Madness manifests itself in many forms. And not just differently in different people but also differently at different times in the same person. Long before I got to learn of the term OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), I can claim to have exhibited signs that would make an OCD affected person proud.

On the morning of the 14th of August 2011, a Sunday, when I casually checked Facebook, I expected to see the usual stuff. Typical (sometimes philosophical or witty) status messages or photos posted of a friend’s holiday trip.

Atul has just brought to my notice that Kishore Kumar’s birthday falls on 4th August. He wanted me to write up a song on this occasion – how could I possibly refuse? For one, it is for Atul’s blog and therefore an honour to be part of it in any possible way. Secondly, it is for Kishore da – and he’s always been close to my heart too. Today, 31st July, is Rafi saab’s death anniversary. It is a date that evokes emotions in many Rafi saab fans even thirty years after his death. Many of them, especially if they are in their 50s or more, will remember the 31st of July 1980 as one of those “where were you on that day?” events, associated in the past with JFK’s assassination in 1963 and the successful moon-landing in 1969, and more recently with 9/11 or India’s own 26/11.

Even as I type out this write-up, my fingers are trembling. And I am not exaggerating! I have written over 50 write-ups for this blog so far and yet I find myself struggling to put down my thoughts coherently for this particular piece. It is not as if I have writer’s block (which I may also well have) ; it is just that the occasion seems to have got the better of me. I find myself totally inadequate to the occasion, and although I’ve just started, I have this nasty foreboding that I am going to make a mess of this, I am going to end up “choking”. I am suddenly beginning to empathise and sympathise with the South African cricket team. 😀

There are some songs that are close to my heart because of some association I have with them from my schooldays. Whenever I listen to them even today, memories of those days get triggered.

Up until about a year ago, I knew just one song of the movie “Ustadon Ke Ustad” (1963). This was the famous Rafi saab song “sau baar janam lenge”.
