku in him and thanked them for not typecasting him else, we would never have seen his comic timing and his mastery in emoting any kind of role.
Today it is 28 years since his passing and we have a song that shows him trying to shake a leg with Mithun. The song is penned by Farooq Kaiser and set to tune by Bappi Lahiri. It is from the 1985 release ‘Maa Kasam’ which was directed by Shibu Mitra & had a cast of Mithun, Amjad Khan, Ranjeet, Divya Rana, Sushma Seth and Pran. It was a typical masala movie complete with dances where the lead actors are in disguise etc.
I stumbled on this song recently and filed it away to post it in remembrance of Amjad Khan. It is sung by Mohd Aziz, Vijay Benedict and Parvati Khan. We also have Kalpana Iyer as part of the group dance. We can also see Guddi Maruti and Sundar present in this clip. Just to know why everyone is dressed in tribal outfits which the Red Indians will claim as their traditional wear I need to see this movie.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 23
————————————————
On 28th March of 2009, six songs had made their appearance on the blog. The songs and the films represented are listed below.
Man Darpan Hai | Dushman | 1939 |
Mitti Se Khelte Ho | Patita | 1953 |
Sach Kahta Hoon Bahut Haseen Ho | Jaali Note | 1960 |
Chanda Re Mori Patiyaan Le Jaa | Banjaarin | 1960 |
Baalamwa Bolo Na Bolo Na | Picnic | 1966 |
Yoon Na Sharmaa Phailaade Apni Gori Gori Baanhen | Parwaana | 1971 |
Of these six films, ‘Dushman’ (1939), ‘Patita’ (1953), ‘Jaali Note’ (1960), ‘Picnic’ (1966) and ‘Parwaana’ (1971) have been yippeee’d by now. The 1960 film ‘Banjaarin’ remains. This film has eight songs in all. Three songs have been showcased here. Today, we bring on the fourth song, on the 10th anniversary of this film’s debut here.
‘Banjaarin’ is produced by Ratan, under the banner of Ratan Pictures, Bombay. The film is a costume drama, directed by Jaswant Jhaveri. The list of actors reads like Kanchan Kamini, Manhar Desai, Lalita Kumari, Sundar, Indira Bansal, Dalpat, Pal Sharma, Neelu, Shri Bhagwan, Bela, TN Sinha, Saroj, Murari, Paro, Prayag, Rehana, Paulson, Geeta, Chetan Kumar, Malika, Sheela R, CH Singh, Shekhar Purohit, Shriram, and S Chaddha.
The eight songs of this film are all penned by Pt Madhur. The music is by Pardesi – a lesser known artist whose name appears as music director for maybe 4 or 5 films only. The singing voice in this song is Geeta Dutt.
The video clip of this song is available. The clip is somewhat dim, and hence much details or even identification of artists on screen is not very feasible. The song is overlapped with a lot of other action in the film. The song itself seems to be a club dance song, or maybe a villain’s den song. There are a number of artists, but I am able to recognize only Sunder. I am not able to identify the main dancer in this song. Is that Sheela Ramani? I am not sure. I would request our more knowledgeable readers to please help with identification of artists.
The song is constructed well. I am hearing it for the first time today. It sure has an interesting rhythm and beat to it, and it has been rendered by Geeta Dutt with the customary zest. Listen and enjoy.
[PS: I have not been able to decipher two words in the first stanza. I request other folks to please help insert the correct words.]

ओ ओ ओ

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 9
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
‘ख’ – खुश कर दिया तूने मेरे रामा
Yes, surely the Almighty God sent you here amongst us, only for singing and to add to the music on this earth. And what a wonderful treasure you have bequeathed to the lesser mortals of this earth. We shall always be indebted for this tremendous legacy you gave us.
Continuing with Rafi Sb’s duet series after a gap of – goodness, seventy two days. Wow. Anyway, back again with another rollicking duet, this time accompanied by Lata Mangeshkar.
And rollicking is just the word. The setting is Punjabi, the performance is a Punjabi Bhangra dance, and the occasion – one of the most awaited and the most celebrated in Indian families – birth of a male child.
The film is ‘Jeet’ from 1972. The main performers in this group dance song are Randhir Kapoor and Babita. The film being released in 1972, would have been in the making in 1971, the year that this lead pair tied the knot and became a real life couple. Ah but that story for another occasion, another post. Today, we are moving ahead with the duet series of Rafi Sb, getting to the 10th episode in this series, which promises to be long – going thru the entire Devnagri alphabet.
The film is produced under the banner of Babu Movies Combine, and is directed by A Subbarao. Besides the lead pair mentioned above, the other players in the star cast include Rajendra Nath, Rupesh Kumar, Jatin, Nana Palsikar, Anwar Hussain, Jeevan, Sundar, Hari Shivdasani, Dada Mirasi, Keshav Rana, Master Shahid, Heena Kausar, Sanjana, Sulochana Latakar, Manorama, Dulari, and Baby Sudha etc.
The film has six songs, three of which are already showcased on our blog. Goodness, that was 2009, all three songs posted so far. After a gap of nine years, we once again get an opportunity to revisit this film – today’s being the fourth song posted. All songs are written by Anand Bakshi. Music direction is by the duo of Laxmikant Pyaarelal.
On screen, we see a homely set of a village lane with houses lined up close to each other. Randhir and Babita are leading the bhangra dance event, with Sunder also part of the male dance group. In between, we see Dulari holding a baby (well, not looking too much new born, but oh well 🙂 ). There is another lady sitting next to her. I am guessing that she is Sanjana. I request other more knowledgeable readers and friends to please confirm or correct this guess. As per Prakash ji, the other lady is Heena Kausar. Plus, one of the dancers accompanying Babita is Sheela Ramchandran.
The event and the celebration is about the new born child, but quite apparently, the lead pair is spending more lines trying to woo each other and play the romantic love birds. Well in fact, it is just the mukhda lines that talk about the child birth celebrations. The entire verse set for both antaraas is just the romancing between the hero and the heroine. Quite a ‘filmi’ thing, right?
Enjoy this lively bhangra dance song; and I hope to speed up things on this series, let us see. 😉

