While posting a song of “Sati Savitri” (1964) I had remarked that there are certain value system (Sanskaar) that are difficult for westerners to comprehend. In the Indian value system, woman may be described as ardhaangini (better half) of her husband, but paradoxically, she is required to treat her husband as her God and a superior being, and she is required to regard herself an inferior being. Not very demcratic, but then these ancient scriptures were written in an entirely different era.

In my bid to clear the backlog of my old farmaishes, here is one song whose farmaish was given more than one year back. This song is from “Suhaagan” (1964). This song is a duet sung by Lata and Manna Dey. Madan Mohan is the music director. Madan Mohan teamed up with Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Rajinder Krishan in most of his movies and on the other hand he rarely worked with the leading names (Shailendra, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi and Hasrat Jaipuri). But in this movie, he worked with Hasrat Jaipuri. And what superb lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri came up with in this movie !

In this blog, I post songs that I categorise into different categories. Among them, there is one artificial category of songs (not yet formalised). These are songs that were very popular in its days during my formative years. I enjoyed these songs a lot without having any clues about their details. After that these songs would be forgotten with time. After a passage of three decades or more, I would stumble upon them one again. And this time, I would get to know these songs better. As far as I and several followers of this blog in my age group are concerned, these songs were immortal songs. As least they will remain so in our psyche.

When Bollywood movie music was in its early decades, it was carefully nursed and nurtured by some of the finest musical talents available. Most of the music dirrectors in the industry at that time had solid grooming in classical music. Though this song is from a movie of 1961, I first heard this song just a few days ago. And since then, I have come to the conclusion that this song must be one of the greatest songs created in Bollywood movies. And I am really surprised that this song is not all that well known. A song like this should form part of all the “all time classics” that music companies come up with periodically.
