Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Insaaf huaa duniya se ae yaar safaachat

Posted on: July 23, 2013

People who are into watching Hindi movies must have noticed that the lead actors do not seem to do anything for their livelihood in Hindi movies. The hero in these movies is seen wooing the leading lady, first by singing a teasing song, then a romantic song. Then there would be a separation song, a misunderstanding song, a reconciliation song etc. Thinking about his/her love interest appears to be the full time job with Hindi movie lead actors which certainly cannot be one’s means of livelihood unless their names happen to be Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, who actually earned their livelihood by this method.

I have also realised that only lesser actors in Hindi movies seem to work for their livelihood.

I also realised that theere is one actor who was almost always shown working for a livelihood in his movies. And that is Mehmood. He would be shown pulling rickshaw in Chhoti Behan (1959), working as Kabaadiwala in Nelkamal, as a music teacher in “Padosan” , as a Butler in “Gumnaam”, as a Bus conductor in “”Bombay to Goa”etc. Often he appeared to be the only person with a job in the movie- take for instance Gumnaam and Padosan. 🙂

In the light of the above facts, it is clear that Mehmood, (unlike the lead actors of the movie) sent the right message to movie goers- that one needed to work for a livelihood and that no job was too small and too menial. What is more, I cannot recall Mehmood being shown as a beggar in any of his movies!

On a more serious note, we as music lovers need to be extremely thankful to Mehmood for the talents that he helped come up. It was he who gave R D Burman his first break as a music director with “Chhote Nawaab” (1961). R D Burman, despite this movie continued to remain out of work till Mehmood once again signed him up for “Bhoot Bangla” (1965). One year later “Teesri Manzil” (1966) happened and that launched the career of R D Burman. Memhmood had also supported Amitabh Bachchan during his difficult days by signing him up for “Bombay To Goa”.

Today (23 july 2013) is the ninth death anniversary of Mehmood (29 sep 1932- 23 july 2004). On this occasion, here is a song from “Preetam” (1971). Here too, Mehmood is shown working for his livelihood. He is a barber who finds himself in jail for some reason.

This light hearted song is sung by Manna Dey. Listening to the song, it is clear that the dance and music is inspired from “Gumnaam” (1965) and the lyrics are somewhat inspired from “Padosan” (1968). Based on the above, I guessed that the music director must be Shankar Jaikishan and the lyricist must be Rajinder Krishan. On checking up, I was proved right !

Here is this wonderful song from “”Preetam” (1971). This is a song that is a forgotten gem which many people may not have heard before. I myself had not heard this song before. What a fantastic song. We in this blog use such songs for special occasions. And this is very much a special occasion. We pay tribute to Mehmood through this song. Moreover, this song happens to be the 8400th song of the blog. Yes, the blog reaches yet another century with this song.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their continued support and encouragement which has ensured that this blog had continued to go on and on for over five years now. Hopefully this musical bandwagon will roll on and on for many more years and we will continue to savour countless other musical gems during that journey.

Atulji,
Congratulations on reaching another milestone! 🙂
A great tribute to Mehmood by recognizing his job qualifications in the movie. 🙂 Most of the time, he was employed “on screen”. Thanks for this never heard song of this great Mehmood-Manna Dey pair.

Atul ji – Congratulations !! and Congratulations to all …. !!!
Atul ji – thanks , thanks, and thanks for this wonderful song and a tribute to Mehmood who certainly has given us many many memories to cherish for. I like his special dancing (or jigs) style and his acting which have his special trademark and taking a dig at the ‘double standards’ and ‘hypocrisy’ prevailing in our society. His special ‘Hyderabadi’ in Kunwara Baap and other roles in all the movies was a part of.

But, now this song, for me it is a ”master’s’ master stroke’, yes Atul ji 🙂
i had the lyrics prepared of this song a few days back, when i get upon the songs from Rakhwaala, and this was lying in my draft folder and last week due the ‘non-updation’ of the ‘anti-virus’ in my system few days were lost and it was delayed. it seems that the ‘telepathy’ has worked on faster speed.
(But, now without further delay i am sharing the Lata song from this same movie immdtly.)
I remember to watch this movie on TV few years back but forgotten its story.
And thanks again !!

Thanks to Mehmood we are all over India speaking Christian and Hyderabadi Hindi.
I am shocked that people from the Hindi belt also began their sentence with “mereko lagta hain” instead of “mujhe lagta hain”. Listen to any Hindi interviews on any channel, you will know what I trying to drive at. It has become so much ingrained in our minds. We need to change this by pointing out upfront whenever we hear in person.

Atul ji,

So, softly hitting another quiet stroke and getting on to the next century.
Congratulations, to all readers and contributors. Ten thousand does not seem so daunting any more. Merrily moving ahead, this musical bandwagon is.

Cheers and best wishes, all around
