The pen whose first creations mesmerized everyone with the magic of “Mera Sunder Sapna Beet Gayaa” and “Yaad Karoge Yaad Karoge Ik Din Humko Yaad Karoge”. A dream debut that most artists just think about. He was introduced to Shashadhar Mukherjee, then still with Filmistan, and got the assignment to write for the 1947 film ‘Do Bhai’. Sachin Da took the words and wove a musical magic around them, and gave them to the voice of Geeta Rai (later Geeta Dutt). It need not even be mentioned that the rest is history.

Aisi kuchh baat hai ki, at the mention of Meena Kumari’s name, come to mind these lines written by DN Madhok (‘Namaste’, 1943). Born as Maahjabeen Bano in 1932, on screen in 1939, leading lady by 1950, won the first ever Filmfare award in 1952 (‘Baiju Baawra’), established tragedienne in 1953 (‘Daaera’), married to Kamaal Amarohi in 1952, separated from him in 1960, divorced in 1964, reunited in 1968, and then gone from this world in 1972. Just 40 years on this earth, and a career of thirty three years, ninety films, four Filmfare awards as best actress, and memorable string of powerful roles that made her a legend at an age and time in life when most of us are still finding our feet.

It occurs to me today that. . we are today reaching that point in time when this world has been bereft of Rafi Sb’s physical presence now, for almost that duration of time that this world was blessed and more complete with his presence as a singer known to the listeners. For an active career that lasted about three and a half decades, it is now about the same amount of time that he has not been with us. And his legacy grows stronger.
Remembering Rafi Sb on the anniversary of his passing away today (31st July).

A voice that knew no boundaries, knows no boundaries. A voice that spans the entire spectrum of octave range that the music directors dream of. A voice that displays limitless possibilities of emotions and colors. A voice that is alive and true to the very essence of the on screen scenario every moment. A voice such as his can only be explained in terms of a Divine intervention. The voice that is the voice of every performer he sang for. The voice that is Mohammed Rafi – matchless and inimitable.
Remembering Rafi Sb on the anniversary of his passing away today -31st July.

Id Mubaarak, to all dear friends and visitors.
The trials and penance of the fasting month, Ramzan come to an end and it is the day to celebrate with happiness. A day of joy, to celebrate with family, and friends. It is a day to greet even the strangers that one meets. A day of fresh new attire, a day of favorite savories, a day of family get togethers, leisure time with friends, shopping ventures, exchange of gifts, and yes, ‘idee’ for the children. (‘Idee’ is the gift that the children received from elders today, when they meet them and pay their respects. It is a token, presented in cash or kind.)

And why not? Having ‘chaat pakodi’ and ‘bhel puri’ occasionally is a good break from the routine meals at home, day in and day out. And so it is with the ‘jhagda’. Isn’t that a matter of common everyday experience? A lot of love, spiced with the pepper of arguments and squabbles; add to the value of high spirits and breaks the monotony of goody goody goodness. Adds to the tang in life.

Since even before the films started to talk and sing, music has been an important part of the cinematic experience. Even in the days of silent films, there used to be a live orchestra sitting close to the screen, who would provide music accompaniment and some sound effects to make the proceedings more interesting and to keep engaged the attention of the viewers. Of course, when the sound came, and the music and song became such an inseparable part of the theme, the presentation and the making of the films that with it came a new distinction and a new significance that got attached to the role and position of a music director. But the story of the music and song in the films does not end there.

And so wrote the scribe
