Hindi film music is like an ocean. As many rivers merge into the ocean at various stages, regional music from various parts of India is assimilated in HFM(Hindi Film Music). Initially it was the Marathi stage/natya sangeet and Parsee theatre which influenced HFM. In the East, it was Rabindra sangeet and Nazrul Geete thate made the basis of film songs. In the Lahore centre it was the Punjabi style after Khazanchi-1941.

Today (23 september) is the death anniversary of Rajinder Krishan, an underestimated lyricist but who in reality dominated lyrics writing during the golden era of Hindi movie music. Among all the lyricists figuring in this blog, Rajinder Krishan has the second highest number of songs (554), behind Majrooh Sultanpuri (582).

This is the story of a 16 year old boy born in Peshawar in a conservative Pathan family for whom the association with film industry was a strict taboo. The boy was attracted to Bombay (Mumbai) as a destination. While listening to some Hindi film songs in one of the shops in Peshawar, a few of his friends coaxed him to try his luck as an actor in Hindi film industry since he had a good face. The fascination for Bombay coupled with the remarks from his friends were sufficient motivational factors for this youngboy to leave ( rather run away from) Peshawar for Bombay some time in 1935. The young boy was Ghulam Mustafa Durrani (1919-1988), later known in the Hindi film industry as G M Durrani, the playback singer.

When we discuss old songs of 1930s and 1940s, we tend to believe that those songs were all serious songs. That is not really the case. In all generations of music one can find light hearted songs as well.

Ek yaad kisi ki yaad rahi

“Shamaa” (1946) is a movie about which very little information is available and digging up information about this movie is a time consuming process. And irritatingly, the little information that turns up is incorrect as well. So I decided to dig up my own comments from the two earlier songs of this movie that I had discussed in the past. From those comments, I see that this movie has Mehtab and Rehana in this movie.
