A ‘raagini’ coming alive – that would be an experience worth paying for with everything in life, including life itself. Imagine the circumstance – a private ‘sangeet sabha’ – musical congregation. The singer singing at the request of and in the honor of his spiritual guru. He renders Raag Jaunpuri, with such intense affection – and after some time a moment comes to pass where the entire gathering is transported into a magical surrealism, and the people present actually envision a very beautiful lady bedecked in fine jewellery and attire, slowly ambling amongst them. It is not an individual experience, but a vision perceived by many who were present. A worried guru motions the singer to slow down, and fade away the singing. But the vision persists. Eventually, the guru directs the singer to render Raag Bhairavi, and slowly the apparition fades away.

Words that are pretentious and pre-sentimental. A song from the 1961 film ‘Zabak’, performed on screen by Shyama and Mahipal; a song that has become a perennial favorite across generations. And its heroine, flying at the heights of popularity at that time. Little was she aware that it was just about the peak she would be at, and then, the old order would change and the new players will come on.

A truck driver’s song, rendered by Mukesh. The film – ‘Pyaase Dil’ from 1974. Nothing remarkable to remember about this film. A new venture from the banner of New Ashoka International, Bombay. The film is directed by Charandas ‘Shokh’ and the partial credits for acting include Yash Tandon, Aziz Mirza, Alka, Benjamin Gilani.

Some days back, I had posted the first song from the film ‘Dark Street’ (1961), first on this blog that is. The song is ‘Itne Badey Jahaan Mein, Apna Bhi Koi Hota’ . It was a farmaish from Prakash ji that was pending for some time. In that write up, I had written that the film has some more wonderful songs, and had promised I would be posting more songs from this film. So here is the next song from this film. This is a gem of a duet rendered by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. The lyrics for this film are penned by Indeevar and Gulshan Baawra. The YouTube post identifies the lyricist as Gulshan Baawra.

A refrain that is now a well known by line by which one can recognize that a particular bhajan is by Kabeer. A name that is now a household word wherever Hindi is spoken and understood. And a poet whose verses and dohas (couplets) have found their way into the everyday spoken Hindi, as proverbs and adages. Yesterday, the Jayeshtha Poornima, was the birth anniversary of this great poet saint of India.

Mention of the name Uma Devi, almost invariably brings to mind the peerless melody – ‘Afsaana Likh Rahin Hoon Dil e Beqaraar Ka’ from the film Dard (1947). And then, in the current memory, there is very little else that emerges from depth of yesteryears. But the fact is that Uma Devi (later also known as the comedienne Tun Tun) was fairly active as a playback singer in the 40s and early 50s. And there is a fairly good number of memorable songs that she has rendered during her short career as a playback singer.

The history of Rajasthan is a legendary saga of warriors and warfare over the centuries. The annals of Rajput clans date back to pre-Christ era, and the origins of the various dynasties are linked back into pre-history to the lineage of Lord Ram of the Suryavansh (Sun Dynasty). As per the chronicles of the Rajput dynasties, they trace their origins to Luv, the son of Lord Ram. Their flag, which is supposedly the flag of Prince Luv, is the insignia of Sun on a crimson background, still flutters on the forts and palaces in Rajasthan.

This article is the 6000th song post in the blog. This article is the 1000th song for for Asha Bhonsle as a playback singer.
The year – 1997. For the first time ever (October ’97), an Indian artist is being honored as the ‘Artist of the Month’ by MTV channel on cable TV. At the age of 64, a Maharashtrian housewife who loves to cook, and is a grandmother, Asha Bhosle graced the honors. And mind you, this recognition is voted for by the MTV audience, a population that primarily consists of teen agers. At an age when most people in many walks of life are either retired or contemplating a more relaxed and sedate life, this diva of Hindi film music, went on to completely reinvent herself. At the age of 64, with a new makeover, she rose once again to become the queen of funky pop.
