Munshi Premchand (31 July 1880- 8 october 1936) was a premier Hindi novelist whose novels and stories have had an enormous influence on modern Hindi literature. When I look at his literary output, I am amazed at his vision. His vision was unbelievably progressive and futuristic, especially considering the era he lived in (late 19th century to early 20th century).

The music is an uplifting exuberant melody – composed by SD Burman. In the earlier days of Hindi movie music, the songs were based on classical songs alone. With time, folk music based songs became to be composed and that led to a surge in the popularity of Hindi movie music.

“Pehle Aap” (1944) was one of those early movies which decided the course of action that future Hindi movie music was to take. This movie, like other movies where Naushad was the music director, had its music based on folk music, and that enabled public to readily connect and identify with this music.

Mat bolo bahaar ki batiyaan re

While looking up information about Naushad, I found out that he made his debut as a music director in 1940 in a movie called “Prem Nagar”. In this movie he composed as many as 13 songs. Those are the days when actors themselves used to sing their own songs.
