Today (13 november 2012) is Deewaali, the festival of light. This is the fifth Deewaali festival for this blog, which is quite an achievement for us, seeing that this blog has not just survived for such a long time, but has in fact progressed and thrived. Now it has become an online collaboration of likeminded music lovers who are contributing their mite and that is helping build up a valuable online musical repository.

Today (13 november 2012) is Deewaali, easily India’s biggest festival and a festival which also happens to be the time when Indians do their major shoppings of the year because this is supposed to be the most auspicious occasion for such activities. This festival in fact is celebrated as Laxmi Puja, Laxmi being the goddess of wealth and the consort of Vishnu, one of the three major Gods. Of course this festival is also celebrated as the day when Lord Ram (one of the reincarnations of Vishnu) returned back to Ayodhya with Sita and Laxman after completing his period of Vanwas.

Today (19 september 2012) is Ganesh Chaturthi, a major Indian festival. Today Lord Ganesh’s birthday is celebrated. In Indian calender, Lord Ganesh’s festival comes first and the festivals involving other Gods come then follow during the year. In fact, “Sriganesh karna” has become a Hindi language idiom which means “to begin”.

daraaren daraaren hain maathhe pe maula
marammat muqaddar ki kar do maula

These lines written by Prasoon joshi for this qawwali in the film Delhi – 6 have a fascination, that in indescribable. But still let me try.

Guess what song I stumbled upon a brief while ago ! I came across a rare song about Eid on the eve of the festival.

This song is as obscure as any. It is from a movie called “Rashida Dulhan” which was made sometime in late 1940s or early 1950s I guess but was never released. The songs of this movie, or at least this song managed to survive though.

Lovely greetings for a wonderful Eid celebration today, to one and all.

Today, we celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzaan. Today is the first day of the month of Shawwaal, the tenth month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. Ramzaan, which is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar, is observed as a fasting period by Muslims who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset. Fasting during Ramzaan, helps in developing self-control and is a way of getting closer to Allaah. It is historic record that the Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) in the last ten days of the month of Ramzaan. Today’s festivities mark the end of the fasting period.

Today (2 august 2012) is the festival of Raakhi. Like most Indian festivals, this date of the festival depends of the Indian Saka calender rather than on the Gregorian calender. As a result, this festival falls on different dates on different years for people familar with the Gregorian calender.

Greetings and best wishes to all readers for the festival of Raksha Bandhan today.

This song is from the 1985 film ‘Ghar Dwaar’. The film is produced by Mohan ji Prasad and SK Jain, and is directed by Kalptaru. The star cast of this film is impressive and includes Shriram Lagoo, Tanuja, Sachin, Raj Kiran, Shoma Anand, Kadar Khan, Ashok Saraf, Ashalata etc. The music for this film is composed by Chitragupt. Checking through the available articles on Chitragupt ji, he passed away in 1991. This film could well be one of the last films that he composed for. I am unable to locate the name of the lyricist, and would request other knowledgeable readers to please add this information.

I am familiar with the Hindi film ‘Sikandar-e-Azam’ (1965) which I had watched on Doordarshan long ago. How can I forget the iconic song “jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiyan karti hai basera” which used to be played on our Independent Day and the Republic Day. A few months back, I came to know that there was another film ‘Sikandar’ with the same story line which was released in 1941. The film was produced under the banner of Minerva Movietone owned by Sohrab Modi and directed by him. The star cast included Prithviraj Kapoor ( Sikandar), Sohrab Modi ( King Porus), Vanmala (Ruksana), Sheela, Meena Shorey ( Prarthhna, Kign Ambi’s sister), K N Singh ( King Ambi of Taxila) etc.

Technically Ramnavmi is over in India, since it is already midnight in India and as such it is a new day. But here is a Ramnavmi song that was quite popular in 1970s and I in fact wonder how I missed out on remembering this song. Peevesie’s mom too remembered it, albeit late and sent this song just minutes before the Ramnavmi day was over.
