I was in school when the songs of this film hit the radio waves. The film apparently made almost no impact, for I did not register its name or other details ever. And it was only after joining Song-a-Day team, that I came to know about the details of this film, even its name. A while back I had posted one song from this film – “Ye Dil Nasheen Nazaare Karte Hain Kya Ishaare”, and that was when I searched for and found the details of this film. And it was then that I realized that three of the new favorites (referring to the time I was in school) are all from the same film ‘Pyaase Dil’ (1974). (Ah yes, Prakash ji, after reading your comment, I thought more wait is not good to get this third song in 🙂 ).

The Voice of Mukesh #28

And so wrote the scribe – “Yaadon Ka Sahaara Na Hota, Hum Chhod Ke Duniya Chal Dete” .

Thirty seven years to date. The life and the world has moved on, as it always does. It is the everyday drudgery and the process of existence, that makes life continue with what it is. But it is the memories of the sounds of dear ones that make life beautiful, and livable. Memories, that are frozen in time, for they are past and will never be alive and here again today. And yet, these memories live, in the minds, in remembrances, and in the sounds captured in technology. Ah yes, it is these sounds that make is possible to exist, with the drudgery of everyday existence.

The Voice of Mukesh #27

O what a gem this song is. I tracked this song as part of this series, and heard it for the first time recently. Probably the most beautiful song with the theme of ‘Mere Sapnon Ki Raani’. There is the iconic ‘Mere Sapnon Ki
Raani, Roohi Roohi Roohi’
song from the film ‘Shahjehaan’ (1946), sung by Saigal Sb. After 39 years came another song that took the country by storm –“Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu”(‘Aradhana’, 1969). In between and thereafter, there are a few other songs with this theme, none so notable as these. And then we have this song in 1948, a rendering by Mukesh, in my opinion, which is simply the best of the lot.

Careers in the film industry span a spectrum that goes from one act wonders, to artists that spend a lifetime in the films, with active careers spanning four, five or six, or even seven decades. At the low end of this spectrum is a class of artists that flattered and zoomed like a shooting star, but then disappeared. Or if not disappeared, they stayed on in the industry without making any other significant impact or having their presence felt.

Greetings to all as we celebrate today the 66th anniversary of independence of this nation. Over the years, we have enjoyed many songs, published on this blog and many not yet showcased here. Songs that celebrate the spirit of patriotism and nationalism, songs that celebrate the event of freedom for this nation on this day. The flavors and the moods of these songs vary a lot. From serious songs of nationalism, from songs that talk of struggles and martyrdom, from songs that exhort their audience to rise and protect, to the songs that celebrate the honor of this land and its people, to the songs that express joy of freedom, and songs that inspire hard work and nation building. So many poets have written such a variety of verses. Every Independene Day and Republic Day we post 6 to 8 songs, and yet there seems to be a treasure of such songs that is out there, still to be discovered.

Two years, really. Life is so incessant, and so mindless in its pursuit of time. Riding on this train of time, it does not allow any halt or a breather. You are on it, and then one day you are not on it. That’s just it, the train continues to roll. The journey is dotted with countless interchanges, and so many wonderful people that we have known, have left this train, to take on a different journey. We know, we will never see them again. Although the past is always behind us and we can never ever get there. Still it continues to live in our minds. People will leave, never to return. But the memories – they are forever.
