Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Tum mehakti jawaan chaandni ho

Posted on: August 29, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor of this blog.

I was in school when the songs of this film hit the radio waves. The film apparently made almost no impact, for I did not register its name or other details ever. And it was only after joining Song-a-Day team, that I came to know about the details of this film, even its name. A while back I had posted one song from this film – “Ye Dil Nasheen Nazaare Karte Hain Kya Ishaare”, and that was when I searched for and found the details of this film. And it was then that I realized that three of the new favorites (referring to the time I was in school) are all from the same film ‘Pyaase Dil’ (1974). (Ah yes, Prakash ji, after reading your comment, I thought more wait is not good to get this third song in 🙂 ).

Many months after the above mentioned song was posted, Prakash ji sent in another song of this film, which is recently posted – “Jhukti Ghataa Hum Se Kahe”). Both these songs are fabulous, the first is a solo by Mukesh and the second is a duet by Mahendra Kapoor and Jagjit Kaur. These two, and the third one in today’s post, completely belie the quality of the film itself. The film may have been nothing, but its songs are lovely pieces of poetry and melody strung together. The words are from the pen of Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and the music, well who else but Khayyaam. And when we add to this heady mix, the sonorous voice of Mukesh, the result is magic, simply magic.

This song, another lovely solo from this film, is rendered with such magnificence by this master of the voice of magic. As I was listening to this song again today, the emotion that made itself perceived in my mind ran up an apparent contradiction. Can you ever imagine a relaxed enthusiasm; real, genuine relaxed enthusiasm? It does sound like a contradiction in terms. But that is the wonderful flavor that the voice of Mukesh is able to precipitate in this song. Listen to this wonderful rendering and it will give you a feeling of geared up enthusiasm, which seems to be very relaxed and very relaxing. It is a charm that is possible only when the singing voice is that of Mukesh.

Regarding the on screen performance. After having checked out the comments on the two earlier songs of this film, I can for sure say that the lady in pink, with a fancy hairdo, is Alka. The gentleman on the keys is Aziz Mirza, that is, if the identification of the on screen performer in the duet song is correct. There is another actress in this video clip, a lady in white who is looking so very, very familiar, but I am not able to decide on the name. My mind wants to say it is Bela Bose, but I am not certain. I request other readers and friends to please confirm or correct my statement.

But regardless, listen to and enjoy is remarkable song by Mukesh. The sound appears to be arising out of great depths. What a captivating melody, what charming verses, what an iconic gem of a song this one is. A ballad in the honor of the beauty of the beloved, an ode that leaves no epithets unused
when it says

jo bhi sochoon tumhen tum wohi ho

A song that I am sure Romeo would have loved to serenade Juliet with. Magical, enchanting.

tum mehakti jawaan chaandni ho, chalti phirti koi roshni ho
rang bhi roop bhi raagini bhi, job hi sochun tumhen tum wohi ho

Your being
Is the freshly fragrant beams of moonlight
You are the glimmering radiance that moves at will
Any color I think of
Any image I could conceive
Any melody I could create
You are all these and more
Anything that I can think of
You are

jab kabhi tumne nazren uthhaayin, aankh taaron ki jhukne lagi hai

When your eyelids rise up
The stars in the heaven lower their gaze
And when
With a smile
You lower your eyes
The blossoming flowers
They feel the end of their life
Ah, my dear
You are the first smile of every spring

jab bhi tum pe nigaahen padi hain, dil mein ik pyaas lehraa gayi hai
tum to sachmuch chhalakti nadi ho

The fragrance
Seeping from your soft raiment
Pervades every dream of mine
Whenever my gaze falls upon you
I feel the flourish of a longing in my heart
You are the swirling waters of an exuberant river

jab se dekha hai chaaha hai tumko, ye fasaana chalaa hai yahin se
kab talak dil bhataktaa rahega, maang loon aaj tumko tumhi se
tum to khud pyaar ho zindagi ho

This saga of my love
Started since I first saw you
And felt a fondness for you
Ah, this truant, lost heart of mine
Till when will keep searching
My wish, today is
To request you
From yourself
You are life
And you are the essence
Of that which is called love

Lady in white is Shyama.
About Aziz Mirza- who later, became very famous Film director, had started his film career as ‘Rajneesh’ opposite Kanan Kaushal in Vasant Joglekar’s ‘Prarthana’ in late 60s. He had acted in ‘Adhikar’ too. But then he turned towards film direction; that was a gain for Hindi film industry!
