Regulars may have noticed that I have discussed lots of Suraiyya songs in the recent past and now we have reached close to her total tally of HFM songs that she sang. In my previous writeup on Suraiyya, I had given some figures about her songs. Here, in this writeup, I give the findings of my research on Suraiyya songs.

This article is the 10200th song post in the blog.
Posts like this come really once in a while. I would like to call them million dollar posts. Or rather ‘laakh rupaye ki baat (post)’ – because ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindusatni’. 🙂 🙂
Congratulations to all fellow band-wagoneers and welcome to the next century milestone. We are Ten Thousand and Two Hundredth post today. And the march continues. Generally, when we come to century posts, we have celebrations connected to it. Almost always, we have at least one anniversary that we connect with a century post, or we have a certain artist also complete a century or a multi century individual milestone along with the blog century milestone. Occasionally we have a double celebration connected together, which actually makes three milestones – the blog century post, and two other important celebrations – combinations of artist anniversaries and / or artist century posts.

When I was growing up in late 1960s and the whole of 1970s, I was familiar with the then current generation singers like Kishore Kumar, Lata, Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Mukesh etc. My exposure to old generation singers was initially through the “puraani filmon ke geet” programme of Radio Ceylon (later renamed SLBC) from 7-30 to 8 AM. It is not that I consciously listened to this programme. On a typical morning, one of the elders in the home (who was in the position of “authority” to operate the radio would switch on the radio, and if I was lucky then the radio station tuned would be Radio Ceylon. The early morning programme was instrumental music where tunes of Hindi movie songs, played by Enoch Daniels were broadcast. I loved this programme because listening to instrumentals of current songs was a new and thrilling experience for me. This programme would then be followed by programmes where old songs were played and I was not interested in them. I would wait for 8 AM, when the last song of “Puraani filmon ke geet” would be sung by K L Saigal and then the “Aap hi ke geet” farmaishi programme would start, much to the glee of farmaish senders from Jhumri Tilaiyya, Ganj Basoda, Yavatmal, Rajnandgaaon etc. 🙂

Ab to ye sab chhote chhote stations lagenge. Now these milestones will seem to be small stations on a long route train. 🙂 🙂
But nonetheless, these smaller stops have a significant role to play. In that they make possible the bigger milestones. After having done the 10K milestone, now the century milestones will seem like small cup cakes. Maybe the next thing of important enthusiasm will be the 11 thousandth post. Ah but that is still nine hundred songs away. And as soon as I think of the 11 thousandth post, my mind gets enamored by a subsequent post number that seems very magical – eleven thousand one hundred and eleven – 11111. Now that is surely going to invoke a lot of interest I am sure. That one will be the first number of its kind to appear on this blog. I mean, in five digit size.

The Many Colors of Love #20 – The Gambles of Love
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
And so wrote the scribe
And they often say, the matters of heart are a gamble of life. The game of love is very exacting. And the insistence of the game-master is that no wager is big enough in this game of love. The game is played with odds which at times will compel you to bet everything in an all or nothing deal.
This post turns out to be special. Along with the love series special on the ‘Gambles of Love’, we are also making another celebration that combines surprise with anniversary and milestone. Read on, and you will find out.

The pen whose first creations mesmerized everyone with the magic of “Mera Sunder Sapna Beet Gayaa” and “Yaad Karoge Yaad Karoge Ik Din Humko Yaad Karoge”. A dream debut that most artists just think about. He was introduced to Shashadhar Mukherjee, then still with Filmistan, and got the assignment to write for the 1947 film ‘Do Bhai’. Sachin Da took the words and wove a musical magic around them, and gave them to the voice of Geeta Rai (later Geeta Dutt). It need not even be mentioned that the rest is history.
Remembering Raja Mehdi Ali Khan on the anniversary of his passing away (on 29th July). And we couple the remembrance with a celebration – reaching the 200 songs milestone on our blog.

The mention of this name brings to mind, the mindless sidelining and disregard of talent that was ever the most gifted and capable. But that is life – the unfortunate unkindness it metes out to some people is beyond our intelligence to understand. Comes to mind the lines of Meera Bai’s bhajan –
Koel Kar Dini Kaali
Santo, Karman Ki Gati Nyaari
That the Koel bird is endowed with such a beautiful voice that is incomparable, but the same Maker also made it black and ugly, such are the vagaries of destiny.

The pen that wrote the immensely soothing verses of “Haath Seene Pe Jo Rakh Do To Qaraar Aa Jaaye” (‘Mirza Sahibaan’, 1947), is the same pen that also produced such immensely fun and popular iconic number like “Laara Lappa Laara Lappa Laai Rakhdaa” (‘Ek Thi Ladki’, 1949) with music director Vinod, and such a comely and alluring blockbusters like “Huzoor e Waala, Jo Ho Ijaazat”(‘Ye Raat Phir Na Aayegi’, 1966), created with OP Nayyar.

Sometimes the temptation to write an article about an artist is to start with a sampler of the fabulous, memorable songs by him/her, to represent the variety, the flavor and the endearing memories that artist has created as a legacy and a treasure presented for generations to enjoy. But when one is writing about an artist of the stature of Rafi, or Lata, or Naushad, giving even an extended sampler for such artists is like lighting a lamp in bright sunlight (literally ‘suraj ko diya dikhana’). There are a few artists of such eminence that need no introductions through a sampler list of their songs. A name that definitely belongs to this category is Majrooh Sb.
Remembering Majrooh Sultanpuri on the anniversary of his passing away today (24th May).

It is with mixed emotions that I write this post.
No, it’s not quite what you’re thinking. Usually “mixed emotions” involve an element of happiness, tempered with sadness. Like parents sending their son or daughter abroad for higher studies. On one hand, they’re happy for their child’s future, on the other there’s an element of sadness that they will be separated by a considerable amount of distance and time.