‘Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ (1971) is different from the serial ‘Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ which came a long time after the movie. The movie was an all-round entertainer. We would not get anything less in a movie where Om Prakash heads the cast and the hero (Sanjay Khan in this case) plays a second fiddle to Om Prakash and Jagdeep. Plus, when the mirch-masalas Lalita Pawar and Shashikala spice up the whole setup, it is but natural that the lead cast (Sanjay Khan and Leena Chandavarkar) become secondary – their presence being needed for the romantic interludes.
I must confess I was unaware of this movie till a few years back – till 2014 to be exact. I chanced upon it on one of the umpteen satellite channels. The title made me sit through what turned out to be an enjoyable family- entertainer (as they used to be called back then) which didn’t make you start crying halfway through. A family-entertainer essentially was one which one could see with the entire family and the viewer will be preached about how to maintain family relationships and a few ladies in the audience will be seen crying into their hankies. This movie was not like that.
So, coming to today’s song we have Om Prakash playing a Sadhu Baba and Sanjay and Jagdeep are his chelaas (I think it means students) with Sunder playing an assistant. In the movie Sanjay is Om Prakash’s son, Sunder – his servant and Jagdeep is Sanjay’s saala (brother-in-law). The song has Shashikala and Lalitha Pawar as ladies who have come with queries to the “antaryaami baba”. Through the song we get a gist of the movie. The song is in the voice of Manna Dey written by Rajendra Krishan, with music composed by RD Burman.
One song from this movie was discussed in 2016 by our Avinashji. On the occasion of Om Prakash’s passing away anniversary today; we shall see him the way he was largely-loved by the public. It is 20 years since he passed away.
In those days we used to live in Chembur, Bombay (not yet Mumbai then) and both Om Prakash and Ashok Kumar lived not very far from where we were. Those were the days when it was still cable TV and not satellite TV. And what did the cable operator providing service to our apartment do, he just stopped service for the day and put up a notice on black card— to enable the public in the area to attend the funeral of our beloved “jija ji” (as Om Prakash’s character was in “’Chupke Chupke”) we are suspending our service for a day. That was how much he was loved.
We can remember so many of his memorable characters – starting from ‘Guddi’ (1971) (that is where I noticed him first) to all his characters in Hrishikesh Mukherjee movies, to ‘Ghar Ho To Aisa’ (1990) (that is the last time I saw him in a movie). Of course, his career spanned 42 years and starting from movies made in Lahore in 1942 to “Ghar Ki Izzat” in 1994 he was a co star to every actor – big or small- and gave his best no matter the size of the role as in ‘Purab Aur Paschim’ (1970).
Thinking of Jija ji today on his anniversary

Lyrics
baaba-leeka
hey..ey
suno re saadho ye sansaaram
ultam paltam ho gaya
kahaan ki bhakti
pooja paatham
thokam thaakam ho gaya
bam bam leharey bam bam

dekho re dekho
dekho re saadho
kalyug ki naari ka namoona
apni hi santaan ko is ne
kas ke lagaaya kaisa choona
apni bahu ko bete se apne
sau gaj door sulaya
prabhu kripa se
phir bhi is ne
chaand sa pota paaya
bolo
bam bam leharey bam bam
phir se
bam bam leharey bam bam
dhanya hai saadho
ye devi bhi
chidiya jaisi bholi bhali
rang birange pankh hai iske
chonch magar hai kaali kaali
apni boodhi saas ko is ne
ghar se maar bhagaaya
jab ye saas bani to is ko
bahu ne mazaa chakhaya
ho bolo
bam bam leharey bam bam
phir se

Kaun hai wo kaun mujhe jisne jagaaya

We in this blog had two new resolutions and I had decided to stick to them as long as I can. One was to introduce a “new” movie daily and another was to to close the account of another movie by YIPPying it.
We are in may 2017, and both these resolutions have finally seen breaks. For instance, there was no YIPPEE song on 13 may 2017, a day that had only one post, a post that introduced a “new” song. The string on YIPPEE posts was in fact broken a few days earlier on 6 may itself when I posted a song that I thought was YIPPYing its movie but I was wrong. The “new” post string had got broken a while ago.

GEMS FROM THE MIGRATORS…song no. 5
—————————————
So far, I have done 16 series here. This is the 17th series. Writing for a series is not an easy job.It not only requires lot of spade work, but also requires a continuous flow, avoiding a long gap between 2 posts, lest the tempo is lost. When I start a series, I am always in lot of tension till it is completed successfully. Every series is a new beginning for me. In spite of all this (and the ensuing allegations of ” neglect ” from the family ) I enjoy doing this work. There are many Blogs on internet which do posts on theme like ” Cycle songs”, Motor songs” or Sawan songs etc. I have always felt that Atul ji’s Blog is not an ordinary one and it must have real specially made exclusive topics for series I could do these posts, because Atul ji has always helped me with the Lyrics and has encouraged me always. Thanks Atul ji.
