The sounds of restlessness coming from a restive heart. A voice that exists in a multitude of colors and flavors and moods. A voice that has entertained the listeners for the better part of four decades. A voice that has left an indelible stamp on the history of Hindi Cinema and Hindi Film Music. A voice that holds the trademark on the ultimate songs of fun that are completely and irrefutably non-replicable, priceless gems of yodeling, mimicry and voice modulation. A voice that became the alter-ego of many a successful careers, so much so that in the 70s and 80s, the lead male actors would not consider their careers and performances complete unless this voice was in the background. Even thespian Dilip Kumar, after having spent three decades in the industry, eventually performed on screen, with this voice behind him (‘Sagina’, 1974). A voice that was nominated 27 times for Filmfare awards for best male singer, in a span of just 16 years (1970 to 1986), winning it eight times in the process. A voice whose power of influence simply could not be matched, especially during the peak years in the 1970s and 80s.

Earlier today, Atul informed me that we are now closing in on 1400 songs for Asha Bhosle on the blog and maybe I’d like to do a write-up for her 1400th?
To date, I have never ever refused a request from Atul to do a write-up – and today was no exception. I immediately said “Sure”. For it is not just a pleasure, but also an honour, to do a write-up here on this blog. And if I ever have to say “no, sorry” to Atul, it would only be because of genuine constraints, never because of any other reason.
Thankfully that day hasn’t come yet – and hopefully it will not. Anything I can do to contribute to this blog in any capacity, I’d be happy to do.

“Aadhi Raat Ke Baad” (1965) was produced by T C Dewan and directed by Naanbhai Bhatt under the banner of Movie Fare productions. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Ragini, Sailesh Kumar, Agha, Sajjan, Ulhas, Murad, Jankidass, Rajan Haksar, Padma Chawhan, Naina, Balam, Randhir, Kundan, Majnu, Mohan Lal etc in it.

Truly, a man for all seasons, and a voice for all reasons. A person like him comes maybe once in a millennia. And a voice like his is probably a unique manifestation of God’s own will, maybe once in the sustenance of an entire creation. It seems as if the poet Iqbaal wrote his famous couplet for him, and him alone.

People who are into watching Hindi movies must have noticed that the lead actors do not seem to do anything for their livelihood in Hindi movies. The hero in these movies is seen wooing the leading lady, first by singing a teasing song, then a romantic song. Then there would be a separation song, a misunderstanding song, a reconciliation song etc. Thinking about his/her love interest appears to be the full time job with Hindi movie lead actors which certainly cannot be one’s means of livelihood unless their names happen to be Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, who actually earned their livelihood by this method.

Mukesh, a name synonymous with the sounds of the soul, a name the evokes memories of music that wouldn’t have been possible, but for him, a name that sits so simply and comfortably within the strands and threads of a thousand songs that have been blessed with the touch of this expressive and poignant voice. I have been dithering for the last two days on the issue of which song post to send, as my 100th post. Now that I have decided on a song which is old enough and a Rafi solo, and melodious and touching as I wanted just such a song for this occasion. For some reason I have suddenly become tongue tied, or key board tied. Not that key boards ever get tied up like our human minds or tongues. But they do give us trouble, whenever we treat them badly. Only last week, it suffered a blow, with a steel bowl. And the key ‘ e ‘ came loose. It just wouldn’t stick in its place, I had all sorts of trouble in completing the last write up. Ideally I should have tried to complete the write up without using ‘e’. It is possible, as I read a paragraph on facebook, completely devoid of the alphabet ‘e’. Maybe next time this sort of thing happens, with a little used alphabet”s key than, it should be worth trying.
