Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Chunri sambhaal gori

Posted on: January 4, 2010

I have heard this song many a times and liked it. It is a light hearted joyous song sung by Manna Dey and Lata.

That is all I knew about this song. I had no idea about the movie, lyricist, music director or any other detail.

Hurray, now I know about the movie, lyricist and music director. The movie is “Bahaaron Ke Sapne” (1967) which was one of the earliest movies of Rajesh Khanna.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and R D Burman is the music director of this song. The song is a dance song where several people (including a very youn looking Rajesh Khanna) watch two persons singing and dancing. The lady lip syncing in Lata’s voice is Asha Parekh. The gentleman lip syncing in the voice of Manna Dey is a lesser actor (standard fate for most Manna Dey songs) who is familiar looking, but I am not aware of his name. So as usual I am relying upon my knowledgeable readers to bail me out my informing about his identity.
PS- The gentleman is Anwar Hussain. Thanks for the identification, Ravi.

And yes, this song is one of the memorable songs sung by Manna Dey.

Lyrics

chunri sambhaal gori,
udi chali jaaye re
hoy
chunri sambhaal gori,
udi chali jaaye re
maar na de dank kahin,
nazar koyi haay
chunri sambhaal gori,
udi chali jaaye re
maar na de dank kahin,
nazar koyi haay
dekh dekh
pag na phisal jaaye re
arararara
ha aa
chunri sambhaal
ha aa
udi chali jaaye
ha aa
maar na de dank ,
ha aa
nazar koyi haay

lailailaa lailailaa lailailaa
aaa
ruru ru ru hui
ruru ru ru

phislen nahin chal ke,
kabhi dukh ki dagar pe
thokar lage hans den,
ham basne waale,
dil ke nagar ke
haay haay
phislen nahin chal ke,
kabhi dukh ki dagar pe
thokar lage hans den,
ham basne waale,
dil ke nagar ke
are, har kadam bahak ke sambhal jaaye re
araa raaraa
ha aah
chunri sambhaal
ha aa
udi chali jaaye
ha aa
maar na de dank
ha aa
nazar koyi haay

ha aa aa aa
kirnen nahin apni,
to hai baahon ki maala
deepak nahin jin mein,
un galiyon mein hai hamse ujaala
haay haay
kirnen nahin apni,
to hai baahon ki maala
deepak nahin jin mein,
un galiyon mein hai hamse ujaala
are, bhool hi se chaandni khil jaaye re
araa raaraa raaraa
ha aah
chunri sambhaal
ha aa
udi chali jaaye
ha aa
maar na de dank
ha aa
nazar koyi haay
lalalala
o rasa rasa

ho rasa rasa
lailailaa lailailaa
pal chhin piyaa pal chhin,
ankhiyon kaa andheraa
rainaa nahin apni,
par apnaa hogaa kal kaa saweraa
haay
pal chhin piyaa pal chhin,
ankhiyon kaa andheraa
rainaa nahin apni,
par apnaa hogaa kal kaa saweraa
are,
rain kaun si jo na dhal jaaye re
araa raaraa raaraa
ha aah
chunri sambhaal
ha aa
udi chali jaaye
ha aa
maar na de dank
ha aa
nazar koyi haay

Loved all the songs in this film. The Rafi number “Zamane ne maara jawan kaise kaise” gives me goosebumps when I see the video of a despairing Kaka with Rafi’s voice in the background.

Memsaab had also done a lovely review of the film. Here it is:
